"Making Obama a one term president."
That's the line loudly announced every week day marking the start of Sean Hannity's daily propaganda-radio program.
Senate Minority Leader, Droopy Dawg McConnell detailed his top priority last November....“the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president."
McConnell is as slippery as a greased pig and Hannity is hopelessly addicted to lying.....but both guys are well aware of this....
What even McConnell and Hannity know, though both men will lie or dissemble if asked about it, is that during Barack Obama's presidency more private sector jobs have been created than during the entire 8 year presidency of Obama's predecessor.
Don't misunderstand. Our employment situation is still dire. The official 9% unemployment number obscures the twice-as-high percentage if people who have fallen off the unemployment rolls were included in the charting. We have a long way to go.
But, it is true that our employment situation is not as bad as it was when George W. Bush left office. If the majority of economists are correct in their predictions for 2011-12....granted, a big if.....and the creek don't rise....our jobs situation should continue to improve as we move closer to the November, 2012 general election.
The problem for movement conservatives is that those two ground conditions are incongruent. Hannity and McConnell's top priority is to stop Obama from being re-elected....yet, if our nation's jobs situation improves as predicted.....defeating Obama will be virtually impossible to do.....and especially so when the potential GOP presidential candidates are factored in.
In the U.S House, Republicans have proposed cutting government spending from now until October to the tune of $61 billion. Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics has evaluated the GOP proposal and determined that the cuts will result in the loss of 700,000 jobs.
Indiana's Republican Governor, Mitch Daniels, when asked by NPR's Steve Inskeep...."Are budget cuts — government budget cuts — worth it, even if they end up seriously costing a lot of jobs right now?".....responded...
"The answer is yes."
Ohio's own John Boehner in an Oscar-winning, I-wish-I-hadn't-said-that moment told reporters recently if jobs were lost because of cutting spending....."So be it."
Add in the gleeful anticipation by Governor Scott Walker over the prospect of laying off 5000 Wisconsin state employees in yet another GOP hostage taking crisis......and I don't think one has to be Einstein to figure out that Republicans are plotting purposely to undermine our economy even more as part of a larger plan to limit Obama to one term as president.
Many will scoff at such a notion. Why, Republicans would never, never, never....on purpose....strategize to eliminate American jobs in the hopes of winning back the presidency. Never. Republicans would never plot to harm the nation just for political gain....would they?
Mournfully, the answer is yes.
Consider: In 2011 Americans are enjoying the lowest state, local and federal income tax rates in 60 years. At the same time, America also has the largest national debt and the largest budget deficit in history. As the Republican narrative is being spun today, reducing deficits and debt is Job One on our way back to full employment and fiscal sanity...AND YET....just 60 days ago these same Republicans brought hostage-taking pressure on Obama and the Democrats to ADD $4 trillion more to the national debt by borrowing the entire amount needed to extend tax cuts.
Now, ask yourself....is that what a political movement would do if they were oh-so-serious about reducing debt and deficits? Of course not.
The extend-the-tax-cuts hostage situation of December should have forever put an end to phony assertions that Republicans are proposing whateverthehell they are proposing to correct our debt and deficit situation. They're not. Republicans do not care about the national debt or record deficits......what they care about is using the national debt and record deficits as issues from which political power can be gained.
As Scott...."we're here for political reasons"....Walker has made clear, as "so be it" Boehner has explained, as Mitch "the answer is yes" Daniels has triumphantly announced, as "number one priority" Droopy Dawg defiantly declared.....today's Republicans do not care one whit about debt, deficits, or creating jobs. What they care about is political power.
Republicans don't care about the deficit and the debt or they would have never extended the tax cuts. Yet, Republicans point to the deficit and the debt, which they made worse, and deride Obama's fiscal leadership. Republicans don't care if more workers lose their jobs during times of high unemployment or they wouldn't be proposing such deep spending cuts right now. Yet, Republicans will point to the higher unemployment numbers and slower economic conditions that they have created.....and blame Obama for them.
Once again.....today's Republicans, not to be confused with the more sensible Republicans of the Reagan era.....will do ANYTHING to gain political power.
We deserve better.
