"Information Warfare"

By The Reverend Published: July 24, 2014

Israeli scoreboard: 718 dead Palestinians, 32 dead Israeli soldiers.

Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday: "They want to pile up as many civilian dead as they can. They use telegenically dead Palestinians for their cause. They want the more dead, the better."

Back in 2009, the last time Israel created a huge pile of "telegenically dead Palestinians", the final scoreboard count was 1434 dead (telegenically so) Palestinians, 960 of whom were civilians.

Leaders in the U.S. have "serious concerns" ....but not serious concerns about the number of Palestinian dead bodies, instead, serious concerns about Israel's image....

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told CNN Tuesday that Israel appears to be “over doing it,” and is hurting its “moral authority.”

What "moral authority?" Seriously.....what f**king moral authority?

Elsewhere in Judeo-Christian values.....

Virtually all U.S. media outlets have rested their case on the shooting down of the Malaysian airliner. The Russians either did it themselves, or are indirectly responsible by arming the pro-Russian, eastern Ukrainians with BUK missile systems and the training to use them. Akron Beacon Journal editors joined the "blame Putin" ranks this morning.

But...Senior U.S. intelligence officials said Tuesday that Russia was responsible for "creating the conditions" that led to the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, but they offered no evidence of direct Russian government involvement.

The intelligence officials were cautious in their assessment, noting that while the Russians have been arming separatists in eastern Ukraine, the U.S. had no direct evidence that the missile used to shoot down the passenger jet came from Russia.

"no direct evidence"....of Russian involvement. But  plenty of evidence of direct U.S. involvement in Ukrainian "regime change"....the reality which actually "created the conditions" that led to the downing of the commercial airliner.

Veteran reporter Robert Parry.....After last Thursday’s shoot-down, I was told that U.S. intelligence analysts were examining satellite imagery that showed the crew manning the suspected missile battery wearing what looked like Ukrainian army uniforms, but my source said the analysts were still struggling with whether that essentially destroyed the U.S. government’s case blaming the rebels.

The Los Angeles Times article on Tuesday’s briefing seemed to address the same information this way: “U.S. intelligence agencies have so far been unable to determine the nationalities or identities of the crew that launched the missile. U.S. officials said it was possible the SA-11 [anti-aircraft missile] was launched by a defector from the Ukrainian military who was trained to use similar missile systems.”

As with the run-up to Iraq, American leaders must make the intelligence fit the pre-determined policy.....and so, those Ukrainian military-uniform wearers in those satellite images, the Ukrainian military-uniform wearers that fired the BUK missile....just HAD to be "defectors." U.S. leaders have already concluded that the Russians did the deed....and now the evidence must be made to fit the Russians-did-it policy.

Because perish the thought that Ukrainian military members shot down the Malaysian airliner. If that were, you know, true....then the entire U.S. narrative about what's gone on, and what's still going on, in Ukraine would crumble into WMD in Iraq.

Parry again....what the Obama administration and most of the mainstream U.S. news media have delivered so far is another example of “information warfare,” assembling a case to make an adversary look bad regardless of the actual evidence — and then marginalizing any dissents to the desired conclusion.

Parry is talking about the Ukrainian crisis, specifically, but the same "information warfare" is at play in the Palestinian crisis as well. Although it is true that U.S. corporate-media coverage of what Bibi calls the "telegenically dead" has been more balanced than it was in 2009....the narrative remains the same.....Hamas shoots off crude rockets into Israeli territory, Israel has a right to defend itself. That's the narrative. Very little about proportionality. Very little description of the sophisticated U.S.-taxpayer-sponsored killing machines Israel is using against Palestinian civilians. Very little about the squalid, fenced-in conditions Palestinians are subjected to every single day inside the Israeli Occupied Territories. Very little about all those divinely-inspired "settlement" expansions by Zionist Jews. But a lot about how the evil Hamas uses civilians as "human shields"....a lot about that.

What I wonder about is this.....If it is true that both Israel and the U.S. are such exceptional democracies, democracies where freedom and righteousness shine like brightly-lit cities on metaphorical hills....beacons guiding other lesser nations into the sunshine of exceptionalism.....why all the propaganda? Why all the "information warfare?"

Is it because the unvarnished truth in these matters is just too difficult for commoners of free, transparent and exceptional democracies to understand......or is it because Israeli and U.S. leaders are afraid of how the commoners might react if they knew the truth?
