GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney raised a couple million dollars in Las Vegas last night at a fundraiser hosted by Donald Trump. Trump has been actively pushing the buttons of race-challenged and zombified conservative voters for over a year now using Birtherism as his main attention-getting device. Trump, as many already know, once led GOP presidential candidate polls. Donald Trump....no joke....was seen by potential conservative voters as the leading candidate to replace Barack Obama.
Trump loudmouthed his way in front of media stenographers last spring just long enough to see his teevee show renewed for another season. Conservative voter desperadoes at the time loved the twice, or thrice, bankrupted Trump, touting him as an Experienced and Serious Business Person who could "fix'" our economy.
But what the more hateful conservatives really liked about Trump is what those same voters liked, at least temporarily, about Newt Gingrich. Trump and Gingrich fed conservative voters red, though rotted and worm infested, winger-meat. Trump gave conservative haters-of-Obama what they wanted to hear.....Obama is not one of us, not a "real" American. Obama is a Usurper, born in Kenya. Obama is an impostor, not a U.S. citizen. Obama is the "other" whom all Americans should run away from.
Before Donald Trump entered the presidential campaign gossip-a-thon last year, he was a repulsive character, more cartoonish than anything else. A super-narcississtic, personalized symbol of all that is wrong with American excess.
Last night the GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, was dismissive of any questions regarding potential guilt-by-association birther scarring of his campaign by cheerfully appearing with the guy arch-conservative George Will called a "bloviating ignoramus." When asked about the birds-of-a-feather-flocking-together thing, Romney......well....let's say Romney was no John McCain...
“I don’t agree with all the people who support me, and my guess is they don’t all agree with everything I believe in,” Romney told reporters.
That is good enough for our conservative, tax-cut lusting establishment.. Of course, in 2008, that wasn't good enough for Barack Obama....he was forced by Village pearl clutchers to repudiate his relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Romney needs the money Trump can raise......and what Romney is proving by sitting at the feet of one of our nation's biggest human embarrassments....is that he will do anything to become president. In the end, Romney is a man who has very little political integrity.
To me, this is not anything new. Romney stood in one of the GOP primary debates confronted with a question about whether he had undocumented workers doing his landscaping on one of his many Mansions. Romney's response was illuminating....
"So we went to the company, and we said, 'Look, you can't have any illegals working on our property. I'm running for office, for Pete's sake! I can't have illegals!' "
The implication was transparent. If Romney was not running for president, then, "illegals working on our property" would be no big deal. But a perception by voters, according to Romney, that the former governor running for president had "illegals" doing his menial labor, would hurt his chances to become the GOP candidate for the presidency.
Why was that, exactly? Conservative, red-winger-meat eating voters would like to see the millions of undocumented immigrants of Hispanic origin sent back to their birth countries....all of them....and Romney knew that he couldn't be seen as consorting with the undocumented enemy, as it were, and still run successfully for president. 'For Pete's sake....conservatives voters won't vote for me if they think I'm soft or two-faced on 'illegals'....I can't have any 'illegals' working at my houses and expect to be the conservative candidate for president.'
But, for Pete's sake.....Romney has no concern over being smeared-by-association with Donald Trump. Mitt isn't concerned that Trump's over-the-top, wall-to-wall, horsesh*t-spouting over Obama's citizenship will.....well....rub off on him in any negative way.
Why would that be, exactly? Because many, many conservative voters agree with Trump's birtherism. Make no mistake, conservatives and Republicans will tell you, feigning seriousness, that Obama's birthplace is not an issue any longer.....but what they will not do is state publicly that those who still tout Birtherism should drop the issue.
John McCain demonstrated integrity in 2008 when he corrected a confused winger-woman calling Obama an "Arab". "No", McCain said, "Obama is a decent person and a person you don't have to be scared of as president ."
4 years later, GOP candidate Romney buddies up to Donald Trump, enthusiastically accepts Trump's endorsement....and remains entirely silent about the birtherism lunacy which Trump still espouses every chance he gets.
One of those two GOP presidential candidates exhibited personal and national integrity, one of those candidates did not.
