When Barack Obama negotiated his Grand Compromise with
Two months after a midterm election construed to be all about the oh-so-terrible federal deficits and debt....Obama and his new Bipartisan Buddies added another trillion to the red ink mess, while congratulating each other on how well they worked together to get something accomplished for the American people. The word, nauseating, doesn't quite capture the essence of the moment.
That said, the Libyan-American Kabuki theater I've witnessed over the past week or so takes nauseating to an all new sickening level.
Here at home, Republican
In Tea Party intoxicated states,
Well, LittleJohn....Barack knows what to do with it. Lead an attack on yet another oil-rich nation....for humanitarian reasons, naturally. Deficits, smecifits.....
Mindful of the risks and costs of military action, we are naturally reluctant to use force to solve the world’s many challenges. But when our interests and values are at stake, we have a responsibility to act. That is what happened in Libya over the course of these last six weeks.
The real "interests and values" of the U.S. are better seen in the hush-hush, behind the scenes deal making going on all this month by 6 Bipartisan
Not a lot of "natural reluctance" to take even more from those coddled, spoiled workers....you know, those who simply suck off the government teat of Alan Simpson's guttersnipe dreams.
Speaking of values...and interests.....here's
For more than four decades, the Libyan people have been ruled by a tyrant – Moammar Gaddafi. He has denied his people freedom, exploited their wealth, murdered opponents at home and abroad, and terrorized innocent people around the world – including Americans who were killed by Libyan agents.
Gaddafi declared that he would show “no mercy” to his own people. He compared them to rats, and threatened to go door to door to inflict punishment. In the past, we had seen him hang civilians in the streets, and kill over a thousand people in a single day. Now, we saw regime forces on the outskirts of the city.
Hey, the crazy guy said he wouldn't show his own people any "mercy" and called them "rats".....and this stuff has been going on for "four decades".....and, and, and.....
In 2006 Bush removed Libya from the official list of state sponsors of terrorism. In September 2008 Condoleezza Rice traveled to Libya to have talks with Gadhafi. And just a few days before the 2008 presidential election, Bush signed a settlement under which Libya compensated families of victims of Lockerbie and other 80s-era attacks.
A delegation of US senators led by John McCain met with Libya's leader yesterday to discuss the possible delivery of nonlethal defense equipment. The visit and Washington's offer of military equipment was another sign of the improving ties between the former longtime adversaries.
Hope your neck didn't snap from whiplash while reading all those American "interests and values" on display in Libya. Kind of dizzying.
My take. What's happening in Libya is the result of multiple tails wagging multiple political dogs. England's David Cameron and France's Sarkozy are under a lot of political pressure from their homeys....and Barack Obama is trying to attract moderates from a group of Republican voters who, by 51%, think he should be picked up and detained by ICE agents as an undocumented.
What better way to show how Serious you are, how patriotically American you are, than to drop deficit-increasing Freedom Bombs on another foreign country?
And I just bet that a dozen years from now, when Exxon and BP have fully exploited America's 25% stake in Libya's newly discovered oil reserves....the cost of all those Bombs of Freedom will just seem like a drop in the bucket. Some political pipsqueak may even say something akin to...."I don't even know what we will do with all that money."
Me either. But one thing I will guaran-goddamn-tee ya'......whatever the outcome.....it will be a very good reason to reduce taxes on the top 2%.
