IRS FauxScandal A National Embarrassment

By The Reverend Published: June 1, 2013

If you type the words "IRS targeted conservatives" into the Google search get 87 million results. Eighty-seven million.

In the same way that Shirley Sherrod was not approaching her job at Agriculture as an open racist even though L'il Jim O'Keefe purposely edited a video to make it look so ....... the IRS did NOT "target conservatives."

I've already made the necessary points to disprove the notion that the IRS "targeted conservative groups" here. Two other must-reads on this topic are found here and here.

1)Over 80 percent of applications submitted for tax-exempt status were from conservative organizations.

2)The only organization to have its tax-exempt status revoked was one run by Democratic women to try and encourage more women to run for office.

3)There is no requirement that any 501(c)(4) organization apply for approval of their tax-exempt status. If they do not apply, there is a risk of audit and disqualification down the road, but they are not required to apply to be a 501(c)(4) entity.

4)Despite Rush Limbaugh's exaggerated claims, there was no limitation imposed by the IRS on these groups' ability to influence the 2012 election.

5)Many of the IRS requests for information came about because of activities observed by agents in real time.

80% of all c4 status requests came from conservative groups. Which means that only 2 out of every 10 c4 requests were from non-conservative groups. That's twenty percent. Approximately 300 total applications were chosen by IRS Cincy for extra scrutiny of which only 71 were from conservative groups. Benefit of the doubt here, let's call that 30%.

So, even though 80% of all c4 applications came from conservative groups....only 30% of all applications receiving extra scrutiny were from conservative groups. Which equates not to "conservative groups targeted by IRS" but instead "non-conservative groups targeted disproportionally for scrutiny by IRS." The question coming out of the mouths of the corporate media cognescenti should be "why were non-conservative c4 applicants singled out for extra scrutiny by the IRS?" Why did the IRS give preferential treatment to conservative groups when they applied for c4 tax exempt status? That's the "scandal" that the numerical facts show.

Just as Shirley Sherrod's maligned speech was, in the end, determined not to be racist at all....but just the too with the alleged IRS-targeting of conservative groups faux scandal. The truth is just the opposite. If numbers still are numbers then the real scandal in the IRS story is how corrupt, deceptive media has frantically turned the narrative on it's head.

I hold that the unfair and unjust targeting of Shirley Sherrod, disgracefully fired by Obama in a repulsive act of knee jerkitis, was one of our most childish and ignorant national political moments. Media and politicians swiftly, frenetically, acted to do exacly the wrong thing. Democrats and Republicans were equally guilty in that national embarrassment.....and now the same damn thing has happened again with the IRS faux scandal.

I'm not sure whether there is a "let's act like total effing idiots" switch somewhere at the crossroads of media and political life in only be flipped at strategic political times. Perhaps so. After all, how can the Iraqi WMD story, the let's bankrupt ACORN story and the let's fire Shirley Sherrod story be understood?

Now you'll have to excuse me. I'm going to go outside and setup 10 targets to throw rocks at. I intend to use pictures of progressive politicans BECAUSE I'm targeting conservatives.

Think about it.
