Is The Story Edward Snowden Or Government Crimes?

By The Reverend Published: July 3, 2013

The one thing I've learned through blogging these past years is that main corporate-controlled media in America....teevee, radio, print, longer understands it's job as being an adversary of the powerful for the sake of those who have no power. In fact, most liberals now regard corporate-controlled media as simply a servant of the powerful against the non-powerful.

As Stephen Colbert riffed at a White House Correspondent's Dinner a number of years ago...."reporters", "journalists" today write down what representatives of the powerful tell them and then consider their jobs done. Stenography rather than adversarial reporting.

In this 21st century U.S. paradigm, the only reason that Fox "News" stands out for liberals as exceptionally propagandistic and extreme is because Fox doesn't simply present the news based on how it pleases the powerful.....all corporate-controlled media does that....instead, Fox stands out because it has reduced how it reports on news stories down to what pleases the powerful among conservatives and Republicans only. Fox defends, and is an advocate for, the powerful....but only for powerful conservatives and corporations. That's the only thing that makes Fox stand out like a sore thumb on an entirely deformed hand.

Take the Edward Snowden story as an example. Let's look at how NBC's David Gregory interviewed Glenn Greenwald, columnist for the Guardian and the person whom Snowden leaked to.....

GREGORY: Final question for you…. To the extent that you have aided and abetted Snowden, even in his current movements, why shouldn’t you, Mr. Greenwald, be charged with a crime?

GREENWALD: I think it’s pretty extraordinary that anybody who would call themselves a journalist would publicly muse about whether or not other journalists should be charged with felonies.......

GREGORY: Well, the question of who’s a journalist may be up to a debate with regards to what you’re doing. And of course anybody who’s watching this understands I was asking a question; that question has been raised by lawmakers, as well. I’m not embracing anything......

The clue here is......"I was asking a question that has been raised by....lawmakers..."

Gregory asked that question because that question had been raised by the powerful whom Gregory works every Sunday on Meet the Press to please.

Also note that Gregory's response to Greenwald seems to imply that only those who ask the questions lawmakers and the powerful want asked are true journalists.

ABC's George Stephanopolous, another pleaser of the powerful and still playing the role of an honest to goodness reporter/journalist on the teevee......mimicked David asking Greenwald this past Sunday....

Stephanopolous: ..."You also drew new criticism yesterday from the director of national intelligence, James Clapper. He called the disclosures reckless. And added that the articles are filled with inaccuracies.Your response?"

Clapper represents those in government power who have been collecting every electronic communication by every American citizen since 9-11....yet still want to keep that truth hidden. Stephanopolous, because government representative Clapper isn't asking the questions, asks the government's question in Clapper's stead. Stephanopolous is simply playing the role of government surrogate here.

The powerful in government from Bush/Cheney to Obama/Biden have all done their best to keep Americans from finding out just how egregious and illegal their communications-vacuuming programs really are. The reason the powerful in government don't want Americans finding out about what they are doing, storing away all of our communications, has nothing to do with national security....but instead, it has to do with protecting the powerful from huge embarrassment and the political fallout such embarrassment would create.

And that explains why most of corporate-controlled media has been obsessed with Edward Snowden himself.....rather than on the nature of the information he leaked to Glenn Greenwald. Those in the corporate media who depend on access to powerful government representatives for their "reporting".....are fearful of offending those powerful folks with their "news" accounts. If these powerful government or corporate sources are offended by some truth telling by reporters, then future access to those powerful government sources will be jeopardized.

The essence of the Snowden leaked information is that America's Surveillance State has reached gargantuan proportions dwarfing the dire warnings of the Church Committee back in 1978. The U.S. Surveillance State has been, and still is, recording and storing every call, text, e-mail, tweet....whatever.....made by every citizen of the U.S....and all in secrecy and without judicial warrants.

It is that truth which powerful government officials all the way up to, and including, President Obama, do not want shared with the U.S. population.....because it makes them all look like tyrants and crooks.

It is corporate-controlled media's role today to shield the powerful from such alarming revelations.

Quite a predicament, no?
