Joe Barton, American Hero

By The Reverend Published: June 21, 2010

I happened to catch some of the back and forth last week between Tony Hayward of BP and members of the House Committee on Energy.

Unlike many, I found the statement of apology by BP's employee on the committee, Joe Barton (R-TX), to be clearheaded, honest and accurate.

Here are Barton's words....

"Now I’m going to speak totally for myself. I’m not speaking for the Republican party, I’m not speaking for anyone in the House of Representatives but myself – I’m ashamed at what happened in the White House yesterday. I think it is a tragedy in the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown – in this case a $20 billion shakedown. The attorney general of the United States, who is legitimately conducting a criminal investigation and has every right to do so to protect the interests of the American people, participated in what amounts to a $20 billion slush fund. That’s unprecedented in our nation’s history, has no legal standing and which sets, I think, a terrible precedent for the future.

I apologize. I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or corporation that does something that is legitimately wrong, is subject to some sort of political pressure that is again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize."

I couldn't have said it any better. What a Patriot!

Mr. Barton was referring to the agreement reached last Wednesday between BP officials and President Obama. BP agreed to set aside $20 billion to pay claims from thousands of victims along the Gulf Coast, forego near term dividend payments to stockholders, and accept full and unlimited responsibility for all the damages and the cleanup.

No wonder Joe Barton was offended. No wonder ole' pasty-faced, Patriotic Joe felt the need to apologize to BP for such unprecedented thuggish behavior by America's Socialist Dark Knight.

And here's why BP's employee in the House, Joe Barton, spot on in his evaluation:

When Wall Street's BOP (Blow Out Preventer) failed during the closing days of the reign of our Glorious Dear Leader, George W. Bush.....when toxic asset spills were sighted in all 50 states.....when millions of America's "small" people were confronted with foreclosure and bankruptcy because of the toxic asset spill....Government rewarded those Big Banksters with a $700 billion windfall bailout made up of tax payer dollars.

When Banksters spilled their stinking ooze of sh*t mortgage derivatives all over the nation's economy.....fouling up the lives of tens of millions of was the taxpayers, working Americans, not the Banksters, who were made to pay for the damages.

When Wall Street Titans,...the Risk Taking Entrepreneurs, the Movers and Shakers that they are....decided to take huge, 'mile-deep', gambling risks,....all made possible by their most treasured asset...the U.S. Senate.....those same Wall Street Titans didn't forego their billions in bonuses, didn't have to pay for any of the damages or cleanup, and certainly were not subjected to some government-gangsta "shakedown."

Instead, the toxic asset spill by the Risk Takers on Wall Street was an opportunity for America to shine, to show the world how accountability works in our oh-so-exceptional nation. When private, for-profit corporations, like, say, AIG, take way-more gambling risks then they can cover....and all that risk blows up covering the nation in recessionary slime......America, in it's singular wisdom, sets up a taxpayer fund FOR AIG.

Just as the toxic-asset spill was made possible by deregulatory forces inside Wall Street's most valuable asset....the U.S. too the oil spill by BP in very deep Gulf water. However, the U.S. Congress rewarded Wall Street's toxic spillers by setting up a "bailout fund" made up of taxpayer monies. Those bond and stock holders....not to mention the traders contractually bound to receive bonuses....were made whole. The "small" people? Not so much.

So why the unfair treatment of BP by our new Tyrannical Dark Knight president? Why the double standard?

If past is prologue, then any truly Patriotic President worth his dispersants should have announced last week that a Toxic Asset Relief Fund (TARF) was being set up for BP....using taxpayer monies, naturally.

What Joe Barton knows is that, in America, when Big, Yet Very Serious Multi-national, Professional, Risk Takers.....take risks which result in calamitous toxic ooze spillage of mass destruction....they are entitled to taxpayer funded relief. Why take risks for the, you know, "small" people.....without guarantees?

That's why Barton apologized the other day for the UnAmerican treatment of BP by America's first unAmerican President.

The United States does not "shakedown" our most valuable Movers and goodness, no...... we reward and respect our Great Benefactors.....the Entrepreneurial Risk Takers. Those Risk Takers are simply unassailable. I mean, for Christ's sake.....they take Risks.

Joe Barton's conclusion is the only legitimate conclusion a True American can embrace. We reward Risk Takers in the U.S. The "tragic" situation which took place in the Darkest of White Houses last week was witnessed in the fact that our Socialist Overlord refused to set up a taxpayer funded relief fund to help out BP in it's time of need.

Goddamn shame, ain't it?
