If I say today is Thursday and you also agree it is Thursday.....should both of us sit down to "negotiate" over whether, indeed, it's Thursday? And if we did.....what effing sense would that make? I'll leave it to you to do the translation.
On Tuesday, President Obama revealed once again his terrible addiction problem. Obama is addicted to the IDEA of bipartisan Kumbayah-ism. Instead of limiting his offer to anarchist House Republicans to what both sides already agree on.....the debt ceiling must be raised....the President fell off his 12 step program and extended an olive branch to our nation's most dangerous domestic enemies.....
“If they (Republicans) want to do that, reopen the government. Extend the debt ceiling. If they can’t do it for a long time, do it for the period of time in which these negotiations are taking place,” Obama said.
"do it for the period of time in which these negotiations are taking place." Five days, Mr. President? How would that be? Or, maybe two weeks....perhaps three weeks....a couple months? Or what if, Mr. President....congressional Republicans lift the debt ceiling....one day at a time? How would that work out for you? Instead of spooking the markets and the citizenry every two years.....why not do it monthly? Or every other week? Or daily?
Also, too Mr. President....what negotiations are you talking about? You mentioned that you would be happy to negotiate anything with Republicans....after the debt limit is increased and the government reopened. So, why not agree to a clean three week debt ceiling increase? Then, after the three weeks, the nation and the markets can replay this crisis......three more weeks, ditto....and so forth. How would that calm the markets and give Americans confidence.....Mr. President?
Or, was Obama.....the 11 dimensional, Jedi Knight, political chess player that he is.....hinting that he wants to make all Paul Ryan's Randian dreams come true? Here's what Mr. Ryan wrote in yesterday's Wall Street Journal Rag.....
We have an opportunity here to pay down the national debt and jump-start the economy, if we start talking, and talking specifics, now. To break the deadlock, both sides should agree to common-sense reforms of the country's entitlement programs and tax code.
Having already agreed to $2.4 trillion in deficit reduction.....during our worst modern economic downturn.....the center-right President Obama continues to toy with the idea of cutting Social Security and Medicare benefits in return for......well.....almost anything. GOP domestic terrorists are willing to offer up "tax reform" which would.....(you should know this by heart)...."broaden the (tax) base, eliminate tax deductions and lower rates." Republicans insist any tax reform must be revenue neutral because increasing revenue is take your pick......Satanic, Leninist, or the last Plague of the Apocalypse.
When the corporate-tool, Paul Ryan, explains his "common sense reforms"....he is referring to what is "common sense" among the top 2%. That's who Ryan works for. Taking money away from the elderly by cutting their SS checks and making them pay more for Medicare is just "common sense"......if what you're really after is...."reforms of the tax code." Translation: the 1% can't receive more tax cuts if geezers don't sacrifice to make it happen.
But my very favorite part of Ryan's op-ed Valentine to the 1% is this....paying down the national debt (by gutting geezer programs) will "jump start the economy."
Austerity that grows the economy. Cutting government spending and lowering tax rates on the wealthy will grow the economy.
In other words......pure fantasy.
The question now becomes whether Obama will accept a short term clean debt increase tethered to a new Super F**k-All Committee. The last Super Committee worked out so well and all....for the anarchists.....so why not a sequel? As a liberal, I do not trust Obama and Senate Democrats if they go down that road again with the New Confederates.
Republicans don't want to talk, compromise or negotiate. They want to dictate all policy from their minority perch. Compromise is an expletive to these nihilists. They are, right now, holding the nation's future hostage to their country-crippling demands.
So, no....Obama should stand his ground. Refuse any debt ceiling increase less than one full year......and without any concessions to the hostage takers. Republicans need an intervention.....their addiction to blackmail, hostage taking, ransom letter writing and such is totally out of control and dangerous for our country.
So man-up Mr. President. The approval numbers for the GOP are sinking like a large rock. Now's the time to irreparably break the back of a spun-out-of-control political party.
Because Mr. President...if you don't.....you will permanently weaken the Presidency, itself.....while guaranteeing a series of a thousand Republican cuts to the standard of living of average Americans.....and all for the sake of lowering tax rates on billionaires.
The words of Nancy Reagan are appropriate here, Mr. President.....Just. Say. No.
