The Stuff Adults Say

By The Reverend Published: July 31, 2012

Very busy this week.

Here's a couple of things I think are worthy of discussion.

Not Normal Times

By The Reverend Published: July 30, 2012

Angry, angry conservatives only want to talk about one subject this presidential campaign season....only one....the national economy during President Obama's 3 1/2 years in office. Despite the incontrovertible fact that over the last 2+ years our economy has begun to recover from the tragic national financial collapse caused by deregulating private sector banksters....Mitt Romney, all Republicans, well as all conservative media members...claim that Obama has been a total failure when it comes to economic matters.

Perspective is needed.

Tiny Doofus

By The Reverend Published: July 27, 2012

This is what GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, told NBC's Brian Williams about the United Kingdom's hosting of the Olympic Games....

"You know, it's hard to know just how well it will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting," Romney said.".

GOP Plan To Kill The Poor

By The Reverend Published: July 26, 2012

Yesterday, the Senate voted 51-48 to extend the Bush era tax cuts for one more year for all households making less than $250,000 per year. A bill in the Senate extending all Bush tax cuts for another year was defeated 45-54. The House will vote on the issue next week. The GOP controlled House is expected to pass an extension for all taxpayers, and more than likely, defeat any proposal which ends Bush era tax cuts for America's richest citizens.

While these votes are primarily for theatrical, election-year posturing purposes, Republicans are making it crystal clear that they will defend to the death the rights of our richest few to never again pay more in taxes. For perspective, I must remind readers that America's richest haven't paid lower tax rates since Harry Truman was president.

Mitt Wants...."To Help The Rich"

By The Reverend Published: July 25, 2012

Not unexpectedly, Mitt Romney has decided to double down on his totally disingenuous take on President Obama's comment concerning government's role in providing infrastructure, education, safety forces and judicial systems to business and residential communities.

The Romney campaign donned it's L'il Jim O'Keefe Out-of-Context Pimp Costume last week and is now proceeding to go all in claiming that Obama told business owners straight out...."you didn't build that",....claiming that Obama said that business owners didn't build their own businesses.

Gun Regulations: "Reduces American's Freedoms"

By The Reverend Published: July 24, 2012

From Colorado to Maine and all points in between.....

Upon pulling him over, police found an assault rifle, four handguns and several boxes of ammunition, they said. Also found inside his car were recent news clippings of the mass shooting at the Colorado movie theater, police said. Police said Courtois then admitted to police he had attended the Batman movie at the Cinemagic Theater in Saco Saturday night with a loaded gun in his backpack. He also told authorities that he was on his way to Derry, N.H. to shoot a former employer.

What's Mitt Hiding From "You People?"

By The Reverend Published: July 20, 2012

Theories abound over why Mitt Romney refuses to release more than one 2010 tax return and one incomplete 2011 tax return.

Some observers suggest that releasing more years of tax returns may show the multi-millionaire candidate paid no federal taxes at all in the year 2009. The market plummeted in 2008.....and Mr. Romney may have actually lost money on paper that year. I don't buy into this theory because one year of zero taxes, especially after an historic financial collapse, is no worse than Romney's owning of multiple offshore tax haven accounts.

Who "Saved" The 2002 Olympics?

By The Reverend Published: July 19, 2012

Mitt Romney and his campaign handlers chose to focus on the ex-governor's work at Bain Capital as his number one qualification to become our nation's next president. Makes sense. Romney, literally, made a fortune during the Bain years. The talking points seemed natural.

The U.S. economy is sluggishly recovering... but with unemployment still at over 8%....Mitt and his crew calculated that focusing on Romney's 'vast business experience and success' at Bain as Mitt's main strength would be a no brainer. The clarion call went out.....Mitt Romney knows how the economy works because he's had vast experience in that economy, and he has become fabulously wealthy as a result of that seasoned experience.

"Unsuccessful" Straw Man Building

By The Reverend Published: July 18, 2012

What does it mean to be a "success?" To Mitt Romney, success means becoming wealthy. The GOP presidential candidate, in a speech in Pennsylvania yesterday, explained that being a "success" in America means that you own and run a business venture and have become wealthy doing so. To Mitt, to be a "success", you must be an "innovator", an "entrepreneur", or a "business owner."

Romney explains.....

Secretive, Deceptive Candidate

By The Reverend Published: July 17, 2012

Yesterday, the faith-based conservative media usual-suspects....Fox, Heritage, Limbaugh....keenly aware that their GOP presidential candidate is imploding before American voter's eyes over tax returns he's hiding as well as his ridiculous notion of a "retroactive retirement".....grasped for the only tool in their back pocket......deception. Some might call it disinformation, some might call it desperation......I call it what it is: dishonest deception.

On Friday, President Obama spoke in Virginia waxing all Elizabeth Warren-y....

Why America Is Exceptional

By The Reverend Published: July 13, 2012

I wanted to say something about this story last week.....but the Mittster's been so much fun lately, I didn't get to it.

I know that we are a nation of laws, not men. How do I know this? Because everyone is treated equally before the law in America. I mean, right? We don't call America "exceptional" for no good reason. And one of those "shining city on a hill" examples to other not-exceptional nations is our adherence to a rule of law which is applied to all people equally. Young or old, rich or poor, man or woman.......all U.S. citizens are treated equally before the law.

Baiting And Being Booed

By The Reverend Published: July 12, 2012

You may have already heard that GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, was booed during his speech to the NAACP Convention yesterday in Houston. It was perhaps Romney's most cynical moment. At first, I gave Romney some credit because, unlike George W. Bush, Mitt agreed to speak to the minority group as a presidential candidate who would like to be the president of all Americans...not just one privileged class with pale skin.

But after examining what Romney said during his Houston speech....and then later what he said in Montana last night....I see Romney's speech before the NAACP as just another opportunity to bait the far right base. Yes....that's what I said, the far right base.

Freedom To Suppress Votes

By The Reverend Published: July 11, 2012

Mitt Romney defends efforts by red state governors and legislatures to suppress voting.....

"I support efforts to say, look, we want people to come in and make sure they're a citizen of the United States and that they haven't voted multiple times and they're not voting for someone who's passed away," Romney said at a forum in Chester Township, Pa., in April. "I know a number of states are doing that, and we have the attorney general of the United States trying to keep that from happening."

States Can Not Nullify Federal Law

By The Reverend Published: July 10, 2012

Yesterday, I happened to see a quick interview of failed GOP presidential primary candidate, Texas Governor, Rick Perry. They say everything is bigger in Texas. I think that includes the cluelessness of it's politicians.

"If anyone had any doubt, we wanted to put it clearly to bed...that Texas wasn't gonna be a part of this expanding, socializing of our medicine. So, we're not going to participate in exchanges, we're not gonna expand Medicaid. We're just not gonna be a part of, again, socializing health care in the state of Texas in direct conflict with our Founding Fathers wishes....and freedom for that matter. People need to be free to make those decisions about health care. Not be forced by this administration into these exchanges or into bankrupting states with the expansion of Medicaid."

Romney's Zombie Prediction

By The Reverend Published: July 9, 2012

On November 18, 2008, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, authored an op-ed appearing in the NY Times entitled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." G.W. Bush was still president

IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Swiss Mitt

By The Reverend Published: July 6, 2012

A $3 million Swiss bank account appeared in (Romney's) 2010 returns, then winked out of existence in 2011 after the trustee closed it....

Ed Kleinbard, a professor of tax law at the University of Southern California, says the Swiss account “has political but not tax-policy resonance,” since it—like many other Romney investments—constituted a bet against the U.S. dollar, an odd thing for a presidential candidate to do. The Obama campaign provided a helpful world map pointing to the tax havens Bermuda, Luxembourg, and the Cayman Islands, where Romney and his family have assets, each with the tagline “Value: not disclosed in tax returns.”

Uniquely Disqualified

By The Reverend Published: July 5, 2012

Yesterday's Wall Street Journal...

The tragedy is that for the sake of not abandoning his faulty health-care legacy in Massachusetts, Mr. Romney is jeopardizing his chance at becoming President.

Punishing Your Own

By The Reverend Published: July 3, 2012

As Digby pointed out yesterday, the most progressive part of the Affordable Care Act is Medicaid expansion. A good portion of the new millions who will have access to healthcare under Obamacare will come from the Medicaid provision. The bill establishes qualification levels for Medicaid at up to 133% of the poverty level.

When the ACA is fully implemented in 2014, the federal government will pay for 100% of expanded Medicaid expenses for three years. After the first three years, states will then pay 10% of expanded Medicaid costs, the feds paying 90%.

What Kills? Guns, Or People?

By The Reverend Published: July 2, 2012

It's important to note that the National Rifle Association announced prior to the House vote on contempt of Congress charges against AG Eric Holder that the organization would be "scoring" the contempt vote. Naturally, that was meant as a warning to any wavering GOP members and any Blue Dog Democrats thinking about voting no. Implicit in the "scoring" announcement was a threat from the NRA that they would withhold campaign funds from any congressman voting against contempt charges and encourage voters to toss all "no" voters out of Congress this November.

The contempt vote held last Thursday, a political stunt rivaling the Terri Schiavo fiasco, was successful. For the first time in American history a member of the presidential administration has been held in contempt of Congress by the House. All this over gunwalking by ATF personnel. Here's one gun enthusiast's brief take on Fast and Furious.....
