Late Night Comedy: The New Conservative War Front

By The Reverend Published: April 11, 2014

If you have never watched Steven Colbert's brilliant takedown of the entire Bush administration and the media members who adored him at the 2006 White House Correspondents should.

Colbert is a genius when it comes to ironic humor. Whereas Jon Stewart's schtick is often predictable, what with the often-annoying, staged bleeping of Stewart's various usages of the F-word....Colbert's faux-conservative imitation on his show is comedic brilliance which successfully unmasks the phoniness of many political players.

Now that Colbert has been announced as David Letterman's replacement starting next year.....the usual-suspect conservative censors have soiled their shorts. I don't watch late night teevee shows anymore, comedic or otherwise, but when I did, I never found Jay Leno to be funny, for example. A nice guy, but not funny. I always saw Leno as my generation's version of Bob Hope, another seemingly nice guy who was not funny.

But David Letterman had his moments. He could be very that insane-humor kind of way that crazier folks like The Reverend can appreciate....and besides, Letterman always had better musical groups on his Late Night program. Steven Colbert, as Letterman's replacement, is not only wildly funny at times but when it comes to political humor....Colbert is unrivaled. He's the perfect fit for the CBS 11:30pm slot.

And the most prominent conservative comedian knows that.

Here is Rush Limbaugh's take on the Colbert announcement.....

"CBS has just declared war on the Heartland of America. No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, (and) conservatives.....

It's the media planting a flag here. I think it's maybe the media's last stand, but it's a declaration. There's no unity in this hire. They've hired a partisan, so-called comedian to run a comedy show."

Yes, CBS....the network which produced the entirely-bogus Lara Logan "special" on Benghazi.....has declared war on the hiring Steven Colbert to replace Letterman. My goodness, the shame, CBS has hired a "partisan" to do late night comedy. That's just way too much freedom.

Having successfully marginalized to internet blogs any truth-telling....conservative players have set their sights now on comedy shows. You see, because corporate media has that troubling word "corporate" in it.....only the "news" that corporations who sponsor those programs favor is permitted to be shared with audiences. It's called the dumbing down of America....and for good reason....profits.

What I have often found strange the last few years, however, is the popularity of comedy shows like Colbert's and Stewart's. What those two comedians say on their comedy shows usually appears as "news" the next day. That seems out of whack....but it's because those comedy shows are among the few remaining sources for political truth to be found in corporate media.

It's similar to how American teevee controlled the black-white divide when I was a teenager. Racial issues could be presented during the 60's but only if couched safely within a comedy parameter. Think: The Jeffersons. I would argue that same-sex issues have been treated similarly.

Sadly, fifty years later, that's where we remain. Political truth is still permitted on corporate teevee but only if positioned within a context of comedy.

With Colbert's move to late night on a major network, however, even comedy must now be censored. Thus, the reaction yesterday by the conservative controllers of "reality."

When conservatives speak about their "message"...and how best to deliver that "message" ....a significant portion of that effort in narrative-control is preventing the truth about conservative ideology and policies from being heard. Think about it.....even the warnings from Pope Francis about conservative economic policies had to be neutralized.

Far from being a movement of freedom, conservatism is proving to be a movement of authoritarian control of all things Americans are allowed to see and hear on corporate teevee.

No, Limbaugh's petty wingnuttery will not stop Colbert from replacing Letterman....but his warning to control-minded conservatives marks the opening of yet another warfront against truth-telling on the teevee.

No matter in what form truth is found still remaining on corporate television.....conservatives will fight to the death to eliminate it. And they are winning. Political truth, policy truth, current events truth, historical truth....must be muted....and to a large degree, have been.

Now if they can only stop the comedians.
