Because I work extremely hard to maintain, you know, civility....here on the blog....I have waited until after Christmas to mention anything about how people like The Reverend have been under attack this Christmas season.
Contrary to popular...um....belief....atheists have feelings too. But because atheists understand that the world doesn't revolve around them, unlike some grifter book sellers with very low IQ's and no capacity for self-awareness, I have purposely waited until after the Christmas holiday to bring my grievance before the blogospheric community.
The following is representative of Mrs. Sarah Palin's two month long sales pitch to Christian admirers......
…(Sarah) Palin said (3rd President Thomas) Jefferson would likely agree that secularists had set their sights on destroying the religious themes in Christmas celebrations.
“He would recognize those who would want to try to ignore that Jesus is the reason for the season, those who would want to try to abort Christ from Christmas,” she said. “He would recognize that, for the most part, these are angry atheists armed with an attorney. They are not the majority of Americans.”
The brilliantly cerebral former running mate of Johnny Mac is right about one thing.....atheists are not a majority in America, far from it....
The poll, called "The Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism," found that the number of Americans who say they are "religious" dropped from 73 percent in 2005 (the last time the poll was conducted) to 60 percent.
At the same time, the number of Americans who say they are atheists rose, from 1 percent to 5 percent.
But there is some hope for the hopelessly faithless.....
Surveys designed to overcome the understandable reluctance to admit atheism have found that as many as 60 million Americans — a fifth of the population — are not believers.
Oh, my....it would seem we have a huge number of closeted, sleeper cell, atheists in our midst....which either means Americans need to buy more guns in preparation for the coming Atheist Apocalypse, or.....atheists, just like Christians, Jews and Muslims, are our neighbors, friends, family members and...local bloggers. Imagine that.
Now I realize that referencing Mrs. Palin in the same sentence as Thomas Jefferson seems, I don't know, obscene.....but Mrs. Palin went there first...so blame her. Mrs. Palin hijacked old Tom to help her sell books.....suggesting that Jefferson would be on her side in her self-declared "war on atheists."
Was Thomas Jefferson a born-again, fundamentalist Christian believer who would join with the religious far right of today in bashing a tiny minority of unbelieving "angry" atheists....or not?
"Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus."
Shrill or uncivil? Which?
"Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law."
Huh? Do you mean to tell us, Tom....that our nation's laws and Constitution are not based on Judeo-Christian beliefs? The hell you say.
What about the veracity of the Bible? Surely....Tom.....you wouldn't "abort" the virgin-birthed baby savior from Christmas....would you?
"The whole history of these books [the Gospels] is so defective and doubtful that it seems vain to attempt minute enquiry into it: and such tricks have been played with their text, and with the texts of other books relating to them, that we have a right, from that cause, to entertain much doubt what parts of them are genuine. In the New Testament there is internal evidence that parts of it have proceeded from an extraordinary man; and that other parts are of the fabric of very inferior minds. It is as easy to separate those parts, as to pick out diamonds from dunghills."
Think Sarah knows about those Jefferson quotes?
Thomas Jefferson had the audacity to write his own version of the New Testament Bible. In it, Jefferson removed all supernatural references. Among the supernatural stuff Jefferson omitted was.....yep....the virgin-birth, three wise men, star in the heavens, angels appearing, supernatural account of the Christmas story. In other words.....the Nativity Scene.
Can you even imagine Thomas Jefferson fielding questions about his personal beliefs in one of today's presidential "debates?" I can't either.....he would never get that far.....whether "armed with an attorney", or not.
Because atheists are a forgiving lot, I will not take Mrs. Palin's two month-long "war on atheists" personally. But Jefferson? He was much more "uncivil."
Why Jefferson, today, might even have the stones to call the virgin birth, the trinity, the "miracles" of Jesus......part of a steaming "dunghill" from which a few "diamonds" might be gleaned.
Thomas Jefferson must have been a very "angry", arrogant man. Amirite?
