Meet The Redistributionists

By The Reverend Published: November 30, 2012

I do not shop at either Wal-Mart or Sam's Club. Ever.

On Black Friday I visited my local Wal-Mart parking lot to see if there were any Wal-Mart workers out front protesting the company's miserly treatment of workers on Wal-Mart Worker Walkout Black Friday. There weren't. And that's too bad because the piddling amounts paid out by the mammoth retailer to it's workforce.....should be of greater concern to all of us.

What Pro-Growth Means To The GOP

By The Reverend Published: November 29, 2012

Republicans demand "pro-growth" policies. They say it, like, all of the time. Paul Ryan: "We have to show the country that we have a pro-growth plan to get people back to work, to get this economy growing again."  Here's the same GOP policy, written by GOP'er Ed Rogers from the negative perspective, but saying the same thing: Republicans should at least make a clear case outlining why we are against raising anyone's taxes. Simply put, raising taxes is anti-growth.....So Republicans, don't go wobbly; protect the idea that the GOP is the pro-growth party.

You may find it odd that in the real world there is no cause and effect relationship between cutting taxes and our national economy growing jobs, consumer demand or GDP. But that's the truth. And that is because cutting taxes, especially those that primarily benefit high income earners, does not result in more jobs, more consumer demand, or a higher GDP for the nation.

Huckleberry: "More Disturbed Now Than Ever"

By The Reverend Published: November 28, 2012

Even though UN Ambassador Susan Rice met voluntarily yesterday with GOP Senators Graham, McCain and Ayotte to answer questions about "her role" in press appearances following the violent attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.....those GOP senators came away from that meeting "more troubled, not less" than they had been before......a response which was entirely predictable before the meeting.

These GOP senators don't want answers and are not looking for any answers.....they are looking to expand a political spectacle they created out of whole Foxian cloth. Fast and Furious, like Whitewater during Clinton's presidency, has been a disappointment for Republicans intent on bringing impeachment charges against another Democratic President. The three GOP senators who met with Rice yesterday were hoping that their continuing political exploitation of four dead Americans in Benghazi would finally uncover a new Stained Blue Dress.

Playing All Of Us For Suckers

Barack Obama, October 2008....

Tom Brokaw: "Would you give Congress a date certain to reform Social Security and Medicare within two years after you take office because in a bipartisan way everyone agrees that's the big ticking time bomb that will eat us up maybe even more than the mortgage crisis?"

Who Now Leads The GOP?

By The Reverend Published: November 26, 2012

Republicans are currently leaderless. Take a look around. Which GOP celebrity is now leading the the Grand Old Party?

Give up yet? Since the election, the two guys acting as spokesmen-leaders for the GOP are two angry old white guys, Senator John McCain (AZ) and Senator Lindsey Graham (SC). The Three Old Amigos minus Joementum Lieberman.

Thanksgiving & Other Coming Attractions

By The Reverend Published: November 21, 2012

I've been patiently reading conservative political material since the election, looking for some consensus within conservative circles explaining what happened on November 6th. But try as I might, I cannot find a consensus. Many scattershot excuses for another GOP presidential candidate going down to defeat....and even some conspiracy theories....but no coherent explanation setting forth the real reasons for Romney's loss. I mean, other than all those Obama "gifts".

Following the Republican electoral loss, I had been hoping for a bit of humility, or at least some honest self-reflection on the part of GOP operatives, pundits and politicians.....but quite frankly, I'm not seeing it. Hope is like that sometimes.

The Essence Of The Benghazi Dispute

By The Reverend Published: November 20, 2012

On June 4th, 2009 President Obama delivered his "Cairo speech" in Egypt. Here is how that speech was critiqued by Politico writer, Josh Gernstein....

"(Obama) managed never to utter the one word that comes to mind most often when many Americans think about Islam: terrorism."

Ohio's GOP Waging War Against Women

By The Reverend Published: November 16, 2012

Conservatives and Republicans insist that they have not been conducting a political
"war on women."

Virginia GOP Governor Bob McDonnell put it this way last March...."This 'war on women' argument is very unfortunate," he told John King. "It's false, and it's been the political theater for the Democrats for the past couple of months."

Raising Medicare Age Unacceptable

By The Reverend Published: November 15, 2012

Remember the Grand Bargain talks from last summer? We were told then that President Obama and John Boehner were on the verge of a Grand Bargain over government spending and taxes. Eventually, the bargaining talks collapsed which eventually led to the Great Debt Limit Crisis of August, 2011.....which in turn led to the the failed Super Committee....which took us to sequestration. Sequestration, (cutting approximately $110 billion per year starting January 1st, the cuts equally divided between defense and domestic discretionary spending) is what both sides are trying to avoid right now.

During the Grand Bargain talks this was reported....

Surveillance State Brought Petraeus Down

By The Reverend Published: November 14, 2012

"Every day, collection systems at the National Security Agency intercept and store 1.7 billion e-mails, phone calls and other types of communications." All those daily intercepts are conveniently done without judicial warrants, as the Constitution demands.

The above quote is from the 2010 Washington Post series: "Top Secret America." During the Bush administration (and continued by the Obama administration) our government began eavesdropping on and intercepting any and all electronic communications made by Americans. This is all in violation of our 4th Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure.....but it continues each and every day of the year.

Obama, The Center-Right Democratic President

By The Reverend Published: November 13, 2012

During the election campaign, Mr. Romney said he had a plan to lower income tax rates by 20% across the board and pay for those deep tax cuts by closing tax deduction loopholes in the IRS code, aka, 'broadening the base.' To me, Romney's plan was kind of silly because lowering tax rates reduces revenue and closing tax loopholes raises revenue.....with a net gain to everyone involved being zero.

The problem with Mr. Romney's plan, as the tax Policy Center pointed out at the time, was that even if all current loopholes were closed on the top 2% that still would not raise enough revenue to offset the revenue lost due to lowering income tax rates by 20%.

Surging Conspiracy

Act two of Kabuki Benghazi is scheduled for this Thursday in the Senate. Kabuki Benghazi, Act One starred Darrell Issa and was absolutely not....pinky attempt to embarrass or do damage to President Obama just before the election.

Act Two of Kabuki Benghazi will star Diane Feinstein and Saxby Chambliss....two veteran corporatist senators who hold their high Senate Intelligence Committee positions in order to better serve the military-industrial complex which put them there.

What Fiscal Cliff?

By The Reverend Published: November 10, 2012

Is there a difference between falling off a cliff and walking down a hillside? Somebody needs to explain the difference to the Village media crows.....because they are nearing hysteria in their frenzy to scare us all over something not really scary. Seriously....there is no "fiscal cliff."....just as sure as there were no WMD's in Iraq.

What happens come January 1? The Bush-era tax cuts expire.....including income, capital gains and dividend tax rates. Obama's payroll tax rollback expires. Just as importantly, the terms of the notorious "sequester" kick in with these consequences for the military-industrial complex....

The 47% Want Free Stuff

By The Reverend Published: November 9, 2012

There's a "common thread" being woven by those on the right who have been busy licking their political wounds after Republicans lost their fifth out of the last six presidential popular votes Tuesday. In a roundabout way, that common thread helps us to better understand something else as well.....what extreme conservatives and the Tea Party mean when they say they want to "take their country back."

What Message Did Voters Send On Tuesday?

By The Reverend Published: November 8, 2012

Did the nation give evidence on Tuesday that we are moving to the right,...or to the left....or is there no evidence of movement at all?

David Espos of the AP says today that the election offered "mixed-verdict results." Did it?

Obama Wins Easily, Dems Hold Senate

By The Reverend Published: November 7, 2012

Later today, the final electoral college vote count will be announced as: Obama 332, Romney 206. Florida had Obama leading at 5AM by 45,000 votes and I expect the state to be called for the president before noon today. The only popular vote spread I could find was here.....which had Obama up approximately one and a half million votes. Obama, 56,307,000.....Romney 54,827,000.

Last night, Obama lost Indiana and North Carolina from his 2008 victory list....yet easily won re-election. As advertised, Ohio was last night's pivotal state. When Ohio was called for Obama around 11PM, the contest was over.

The Silver Bullet

By The Reverend Published: November 6, 2012

In the 2008 election, Nate Silver "predicted the popular vote within one percentage point, predicted 49 of 50 states’ results correctly, and predicted all of the resolved Senate races correctly." And that was after predicting an Obama primary win over Hillary in which Silver came within an eyelash of predicting the exact number of SuperTuesday delegates for Obama.

Accuracy like that is the reason why Nate Silver has come under attack by many conservative hacks this election cycle. You see....Mr. Silver has predicted an Obama win today. And not a "too close to call" Obama win like Villager, Charles Babington, says in today's AB Journal front page article.

Impending GOP Defeat The Fault Of The Tea Party

By The Reverend Published: November 5, 2012

From the moment CNBC's Rick Santelli launched his "new Tea Party" rant in February, 2009, this blogger has followed the anti-Obama movement. Tea Party leaders and loyalists of the oddly-named group came together only 30 days after Mr. Obama's inauguration, we're told, because of "policy differences" with the nation's first black president.

T.E.A represented "Taxed Enough Already", we were told, even though federal tax rates at the beginning of 2009 were at 60 year lows. Furthermore, the Obama stimulus legislation, passed on February 17, 2009, included additional tax relief for all working Americans with his payroll tax cut.

Ohioans: Remember SB5 On Tuesday

By The Reverend Published: November 4, 2012

Ohio voters came out in droves last November soundly rejecting GOP Governor John Kasich's attempt to end collective bargaining rights for public sector union workers. The vote was 63% against SB5, 37% for SB5. A resounding defeat for Ohio Republicans intent on suppressing wages, busting unions and privatizing public education and other public services.

Mitt Romney, October 26,2011...."I fully support Gov. (John) Kasich's - I think it's called Question Two in Ohio. Fully support that," Romney said after visiting a local GOP office in the Washington suburbs. "Actually, on my website, I think back as early as April, I laid out that I support Question Two and Gov. Kasich's effort to restrict collective bargaining in Ohio."

Romney Threatens All Americans

By The Reverend Published: November 3, 2012

When George W. Bush was president, Republican congressional figures voted 7 times in favor of raising the nation's credit limit. 7 times. In those seven separate votes by Republicans to raise the national debt ceiling, not once did Republican congressional figures take a hostage.

While Bush was doubling the national debt in 8 years, 7 times requesting, and receiving, increases to our nation's credit limit....not once did conservative fiscal hawks come forward with a ransom note for Mr. Bush. Not once did Very Serious Republicans in Congress threaten Mr. Bush, saying that if he didn't agree to cut spending they would shut down the government and jeopardize the credit rating of the U.S.

Mr. Romney & Disaster Relief

By The Reverend Published: November 1, 2012

Asked about devastating tornadoes at the time in Joplin, Missouri and elsewhere, GOP primary candidate, Mitt Romney responded to a question by CNN's John King inquiring whether disaster relief should be handled by the states rather than the federal government. Here's Mr. Romney's response....

"Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better."
