Almost cartoonishly.....check that.....cartoonishly, Republican political opportunists, like Peter King (R-NY), have been chastising President Obama for not using the words "terror" and "terrorist" enough when communicating to the American people.
"I think one main thing would be to -- just himself, to use the word terrorism more often."
The as yet undicted war criminal, Richard Cheney, in his great and sober wisdom, gives direction to President Obama, accusing him of "pretending we're not at war".....
"He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won't be at war," Cheney said, according to CNN. "He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of 9/11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won't be at war. He seems to think if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core al-Qaeda-trained terrorists still there, we won't be at war."
To his discredit.....Obama obediently listened to Richard Cheney and responded this way yesterday as he spoke about the underwear bomber guy episode....
"We are at war, we are at war against al-Qaeda."
Often, here at The Blog of Mass Destruction, I have stated that the U.S. is not at war. Not in the mainstream understanding of that word. Many conservative readers have chided me for saying such a "crazy" thing.
Yes, the U.S., and much of the world, is confronting a tiny group of international anarchist suicide killers....yes. But to say we are "at war" simply plays into the game plan of Islamic radicals, as well as the objectives of dangerous American neo-conservatives......while doing nothing to inform and educate the American people. Americans, who are still treading water from the mental flood of propaganda which continually washed over them the last 9 years....need understanding, not more propaganda.
"enemy combatants"....."special military tribunals"....."the terrorists war against us"....."everything has changed"....
Those are misguided, yet purposeful, neo-conservative branding phrases. Repeated enough, those phrases become a means to an end. Everything about the Bush administration's dealing with the 9-11 aftermath was molded to fulfill the wishes (occupy Iraq among other things) of powerful Project for the New American Century, new conservatives. The endless repetition of these branding phrases was a way for the Bushies to usurp more authority for the executive branch than our Constitution permits while, at the same time, scaring Americans sufficiently enough to prevent a challenge to that usurpation.
If it hadn't have been for America's judicial system, the Bushies would have gotten away with all of it. That's a tribute to the American system of government. The Supremes slapped Bush a couple of times for his lawlessness, so did district judges. The judicial system, unlike the corporate-whore media system, doesn't just accept neo-con branding phrases as gospel.
Reid: "I am at war with your country. I'm at war with them not for personal reasons but because they have murdered more than, so many children and they have oppressed my religion and they have oppressed people for no reason except that they say we believe in Allah."
Judge: "You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier gives you far too much stature."
Judge: "So war talk is way out of line in this court."
Judge: "You're no warrior. I know warriors. You are a terrorist. A species of criminal guilty of multiple attempted murders."
When you hear the usual-suspect American neo-cons braying on about Obama not using the word "terrorism" enough, or not thinking we are at "war", or not declaring the underwear bomber guy an "enemy combatant",.....when you hear the phony neo-con cries to try these "enemy combatants" anywhere else but "U.S. soil"....
Consider these Greenwald words....
"It's so striking how often the agenda of America's Right and the desires of Al Qaeda Terrorists perfectly coincide."
