The 1% Doctrine And Guns

By The Reverend Published: January 31, 2013

The yet-unindicted war criminal and still enemy of the state, Dick famous for coming up with the "1% doctrine" in November, 2001.

1% doctrine origination: "If there's a 1% chance that Pakistani scientists are helping al-Qaeda build or develop a nuclear weapon, we have to treat it as a certainty in terms of our response. It's not about our analysis ... It's about our response."

Minimum Wage Increases Are Pro-Growth

By The Reverend Published: January 30, 2013

The praying mantis look-a-like Ann Coulter famously told a fellow Foxian that if New Jersey Governor Chris Christie did not enter the 2012 GOP presidential primary race, then Mitt Romney would be the GOP's candidate and the GOP would lose. Christie refused to run in 2012 and Coulter's prediction wound up becoming a good call for a Foxian least the 'Romney losing' part.

If you are to be taken seriously in the Village, you must believe and then nod politely when others say that Chris Christie is a very, very serious future contender for the presidency. Recent polling data on Christie is interesting....

Oh-So-Exceptionally Free

By The Reverend Published: January 29, 2013

When Barack Obama ran for the presidency in 2008 one of his campaign promises was to close America's first recognized offshore gulag....Guantanamo. Whether you know it or not....main Serious media has little interest.....we've just passed the 11 year anniversary of the first official American gulag opening for business.

The president still maintains that his desire is to close the offshore prison which still houses 166 "detainees", many having been held there since the grand opening (How long does a person have to be locked away before he's not simply being "detained?")....Obama, 2012....

Reince, Shampoo, Repeat

By The Reverend Published: January 28, 2013

The Chairman of the political party, the party which lost the presidency and lost seats in both the Senate and the House in an election cycle when Republicans were expected to retake the Senate and the White House, told conservative leaders this weekend that whatever the reason for the GOP butt-kicking in wasn't because of policies....

“It’s not the platform of the party that’s the issue,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said Friday after being easily reelected to a second, two-year term. “In many cases, it’s how we communicate about it. It is a couple dumb things that people have said.”

Things We Do Not Speak Of......Jobs

By The Reverend Published: January 26, 2013

NBC Politics informs me that President Obama has an "ambitious" agenda for his second term. That agenda consists of a "debt fight, gun control and immigration." NBC informs me that those three issues "top the president's to-do list." Climate change could be thrown into that agenda mix as well.....but everyone knows nothing will ever be passed other than token measures on carbon I'm setting that aside for today.

The "debt fight" is being handled by the House Republicans who will either shut down the government in late March, early April....or have the U.S. default on it's debt....or both. Either that, or Medicare eligibility age will be raised to 67 or 68, Social Security checks trimmed by .3% and the Department of Energy and the EPA eliminated.....among other massive GOP-endorsed cuts.

Hillary Smacks Down Conservative Lies

By The Reverend Published: January 25, 2013

If you read here regularly, you know that the Benghazi, Libya "scandal" is no such thing. Yes, sadly, 4 Americans died in the aftermath of an extremist attack on the American consulate there.....but ratcheted-up claims that Obama, Hillary,, were involved in covering up something or lying about something for political gain over Benghazi is simply the stuff of conspiracy theories.

Mitt Romney learned his Benghazi lesson the hard way when he orchestrated his own humiliation on the subject by mockingly questioning Barack Obama at a presidential debate over whether the president spoke the words "act of terror" the morning after the Benghazi attack.

The Entitled

By The Reverend Published: January 24, 2013

Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony and other top Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles officials concealed child molestation incidents by priests from law enforcement as late as 1987, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.

Citing newly released internal Church records, the report says that Archbishop Roger Mahony, who is now retired, and his top adviser on child sex abuse cases, Monsignor Thomas Curry, worked with other Church officials in 1987 to send priests accused of abuse out of state to avoid prosecution.

America Is Not A Center-Right Nation

By The Reverend Published: January 23, 2013

According to former Bush speechwriter, Michael Gerson,  2008 loser John McCain, and a host of Foxian characters, President Obama was very, very naughty in his 2nd Inaugural address on Monday.

GOP Senator John Thune, representing the powerful in South Dakota, spoke of his disappointment that the Democratic president, reviled by conservatives and Republicans for 4 years running, didn't do any "outreach" towards Republicans in the address.....

Normalizing Firearms In Public

By The Reverend Published: January 22, 2013

On January 13th, two 22 year old Oregon men decided to exercise their 2nd amendment rights to scare and intimidate other citizens by strapping to their backs AR-15 Bushmaster semi-automatic rifles and proceeding to slowly stroll the sidewalks of the Portland neighborhood of Sellwood.

The two men were within their rights to scare and intimidate other citizens by openly bearing their mass murder tools. They had permits, they broke no laws. The two youngsters, really, said they were out to educate their uneducated neighborhood....

2nd Amendment And 'Slave Patrols'

By The Reverend Published: January 19, 2013

One good thing about life is learning new things. I learn new stuff all the time. It's invigorating. Radio personality, author and all around very smart guy, Thom Hartmann, taught me something this week that I didn't know.

The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified, and why it says "State" instead of "Country" (the Framers knew the difference - see the 10th Amendment), was to preserve the slave patrol militias in the southern states, which was necessary to get Virginia's vote. Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason, and James Madison were totally clear on that . . . and we all should be too.

Most Anti-Business President Ever

By The Reverend Published: January 18, 2013

Intel CEO, Paul Otellini, August, 2010......

"In our judgment, we have reached a point where the negative effects of these policies are simply too significant to ignore," said the man pursuing policies at odds with the interests of nearly every Internet user in America. "By reaching into virtually every sector of economic life, government is injecting uncertainty into the marketplace and making it harder to raise capital and create new businesses."

The Will Of "Corporations Are People Too"

By The Reverend Published: January 17, 2013

I've never believed that the NRA or the loudest proponents of unlimited weaponry ownership have been motivated by fealty to the 2nd amendment. I could be mistaken, but I don't think so. Instead, the NRA is simply doing the will of corporate gun manufacturers and sellers.....protecting, promoting and defending corporate gun makers constitutional rights to make endless profit.

Okay, maybe making profit is not a constitutional right...but you know what I'm getting at. Corporations, by their very nature....not being, you know, people and all,.....have no soul, no emotions, no heart. Corporations, sorry Mitt, are actually not "people." Instead, corporations are cold, calculating, machines, ever-focused on making ever more profits. Nothing wrong with long as we're willing to recognize it for what it is.

Jim Renacci, #1 With The NRA

By The Reverend Published: January 16, 2013

It turns out that a northeast Ohioan, U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci, was tied for first place in receipts from the nation's leading gun lobby, the National Rifle Association, in the November election cycle...... Renacci, a Republican from Wadsworth, got $9,900 from the NRA Political Victory Fund for his successful reelection effort.......The NRA gave $1,012,687. Eighty-seven percent went to Republicans.

Mr Renacci's take on guns, gun regulations, Sandy Hook and...yes...9-11....

Why Congress Sucks

By The Reverend Published: January 14, 2013

I see the NRA is promising that Congress will not pass a new assault weapons ban. The NRA should know. The NRA owns Congress. After all, the NRA has spent many, many millions to get to the place where they can state with confidence that they own the U.S. Congress (or enough of it), and that Congress won't be passing anything that the NRA doesn't want passed.

That describes America's form of governance perfectly. Huge corporate lobbying groups, in this case gun manufacturers, paying for the congressional representatives they want in Congress....and then, those congressional representatives doing the will of those corporate lobbying groups. Think of any industry....oil, banking, telco, agri-business, weapons always works the same way. We have the best Congress the top 1% can buy.

Notions Of Nullification

By The Reverend Published: January 12, 2013

I heard Sean Hannity yesterday afternoon explaining how states were probably going to have to disobey federal laws in a defiant demonstration of resistance to what Grandpa Ronnie labeled "Big Gub'mint."

I hate to keep bringing this uncivil and all....but it looks like talk of secession and nullification is all the rage in many 21st century confederacy states. The following sentiment from Oklahoma is typical.....

Fear Of Obama Dictatorship

By The Reverend Published: January 10, 2013

I can't stand the contradictions.....or, in blog words.....the stupid, it burns.

Yesterday, VP Joe Biden, in his role heading President Obama's gun violence commission, said this...."The president is going to act," said Biden, giving some comments to the press before a meeting with victims of gun violence. "There are executive orders, there's executive action that can be taken. We haven't decided what that is yet. But we're compiling it all with the help of the attorney general and the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action that we believe is required."

Media's Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy

By The Reverend Published: January 9, 2013

Corporate media exists today to shape and direct "news" narratives for the benefit of very wealthy and powerful business interests. If you have been under the impression that the job of corporate media.....big newspaper, big radio, big cable and big network to properly and truthfully inform the public about important news stories, then I would recommend getting out from underneath that impression. Because it's false.

Example: According to NOAA scientists, the average temperature for the contiguous U.S. for 2012 was 55.3°F, which was 3.2°F above the 20th century average and 1.0°F above the previous record from 1998.

The GOP & Immigration Reform

By The Reverend Published: January 8, 2013

Yes, I know....all the very Kewlest of Village Kewl Kidz are all aflutter over the Very Serious Uproar by Republicans over President Obama's pick of Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense. There is no there, here....and Hagel will be confirmed easily. Move along, cause there ain't nothing to talk about there....unless you are a writer for Kabuki Digest.

The GOP's play-acting over Hagel is for the purpose of changing the media narrative away from Speaker Boehner and his House Rowdies.....and the utter embarrassment they became in the national discussion over the bogusly-named "fiscal cliff" negotiations.

Do Tax Cuts Have To Be Paid For?

By The Reverend Published: January 7, 2013

2010...“My view, and I think most of the people in my party don’t believe that you should ever have to offset a tax cut,” Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl

“That’s been the majority Republican view for some time,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told TPMDC this afternoon after the weekly GOP press conference. “That there’s no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy. So I think what Senator Kyl was expressing was the view of virtually every Republican on that subject."

Fiscally Conservative?

By The Reverend Published: January 5, 2013

“It may be necessary to partially shut down the government in order to secure the long-term fiscal well being of our country, rather than plod along the path of Greece, Italy and Spain,” Cornyn wrote in a column published in the Houston Chronicle on Friday.

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., said today that Republicans should risk a temporary government shutdown to get spending cuts tied to the expiration of the U.S. government debt limit in February.

Opening Day Bunk

By The Reverend Published: January 4, 2013

Speaker of the House John Boehner shed a couple more tears yesterday as he addressed the opening session of the 113th Congress. The Ohioan talked about feeling "awestruck", he talked about "old truths". He spoke of "doing the right thing." He invoked "the assistance of our Heavenly Father", whoever that is, as he convened a new House session of our secular nation.

And then John Boehner lied....

Next Up: Gaming The Electoral College

By The Reverend Published: January 3, 2013

Republicans have had a hard time winning the presidency in the last 20 years. Five of the last six presidential elections have seen Republican candidates lose the popular vote. And, as I have mentioned before, with a Republican president and at least 34 Republican senators out of a total of 100, Republicans can have their way on just about everything.

The 34 or more senators is not a problem for the GOP, but winning the presidency is another story. What to do? Change the rules.

Chaos And Cunning

By The Reverend Published: January 2, 2013

You may or may not know by now that last night the House passed the Senate-negotiated bill to avoid the Village-manufactured "fiscal cliff" by a vote of 257-167. 151 House Republicans voted no along with 16 Democrats. Noteworthy is the fact that Speaker Boehner voted for the bill while Boehner's two lieutenants, Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy...voted against.

85 House Republicans voted to increase taxes. Those Republicans will never admit that they voted to increase taxes.....but that's what they did. In the Senate all but 5 Republicans voted for the bill. Republicans have now voted to increase tax rates for the first time since George H.W. Bush was president.

Cliff Deal Notes

By The Reverend Published: January 1, 2013

According to the NY Times, here's the deal the Senate approved last night by a vote of 89-8..... rates would jump to 39.6 percent from 35 percent for individual incomes over $400,000 and couples over $450,000, while tax deductions and credits would start phasing out on incomes as low as $250,000,......a full year’s extension of unemployment insurance without strings attached and without offsetting spending cuts, a $30 billion cost. But the two-percentage point cut to the payroll tax that the president secured in late 2010 lapsed at midnight and will not be renewed.
