John McCain: Still Fighting The Vietnam War

By The Reverend Published: April 30, 2013

In my opinion, it would be best if John McCain retired from the Senate. That way he could go to work full time for the Sunday teevee "news" shows. So far in 2013, McCain leads in number of appearances on Sunday shows with a total of 9 appearances. In 2012, McCain led all others in appearances with 20 sit downs, in 2011 he came in second to Michele Bachmann (?) with 19 appearances. If there is even the remotest of possibilities that the U.S. might be facing another conflict in yet another country....John McCain appears on the Sunday shows.

With all the deja-vu talk about whether Syrian leaders have ordered WMD to be used against their own people last week....it is no surprise that John McCain made yet another appearance on the Sunday shows to do what he always does when situations like Syria come up.....he wants the U.S. to intervene militarily....and here's one of his reasons why....

Obama, Other Presidents, Honor War Criminal

By The Reverend Published: April 27, 2013

I really can't express the awfulness of the Bush/Cheney presidency. For years I documented the atrocities of the George W. Bush administration. Bush was so hated when he left office, his approval ratings in the low 30's, that he has basically stayed hidden for the last 4+ years.....I guess, in the hope that people would forget about him.

At least that was the hope of the Republican Party. After January 20, 2009....the name of George W. Bush was rarely spoken by any Republican leader or conservative media spokesperson. That's how toxic Bush's presidency really was. Bush was not invited to campaign for prospective GOP candidates and made no appearances at Republican presidential nominating conventions in either 2008 or 2012. No one wanted to be associated with George W. Bush. Many in his own political party thought Bush had destroyed the GOP "brand."

Our Most Dangerous Threat......Unemployment

By The Reverend Published: April 26, 2013

Other than the 2010 GOP midterm election campaign talking point of "jobs, jobs, jobs", not one policy has been forwarded to increase employment. Other than the taunt directed towards President Obama by Speaker Boehner, "where are the jobs, Mr President?", the House that Boehner controls has not forwarded one piece of legislation which would create jobs.

Unemployment has been our nation's number one problem for over 4 years....and no one in the federal government is doing anything about it. The national unemployment rate is still 7.6%. Millions of Americans are still looking for jobs that simply do not exist.

Missouri & Concealed Carry

By The Reverend Published: April 25, 2013

I know several people who have concealed carry licenses. A few years back one of them told me about being pulled over by a policeman in a routine traffic stop. He wasn't upset that he had been pulled over. What upset him was that the police officer was aware before he approached the vehicle that my acquaintance had a concealed carry permit. The first question from the officer was 'where is it'?

The fact that law enforcement had access to concealed carry permit information really upset my friend. I mean, it really pissed him off. The fact that police knew who had concealed carry permits and who didn't was just a step too far according to my concealed carry acquaintance. Many highly descriptive and vulgar expletives deleted were uttered.

Max Baucus.....Case Study In Government Rot

By The Reverend Published: April 24, 2013

This blogger is very pleased to learn that Max Baucus, alleged Democratic senator from Montana will not seek another term. Baucus was the guy who spearheaded Obama's healthcare reform from the Senate side, making sure that insurers and big pharma profited handsomely from the neo-liberal legislation lovingly known as Obamacare.

But it's extra-special when the very person at the central interchange hub where Obamacare was constructed announces his retirement from the Senate after some 35 years and then goes on to call the law that he supervised to completion a "train wreck."

Ohio Republicans Happy To Punish Poor

By The Reverend Published: April 23, 2013

So, you're poor and you live in Ohio and you can't afford health insurance for your family. You earn more than the federal poverty level, so you don't qualify for Medicaid....but don't make enough to afford private health insurance.

You learn that within Obamacare, the national health insurance reform which John Boehner has declared is "now the law of the land".....qualifications for Medicaid have been adjusted to 138% of federal poverty levels....which is exactly where you and your family stand on the Ohio income ladder. For a family of four, 138% of the poverty level equals a family income of less than $31,809. For a single person, 138% of the poverty level equals a yearly income of $14,800.

Yes, America Tortured

By The Reverend Published: April 22, 2013

I remember the day George W. Bush, having already ordered torture tactics to be added to his "war on terror" as early as 2002, stood in front of teevee cameras and said..."We do not torture."  I knew at the time that W. was lying. In fact, he knew he was lying. American military, CIA and private defense contractors had been torturing detainees for over 3 years when Bush openly lied to Americans in 2005.

Now, in 2013, a new independent, nonpartisan study group called the Constitution Project, headed by Asa Hutchinson and James Jones, has concluded in it's 577 page report that....

The second Boston marathon bomber was taken into custody last night.  Nineteen year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, wounded in a gunfight with police Thursday night when his 26 year old brother, Tamerian, was killed, was found hiding in a boat in a Watertown, Massachusetts neighborhood.

The brothers are of Chechen heritage.....Dzhokbar became a U.S. citizen last year.

Chechnyan Brothers Are The Boston Bombers

By The Reverend Published: April 19, 2013

It appears that the search for the two men who conducted the Boston Marathon bombing is just about over. Last night in Watertown, Mass., two Chechnyan brothers, Tamerian Tsarnaev, 26, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, went on a violence-spree killing one MIT police officer, hijacking a car, holding the driver for 30 minutes before letting him go unharmed, throwing explosive devices from the car, and exchanging gunfire with police.

The elder brother, Tamerian, was killed in the violence last night but the younger brother is still at large this morning.....the younger man is the one in yesterday's released photo wearing the white baseball hat.

Senate, NRA Favor Criminals Purchasing Guns

By The Reverend Published: April 18, 2013

The Reverend, December 15, 2012....

"...we will do nothing at all in the wake of the slaughter of 20, five-to-six year old children. Just as we did nothing after a similar slaughter in a movie theater in Colorado. Just as we did nothing after the attempted assassination of a U.S. congresswoman in Arizona. We will do absolutely nothing."

The "Real Deal" On Immigration?

By The Reverend Published: April 17, 2013

After Republicans took a well deserved beating in last November's general election by appealing solely to white voters....an autopsy was performed on the cooling-body of the GOP corpse. Conservative experts in the field of interpreting the entrails of dead things concluded that rumors of the Party of Lincoln being pronounced dead as a doornail were oh-so-premature.

Out of that autopsy report, as told by the GOP Chairman and obvious Anagram Man, Reince Priebus, we learned that the GOP just needs to tweak a few rough spots in their messaging, draft better candidates and do something about the Latino vote....and then....winners.

Who Is Responsible?

By The Reverend Published: April 16, 2013

At this moment no one knows who is responsible for the bombings at the finish line of yesterday's Boston Marathon. The Rupert Murdoch-owned New York Post is reporting that....

Police took a 20-year-old Saudi national into custody near the scene of yesterday’s horrific Boston Marathon bomb attack, law-enforcement sources told The Post.

Whose Choice Should It Be?

By The Reverend Published: April 15, 2013

Those who consider themselves conservative and usually, if not always, vote Republican get upset when those critical of modern conservatism describe the right's policy positions on female reproductive rights as a "War on Women." That is completely understandable.

The "War on Women" talking point, which I have often used myself, rubs the right...um....the wrong way. Apologists on the right disavow that their political party's policies amount to an open and sustained attack on women. From the right's perspective I suppose I understand how that makes sense. Even though conservative policies and legislation single out contraception, Planned Parenthood, and a woman's legal right to choose....for a slow death.....over and over again, the conservatives who push such an agenda actually believe they are making the right choice, the moral choice, for women.

I searched the Web of Science, an online science publication tool, for peer-reviewed scientific articles published between January first 1991 and November 9th 2012 that have the keyword phrases “global warming” or “global climate change.” The search produced 13,950 articles.

Deficit Already Cut In Half

By The Reverend Published: April 12, 2013

While the posers, the grifters, the self-righteous, the liars, and the thieves in corporate media and D.C. politics have gone on endlessly about debt, deficits, Grand Bargains, fiscal cliffs, and the Holy Grail...a bipartisan agreement to "solve" something or other.....the national deficit has been cut in half. Shocked? Shouldn't be unless your sources for information are limited to corporate media.

Not A Dime's Worth Of Difference

By The Reverend Published: April 11, 2013

Yes, the socialist, collectivist, communist Kenyan Usurper has offered up Social Security to the Supply-Side Godz.  Although Social Security, by law, cannot add to the deficit, Obama doesn't care about any of that boring reality stuff. The president offered up cuts to Social Security as part of his newly released budget.....and the reason the White House gave for doing so.....was that the president is making a good-faith gesture to rascally Republicans opposed to compromise of any kind with a Democratic president.

Surely a Democratic presidential plan to cut Social Security benefits would break down Republican intransigence to compromise with the hated Usurper. I mean, right? Offer Republicans a budget with Republican priorities like "slashing entitlements", and Republicans will rush to strike a deal, finally convinced that Obama is Serious about doing something meaningful.

Prospects For Regulating Mass Murder Tools Bleak

By The Reverend Published: April 10, 2013

In the state of Yeehah yesterday, a 20 year old college student, Dylan Quick, went on a knifing spree at the Lone Star College campus in Cypress, northwest of Houston. Fourteen people were cut, two critically.....but as of this morning, no deaths.

Ask yourself.....if Mr. Quick had been brandishing an AR-15 or comparable, how many at that Texas Community College campus would be dead this morning?

Tax-Shifting To Reward Rich Unpopular

By The Reverend Published: April 9, 2013

Here in Ohio, GOP Governor Kasich is desperately seeking a path to reward the richest in the Buckeye State by cutting the state's income tax. One of the governor's plans is to spread the state's sales tax to services like hair salons, accountants, etc.....to make up for the loss in revenue by lowering the state income tax.

Kasich's plan is regressive and is intended to be. It's a state version of "broadening the base and lowering rates". Coming up with tax-shifting schemes to further burden the have-nots while bringing "freedom" to rich "job creators" has become a full time job for Republican leaders nationwide.

About That GOP "Fever"

By The Reverend Published: April 8, 2013

June 2012....

"I believe that If we're successful in this election, when we're successful in this election, that the fever may break, because there's a tradition in the Republican Party of more common sense than that. My hope, my expectation, is that after the election, now that it turns out that the goal of beating Obama doesn't make much sense because I'm not running again, that we can start getting some cooperation again," Obama said.

Obama Offers Up Skin Of Geezers

By The Reverend Published: April 6, 2013

In early January, 2009, before Barack Obama was inauguarated president, he fielded questions from ABC's George Stephanopoulos.....

I asked the president-elect, "At the end of the day, are you really talking about over the course of your presidency some kind of grand bargain? That you have tax reform, healthcare reform, entitlement reform including Social Security and Medicare, where everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good?"

Danger: Profit-Skimmers Ahead

By The Reverend Published: April 3, 2013

Eighteen Republican governors have taken advantage of the Obamacare loophole created by Chief Justice Roberts to opt out of expanding Medicaid health care coverage in their states. Roberts, the deciding vote to vindicate Obamacare as constitutional, had to throw a bone to conservative red states to make up for his egregious sin....and he did. Roberts gave leaders in each state the right to opt out of expanding Medicaid to citizens making up to 138% of the poverty rate.

States couldn't opt out of pre-Obamacare Medicaid....but because of Roberts, states can opt out of expanding Medicaid because......I guess, states rights. Although if that is the reason, states should be able to opt out of the entire Medicaid program because of.....states rights. Right?

Why The Opposition To Gay Marriage?

By The Reverend Published: April 2, 2013

Here's Duncan Black from the Eschaton blog asking why those opposed to gay marriage care so passionately about the issue....

I get why abortion opponents care about abortion. If you think something is murder, it makes sense to oppose it. But why do marriage equality opponents care about it? I mean, as with most subjects, you can have an opinion on something without caring much about it. Whatever you might think about it, however you might vote on it, how can so many people be involved in an anti-same sex marriage movement? It's so weird.

Whose Freedom?

By The Reverend Published: April 1, 2013

My blog friend Dave King has a post up detailing a libertarian think tank's recent study allegedly determining which state is the most "free." If you haven't read it yet, you should.

The "study" was done by the Mercatus Center, "a libertarian-oriented — and Koch brothers-affiliated — think tank based out of George Mason University.." Also noteworthy..."Charles Koch sits on its board, along with another high-ranking Koch Industries executive. Mercatus is effectively the in-house think tank for the Kochs, providing reports and research that support the ideological aims of the notorious brothers..."
