Angry, angry conservatives only want to talk about one subject this presidential campaign season....only one....the national economy during President Obama's 3 1/2 years in office. Despite the incontrovertible fact that over the last 2+ years our economy has begun to recover from the tragic national financial collapse caused by deregulating private sector banksters....Mitt Romney, all Republicans,....as well as all conservative media members...claim that Obama has been a total failure when it comes to economic matters.
Perspective is needed.
For the past 28 consecutive months, the private sector has hired between 3 and 4 million new employees. Corporate profits have remained strong, in some cases setting all time records. Unlike England, for example, the U.S. has not slipped back into recession. During that same period Republican governors and state legislatures have eliminated some 700,000 public sector employees. Normally, in less excitable times, those numbers would be celebrated by conservatives. Less government, a perennial Republican policy....even lower taxes, THE GOP policy, plus private sector job growth, also a perennial Republican policy.
But these are not normal times.
Despite the, again, incontrovertible fact, that President Obama has increased federal government growth by the lowest percentage since General Dwight Eisenhower sat in the White House.....Obama has been pilloried, non stop, for being a Big Government, Big Spending, High Taxing (take your pick)...socialist, communist, or anti-colonialist Kenyan.
While conservatives have been repeating these utterly false.....and goofy....accusations....the reality-based community has been busy describing Obama's actual center-right, pragmatic brand of governance. The 2009 stimulus worked but was too small, ObamaCare focused too much on the profits of Big Insurance and Big Pharma while totally rejecting any attempts to lower overall costs through Medicare-for-all, public insurance options, or discount rates for government bulk-Pharma purchasing.
Obamacare, Scalia's petulant bluster nonwithstanding, is, and always was, a right-of-center plan....originally introduced by the Heritage Foundation and originally tried in Massachusetts by the current GOP presidential candidate. A George W. Bush hand-picked Chief Justice ruled that the conservative Obamacare policy was constitutional.
During Obama's first term, taxes have been reduced, not increased. Income, capital gains and dividend tax rates have remained where they were under the Republican Bush administration and payroll tax rates have been reduced by 2%. Not exactly Big Government socialism.
Defense spending has remained in it's Bush-inflated, bloated state. Obama has extended the Orwellian "war on terror" policies begun under the Bush-Cheney Reign of Terror. Indeed, Obama has expanded the neo-conservative wet dream of the unitary executive......now with new and improved unitary assassination powers and unilateral drone striking in four different middle eastern region countries. Obama ordered the successful execution of Osama Bin Ladin.
If any GOP president would have done as much, especially after being handed such a pile of rubble from the previous administration.....he/she would have been touted as the 2nd coming of St. Ronnie, himself. But alas.....the president sitting in the White House is a Democrat.....and ipso facto....an enemy of America, the worst president ever, a non-citizen foreigner, a wimpy apologizer, and a secretive-socialist intent on bringing America to it's knees.
The long and short of it is that conservative voters this fall will be deciding who to vote for for president with only a phony characterization of Obama to guide them. Oddly, the time we're living in is also called The Information Age.
Distilling further.....the facts of Obama's presidency, what has actually happened as opposed to the faith-based versions of what has happened, don't matter to the members of today's conservative movement. Why talk about, why deal with, reality, when make-believe, falsehoods and deception keep your base voters energized?
What all of this illustrates is how far today's Republican party and it's supporters have moved to the extreme right. What would have been reasons to sculpt a new face on Mt. Rushmore if a Republican president had accomplished what Obama has accomplished.....has been turned on it's head and rendered treasonous because Obama is a Democrat.
Yes, there will always be partisan politics. No one argues otherwise. But that's not what we have been experiencing the last number of years. These are not normal times. Half of the country, apparently, now believe in political fairy tales as told to them by their bedtime story media-tellers. Nearly half of the nation's voters plan to vote against the center-right President Obama because they have been told nothing but lies for the last 3+ years. Lies many conservatives were eager to believe in even before Obama took office.
No, these are not normal political times we're living in. It's yet to be seen whether our great nation can survive the neo-threat from conservative extremists. Too difficult to predict.
What I do know, however, is that nothing good can be accomplished nationally when almost half of all voters insist on bitterly clinging to their imaginative fables and myths instead of seeking out and embracing reality.
