Village Governor and progressive-pretender, Ed Rendell, had a chat the other day with NBC's Chuck Todd over seemingly wide spread opposition to Obamacare. Rendell suggested the opposition was being caused by misinformation about the ACA. Misinformation coming exclusively from Republicans.
Chuck Todd must have experienced a guilty conscience after Rendell said that...so he proceeded to say this....
“But more importantly, it would be stuff that Republicans have successfully messaged against it,” Todd told Rendell. “They don’t repeat the other stuff because they haven’t even heard the Democratic message. What I always love is people say, ‘Well, it’s you folks’ fault in the media.’ No, it’s the President of the United States’ fault for not selling it.”
Todd's response is familiar....here's David Gregory responding to accusations by former Bushie Scott McClelland that the press didn't do it's job leading up to the kickoff of George and Dick's Excellent Iraq Adventure......
"I think there are a lot of critics who think that . . . . if we did not stand up and say this is bogus, and you’re a liar, and why are you doing this, that we didn’t do our job. I respectfully disagree. It’s not our role."
If media's job is not to explain to the public who is telling the truth about any given subject, say, like, WMD in Iraq, or Palinesque "death panels", or the historic and unprecedented nature of Republican obstructionism.....then, what is the "role" of alleged journalists?
I think Chuck Todd had the answer. You see, if Republicans have "messaged" falsehoods about Obamacare through the repetition of lies about the bill.....and biased-conservative voters accept those lies and believe them....then Republicans have done their job of "messaging" "successfully." The job of media members in this situation is to explain how unified and consistent Republican messaging on Obamacare has been and then share polling which indicates a significant portion of the interested public agrees with the bogus and deceptive messaging.
This media dynamic I call "normalizing lying." Republicans lie, Republican voters accept and embrace the lies.....media anchors "report" on how "successful" Republicans are getting their "message" out. Rinse...repeat.
"They don’t repeat the other stuff because they haven’t even heard the Democratic message."
The "they" in that sentence could refer to media or Republicans in context....but I think Todd was thinking of....journalists. You see, the job of journalists in our Age of Failure is to "repeat" the stuff politicians say. Republicans message, Democrats message.....journalists "repeat" that messaging. Similar to the work of dictation-taking secretaries and the like.
Todd claims that journalists haven't ever heard the Democratic messaging on Obamacare......therefore journalists can't "repeat" anything from Democrats defending against Republican-messaging lies. That seems, I don't know, wrong. somehow, doesn't it?
The question then becomes.....is it the role of media to report on the details of passed legislation? Do you think that Todd and Gregory have the ability to use the Google? If they do....then why is it not part of their role to explain the details of a passed law? Further, what's more vitally important to citizens.....hearing about political "messaging", much of which is misleading and untruthful.....or, learning about the details of passed legislation and how those details will affect their lives?
Todd says he can't do the latter because he, and his Very Serious colleagues, "haven't even heard the Democratic message." Hate to bring it up.....but passing the ACA WAS and IS the Democratic "message." If Chuck Todd doesn't know what is contained in the ACA....whose fault would that be? Democrats? If Chuck Todd DOES know what's in the ACA.....then why does he have to wait to hear Democatic "messaging" before he can entertain the notion that Republicans are lying about Obamacare?
Let's say Republicans really got their freak on and "messaged" that President Obama was regularly dining on the flesh of two year olds. And the "messaging", along Todd's line of thinking, was wildly "successful".....meaning that conservatives and Republicans embraced the new "message." Fox, ABC, CNN and all the Republicans appearing on those networks amplify and repeat that GOP "message" for weeks and months, you know, like Benghazi.
But because of the unserious nature of this GOP "message", Democrats simply ignore such nonsense and see no need to respond with a "message" of their own. Would Chuck Todd claim that it simply was not his job to correct the lies of Republicans.....leaving the answer to whether or not Republicans are lying about Obama dining on two year olds....unresolved?
And....would Chuck Todd's First Read headline go like this.....
"Obama fails to respond to accusations by Republicans that he dines on two year olds, raising further doubts over Democratic messaging failures."
