No Country For Old Liberals

By The Reverend Published: October 31, 2013

The Affordable Care Act has progressive elements contained within it.....Medicaid expansion, government subsidies for insurance exchange enrollees, new rules for insurance company outlays on actual health care delivered to customers....but the ACA should never be confused with a liberal program. Because it isn't.

A liberal program would be single payer, Medicare for all. Full stop.

GOP Losing War On Women

By The Reverend Published: October 30, 2013

Conservatives and Republicans object to all charges that they've been conducting a war on women. They would object, now wouldn't they? No one, and especially not a desperate vote-seeking political party, would own up to singling out one major demographic group for real-life harassment or punishment...it simply wouldn't be prudent.

But it doesn't matter what Republicans object to...not really. In the U.S. (at least for now), we have these things called Courts and Judges and these other things we call Elections. According to those things...Republicans are, indeed, fighting a war of unnecessary harassment, humiliation and punishment against women.

Speaking Loudly Yet Remaining Silent

By The Reverend Published: October 29, 2013

The New Confederacy General, Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, is leading yet another coup attempt against our democracy. This time, Renegade Teddy has girded his loins for a fight to protect the True Americans of our nation.....the very rich....

Last week, Mr. Cruz blocked the Senate from considering the nomination of Tom Wheeler to lead the commission (Federal Communications Commission) — a candidate who leaders from both parties had agreed would be put up for a vote without delay.

Hoovering All Over The World

By The Reverend Published: October 28, 2013

When newly elected Barack Obama announced he would prefer to "look forward, not backward" in light of the numerous illegalities and war crimes perpetrated by the Bush administration, I wrote at the time that the danger in doing so would mean that new national rule-of-law precedents would be set that would be difficult, or impossible, to reverse later.

I think that my warning years ago seems to have been accurate in light of what Edward Snowden has revealed to the world this year. Yes, the Bush administration, using 9-11 as cover, constructed a secretive and highly illegal communications dragnet system which we now know has fully eviscerated all fourth amendment rights to privacy.

Mainstreaming The Crazy

By The Reverend Published: October 26, 2013

The United States has always had it's fringe political movements and groups. It's the cost of freedom, especially first amendment freedom......and I don't ever want that paradigm changed. The more free speech, the better, as I see it.

So don't mistake what I'm about to argue next.

Messing With The Sequester

By The Reverend Published: October 25, 2013

March, 2013....

Rep. Steve Scalise, chairman of the Republican Study Committee, claims that the onset of (sequester) cuts will be a “big victory” for “conservative principles.” Boehner aides appear to agree:

Republican aides say privately that Mr. Boehner sees no need to negotiate; Republicans are in a good place, they argue, because they want spending cuts and those cuts are happening.

Why So Hysterical?

By The Reverend Published: October 24, 2013

These are the types of hysterical statements we've become accustomed to hearing from Republicans over the Affordable Care Act (ACA)....

"....Obamacare is already destroying job creation, it's already hurting our economy," (Rep. Paul) Broun (R-GA) insisted. "It's already destroying jobs, it's going to destroy our liberty, it's going to destroy everything."

"It's going to push us into a total economic collapse of America. And that's exactly what I mean by it's going to destroy America."

Syrian Chemical Weapon Destruction Near Completion

By The Reverend Published: October 23, 2013

I heard Big Blow on Morning Blow yesterday mention something derogatory about President Obama and Syria. The topic wasn't Syria, of course, the topic was the massive, huge, terrible, awful, bad, irresponsible, unaccountable and nation-destroying FAILURE of the ACA exchanges.

The exchanges are not failing because over a half a million Americans have registered already and many states who set up their own state exchanges are experiencing robust signups....like Kentucky. Kentucky is signing up 1000 people a day.....yes, per day. The implementation of the exchanges will iron itself out in the same way that George W. Bush's failed launch of Medicare Plan D was corrected.

Buckeye Institute Will Sue Gov. Kasich Over Medicaid Expansion

By The Reverend Published: October 22, 2013

I applaud Ohio Governor John Kasich's stick-to-it-ness in implementing the Medicaid expansion portion of the Affordable Care Act despite efforts by state Republicans to stop him from doing so. It is the right thing to do.....and Kasich has figured out a way to do it.

This NY Times piece explains the steps Kasich took to implement Medicaid expansion in the Buckeye state.

Disgustingly Rich

By The Reverend Published: October 20, 2013

I chuckle every time I hear it. And I hear it a lot now.

Fresh off an overdue and well deserved national beat down in the latest national hostage taking crisis, many usual-suspect conservatives promptly looked to change the subject. By next week, the face-smashing defeat delivered to the GOP by the dreaded Obama in the debt ceiling crisis will have never happened. Similar to George W. Bush's presidency.

The South Rises Again: Rejecting Medicaid Expansion

By The Reverend Published: October 19, 2013

The progressive portion of Obamacare is the Medicaid expansion provision. Medicaid is government healthcare for the poorest Americans. Individual states set income limits to qualify for the Medicaid program. It should come as no surprise that southern, red states have the stingiest limits....

Two parents and a child living in Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana or Texas with an income of $4,850 a year actually earn too much to qualify for traditional Medicaid. And if you're not a parent, then things are even worse. In most states, if you have no children, you can't qualify for Medicaid no matter how little you make. In most states, even if you make no money at all, there's no Medicaid for you.

Of Managing Banana Stands

By The Reverend Published: October 18, 2013

However you slice and dice the history, the strategery, and the underlying issues, the decision to live with a government shutdown for an extended period of time — inflicting modest-but-real harm on the economy, needlessly disrupting the lives and paychecks of many thousands of hardworking people, and further tarnishing the Republican Party’s already not-exactly-shiny image — in pursuit of obviously, obviously unattainable goals was not a normal political blunder by a normally-functioning political party. It was an irresponsible, dysfunctional and deeply pointless act, carried out by a party that on the evidence of the last few weeks shouldn’t be trusted with the management of a banana stand, let alone the House of Representatives.

Sounds very partisan, no? It seems obvious that the author is a "leftist" attempting to pour salt in the wounds of the already-humiliated Republican Party, right?

So, That Happened

By The Reverend Published: October 17, 2013

In the end, what The Reverend predicted would happen...happened.

After the Senate voted yesterday 81-18 to pass a, basically, clean continuing resolution and a clean debt ceiling increase.....Speaker Boehner allowed the clean Senate bill to be voted upon in the House....(until last night something Boehner said he would not do)....and the bill passed 285-144. All 144 of the no votes were from Republicans, including my representative, Jim Renacci.

Make-Believe Caucus Threatens GOP Surrender Caucus

By The Reverend Published: October 15, 2013

*By the looks of yesterday's comment thread.....it would seem that I struck a few nerves by daring to mention veterans being exploited by Tea Party darlings. If you took offense or the post made you see red.....come back tomorrow, I'm planning on responding to all legitimate objections/complaints. Personal satisfaction, however, is never guaranteed. The Rev

The NYTimes reports that the Senate has reached a deal to avoid a national default and reopen the federal government. Color me unimpressed. The deal from the Senate is so short term that it all but guarantees another shutdown and/or default crisis before Valentine's Day. According to the NYT, senators are willing to reopen government until January 15th and raise the debt ceiling to accommodate bill paying until February 7th.

Huge Crowd of 200 Show Up For 'Million Veterans March'

By The Reverend Published: October 14, 2013

When the Tea Party first crossed my blog screen back in 2009, less than four months after the historic election of our nation's first black president, I suggested that the one defining characteristic of the oddly dressed protest group was "incoherence." The newly elected Barack Obama had been president for all of six weeks, and already, listening to Teas, he had destroyed the nation. That seemed....odd...to me.

The Taxed Enough Already signs proliferated at Tea gatherings...and yet, at the time, federal tax rates were at their lowest level in some 60 years. When asked what it was that they were protesting.....the answer usually came back with a variation of the same theme....Teas were taking their country back.

The Value Of Hate

By The Reverend Published: October 13, 2013

The same folks responsible for closing government and threatening to destroy the world economy by defaulting on the U.S. debt gathered this weekend for a....wait for it.....Values Voters Summit. Unsurprisingly, when the straw poll for a 2016 Values Voters presidential candidate was taken....Senator Ted Cruz, the man most responsible for leading the Tea Party attack on the U.S. federal government, won overwhelmingly.

After observing many years of the Values Voters shindigs, and because of my Reverend background, I think this observation comes closest to my take.....

Kinder, Gentler Ransom Demands

By The Reverend Published: October 12, 2013

The terrorist event still threatening the entire nation began on October 1st when sleeper cells in the House of Representatives rejected funding non-essential government services any longer unless Obamacare was entirely defunded.

Members of those sleeper cells then proceeded to stage theatrical productions in front of government locations that they, themselves, were responsible for closing. Predictably, team leaders of those sleeper cells paraded in front of Village teevee cameras loudly blaming Obama for closing non-essential federal government services and departments.....when it was their very own ransom demands which made the shutdown inevitable.

"What Republicans Are Doing....Is Wrong"

By The Reverend Published: October 11, 2013

“The approval rating of the Republicans is 28 percent, an all-time low since Gallup has been taking polls. It’s crazy,” McCain said. “I do worry about the Republican party. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen Republican senators running ads, raising money that is used to attack other incumbent Republican senators. I’ve never seen that in my life. It’s terribly wrong.”

Here's another sign from yesterday that Johnny Mac is right to be concerned about his political party.....

Just. Say. No.

By The Reverend Published: October 10, 2013

If I say today is Thursday and you also agree it is Thursday.....should both of us sit down to "negotiate" over whether, indeed, it's Thursday? And if we did.....what effing sense would that make? I'll leave it to you to do the translation.

On Tuesday, President Obama revealed once again his terrible addiction problem. Obama is addicted to the IDEA of bipartisan Kumbayah-ism. Instead of limiting his offer to anarchist House Republicans to what both sides already agree on.....the debt ceiling must be raised....the President fell off his 12 step program and extended an olive branch to our nation's most dangerous domestic enemies.....

Don't Lend Money To These Guys

By The Reverend Published: October 9, 2013

Does Rand Paul have a viable solution?

“It really is irresponsible of the president to try to scare the markets,” said Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky. “If you don’t raise your debt ceiling, all you’re saying is, ‘We’re going to be balancing our budget.’ So if you put it in those terms, all these scary terms of, ‘Oh my goodness, the world’s going to end’ — if we balance the budget, the world’s going to end? Why don’t we spend what comes in?”

When Is 18% A Majority?

By The Reverend Published: October 8, 2013

80 members of the House's Republican Tea Party Caucus sent a letter to Speaker Boehner on August 21. The letter encouraged Boehner and Cantor to refuse to pass a clean continuing resolution funding the government unless Obamacare was defunded also.

Those 80 House GOP'ers are known as the "suicide caucus" in the progressive blogosphere. Uncivil, I know....but very accurate.

The Really Bad News

By The Reverend Published: October 3, 2013

For the second time in the last two years, the nation finds itself nearing an easily avoidable, self-inflicted economic catastrophe. Many observers are pooh-poohing the prospects of an actual credit default.....surmising that Serious Politicians, as they did in August of 2011, will agree on some last-second "compromise" deal to avert a national financial meltdown.

But, maybe....as this Politico piece suggests........there's a Grand Bargain that can be agreed to in order to avoid a market collapse, a run on bank deposits, massive new unemployment and the dust-bowl depression misery which surely would follow.

"Suicide Lemmings" Strike Homeland

By The Reverend Published: October 1, 2013

17 years ago when the last Democratic President sat in the Oval Office, anti-democratic Republicans, led by Leroy Gingrich, shut down the funding of the federal government for about three weeks. The tantrum topic then was over cutting government spending.

Two years later with the deficit approaching zero and an economy booming....House Republicans brought impeachment articles against Bill Clinton. Three years after that, the Supreme Court's 2000 candidate, George W. Bush, in his first request, asked a GOP rubber stamp Congress to pass "tax reform" ostensibly redistributing Clinton's savings to America's richest......redistributed "savings" which had to be borrowed before the year 2001 ended....thus, once more, ballooning the debt. The same debt Gingrich Republicans bitched about so much when shutting down government in 1995.
