Conservatives and Republicans insist that they have not been conducting a political
"war on women."
Virginia GOP Governor Bob McDonnell put it this way last March...."This 'war on women' argument is very unfortunate," he told John King. "It's false, and it's been the political theater for the Democrats for the past couple of months."
GOP'er and losing VP candidate, Paul Ryan, simply mocked the whole idea that there was a war being waged against women's reproductive freedoms....“Now it’s a war on women; tomorrow it’s going to be a war on left-handed Irishmen or something like that,” Ryan told the crowd of donors, according to Shushanna Walshe of ABC News.
In 2011 alone, Republican-controlled state legislatures and governors passed into law 92 bills restricting a woman's access to abortion services. Not 92 bills waging war against left handed Irishmen, not 92 pieces of legislation meant as "political theater"......no, no....92 literal bills restricting the literal freedom of women to access legal abortion services.
I raise this topic today because this week Ohio Republicans voted out of committee, on an 11-9 partisan-line vote....a bill to deny $1.7 million in federal funding to Planned Parenthood.
The Health Committee of the Ohio House of Representatives advanced a bill on Wednesday that could strip $1.7 million in federal funding from Planned Parenthood. All 11 Republicans on the committee voted in favor of the bill, and all nine Democrats opposed.
The reason Republicans give for such an attack on reproductive age Ohio women?
House Bill 298 would create a priority list for federal family planning funds and place Planned Parenthood at the bottom. The bill's supporters argued at a hearing on Wednesday that its purpose is to improve health care in rural areas.
Post-2012-election.....the Republican war on women continues unabated. Ohio Republicans continue to embarrass Ohioans....and themselves....with these ugly, targeted attacks against half the state's population.
Abortion is still legal in all 50 states......and although Ohio Republicans state that their new bill to defund Planned Parenthood is "to improve health care in rural areas".....the truth is that Ohio Republicans, like many other Republican leaders in other GOP states who are seeking to defund Planned Parenthood.....the real GOP imperative, is to limit a woman's right to an abortion.
But, Planned Parenthood offers patients much more than abortion services, and as FactCheck.org stated....Abortions represent 3 percent of total services provided by Planned Parenthood, and roughly 10 percent of its clients received an abortion. The group does receive federal funding, but the money cannot be used for abortions by law.
Contraception, referrals for mammograms and other cancer preventive services, sex education and sexuality information, and STD testing are all part of the many reproductive services provided by Planned Parenthood.....but because 3% of Planned Parenthood's services are for abortion...Republicans in Ohio want to bankrupt the valuable and needed services provider.
Republican women are free to not use contraception if they so desire. Republican women can choose to not take advantage of Planned Parenthood's cancer screening services and STD testings. Republican and conservative anti-choice women do not ever have to choose an abortion....but to Ohio Republicans, that's not good enough.
For Ohio Republicans, no woman should have choices like Ohio anti-choice women currently have. Removing the legal choices offered to Ohio women at Planned Parenthood by defunding the group is without doubt another volley against women and their autonomy ....and can only be interpreted as part of the GOP's ongoing....yes..."war on women."
If Republicans and conservatives want to change the law of the land, waging a state by state war against female citizens of those states, removing the choices women currently have in those states, defunding Planned Parenthood state by state, is not the way to go about it. Those efforts are received by women in those states as attempts to control their lives, attempts to take their legal rights away. Put all those "defund PP" states together.....and voila!.....there's your War on Women.
The proper way for anti-choicers to change the status quo is to elect enough anti-choice U.S. representatives, senators....and a president who will appoint Supreme Court Justices who will overturn Roe. That's how our democratic republic functions.
But barring that.....Ohio's conservatives, Ohio's anti-choicers, Ohio's soldiers in a national anti-choice war against women's rights.....need to simply leave women alone.
