On Being Reasonable

By The Reverend Published: July 27, 2011

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) is the guy I told you about months ago who believes that child labor laws are unconstitutional. Apparently, if businesses cannot exploit minor children in the workplace, you know, for profits....then we have given up our freedoms. Guys like Mike Lee and Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) were swept into office last November riding the nation-destroying wave better known as the Tea Party.

Here's Mike Lee on Monday telling Chris Matthews what he expects from a Democratically controlled Senate...

CHRIS MATTHEWS: How many days do you think we have, on the outside, to get this debt ceiling through before we have a problem? How many days?

LEE: I don’t know, maybe ten days.

MATTHEWS: Okay, in ten days you want to change the United States Constitution by two-thirds vote in both houses? That’s what you’re demanding.

LEE: Yes. If possible we can’t change the Constitution just in Congress but we can submit it to the states. Let the states fight it out.

MATTHEWS: And you think you’re being reasonable by saying you want a two-thirds vote in the House, which is Republican, and in the Senate which is Democrat. You want the Democratic Senate, by a two-thirds vote, to pass a constitutional amendment or you want the house to come down?

LEE: Yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying and I’ve been saying this for six months.

What I could never quite grasp after the midterms was why it was that Tea Party Republicans thought American voters had given 20% of the House of Representatives the supreme power in the land. It was a "clear mandate", we were continually told by the Know-Nothings and their supporters. In an extremely low-turnout midterm election, a Tea Party secessionist win in the House...somehow....was translated as some constitutional change to our government's balance of power.

The Know Nothings did not recapture power in the Senate....primarily because the secessionists ran extra-dinghy TP candidates in places like Nevada and Alaska.....and, of course, our Democratic president didn't surrender his presidency last November just because Republicans retook the House.

But guys like Mike Lee, I guess, think that one low turnout midterm election was, in actuality, a mandate to rewrite much of the Constitution. Gives a whole new meaning to the adage...'give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile', no?

No matter, there was Know-Nothing Tea Party Senator Mike Lee telling Hardball viewers that yes, because his ahistorical protest movement now controlled 20% of the House....he believed that a majority Democratic Senate should immediately, and without much discussion or fanfare, pass a Constitutional amendment to balance the budget...and do it in only 10 days. That's what Mike Lee admits "he's been saying" for 6 months. And he thinks his expectations are "reasonable."

Barring a total rejection by the voters in 2012, therein lies the problem our nation will face moving forward. Know-Nothing Tea Party elected officials actually think they are being "reasonable" when they call for constitutional amendments at the drop of a TeaBag. The secessionist group thinks that doing away with child labor laws, unemployment insurance and portions of the Civil Rights Act is "reasonable." They think that overturning the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to any person born on U.S. soil, is part of a "reasonable" method of dealing with U.S. immigration.

If Partiers have trouble retaking the Senate, as was the case last November, then the "reasonable" thing to do is to abolish the democratic right of state voters to vote for those senators, and instead give partisan state legislatures that selection right. All the secessionist movement has to do is abolish the 17th amendment to accomplish that partisan goal. That's considered "reasonable."

Presently, according to Lee and his cohorts, it would be perfectly "reasonable" for a Democratic Senate to pass by a 2/3rds vote an amendment to the Constitution which would handcuff future governments by prohibiting them from raising spending when spending needs raised....and do it all in under ten days....with the full expectation that a Democratic president would sign it.

Lee says that's "reasonable." Of course, he doesn't believe what he is saying....after all, he isn't certifiable, at least not that I know of....but it's Mike Lee's way of reinforcing Tea Party secessionist aspirations of "taking their country back" by destroying it and starting over. You know, in a "reasonable" way.

There is nothing reasonable about America's new enemy...the Tea Party secessionists. They are an unhinged movement bent on destroying everything America ever stood for. They have rejected the basic principle of the common good and are using threats of constitutional change and economic default to reach their minority goals. They have already struck a damaging blow to average working families with their union busting thuggery....and now they are trying to leverage their 20% House "mandate" in an effort to further damage the national economy with inexcusable spending cuts in order to knock Obama off next November.

All of this has been clear for over 2 years....clear and reasonable.
