Our Gun-Filled Future

By The Reverend Published: April 27, 2014

As more states pass laws to increase the proliferation of guns in society, society will change.....and not for the better. Instead of more guns in more places bringing the safety so many enthusiasts say it will.....more guns in more places will only lead to a more fearful society, less willing to participate in social events and public activities.

A Georgia man panicked parents and children at a local park and baseball field by randomly walking around and displaying his gun to anyone he encountered in the parking lot.

According to witnesses who spoke with WSB-TV, the man wandered around the Forsythe County park last Tuesday night showing his gun to strangers, telling them “there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Flaunting the fact that Georgia Republicans just passed their new state's "guns everywhere" law, this Georgia gun toter sought to rub his new found freedom in the faces of public park goers who were properly scared out of their wits....

Karen Rabb said that the man’s intimidating behavior panicked parents causing them to hustle children who were there to play baseball to safety after the man refused to leave.

“It got to the point where we took the kids and brought them into the dugout and the parents lined up in front of the dugout,” Rabb said.

Quite a future gun advocates have in store for everyone, isn't it?

I've often mentioned this....but it bears repeating.....if average non-gun-enthusiast citizens come to realize that one third or one half of all the people they will come in contact with at their local grocer or eatery are carrying guns.....will those average shoppers think twice about going to those places?

How about parks and community centers? Do you think the reality of more guns in more places will be more or less likely to deter people from visiting those places?

From the beginning of our latest gun-surging, so to speak, I have had this nagging feeling that that is the purpose of all the new gun proliferation. To intimidate. To create fear. Sure, an armed society may be a more polite society....but that politeness is caused by fear....not freedom.

Now, genuine gun advocates will explain that this Georgia man is a dunce who acted irresponsibly by walking around at a baseball park flashing his handgun in the faces of everyone he sought to intimidate. But when the law is on your side, it doesn't much matter, now does it?

Police report they received 22 calls to 911 reporting the man.

After deputies arrived, they questioned the man who produced a permit for the handgun. According to authorities, since the man made no verbal threats or gestures, they couldn’t arrest him or ask him to leave.

Forsythe Sheriff Duane Piper said that he didn’t believe the parents and children were in any danger but, even though the man was within his rights to carry the gun, he found the gun carriers conduct inappropriate.

"within his rights"......we'll hear a lot more usage of that phrase in the future. What about the scared-out-of-their-minds baseball park attendees? What about their rights to not be terrorized, intimidated and made fearful for their family members' well-being?

Conservatives defend their 2nd amendment rights. But conservatives also favor a robust 'government-free' private economy as well. I can't even tell you how many times just this last week I've heard conservatives repeat the phrase "free market principles."

When more and more Americans refuse to participate in the marketplace because they have become properly intimidated, as gun-enthusiasts would have it, how can any economy prosper and grow?

Finally, the randomness argument. Numbers don't lie. With more guns in public places.....there will be more gun "incidents" in public places. That has already been proven to be the case with households who have guns. As more "random" gun "incidents" occur....as they surely will....even more people will be intimidated and scared to participate in the market place where gun carrying is normalized.....changing not only our economy but also our society....permanently.
