Food stamp benefits were reduced the first of this month by $36 per month for a family of four. Not because families don't need the extra food money anymore, but because conservative politicians have more concern over national debt and deficits than they do hungry U.S. families....or at least, that's what those conservative politicians say by their actions.
The reduction came as a provision of Obama's 2009 stimulus bill expired. Because conservative politicians are more concerned about percentage debt-to-GDP ratios than hungry people, those politicians refused to renew the food stamp provision. Nothing says Happy Holidays quite like taking food away from poor families just as the holiday season kicks off.
Those conservative politicians are now preparing a special Christmas stocking for the same poor, hungry families who just saw their food assistance reduced. Conservative politicians, and their apologists and media defenders, seem to have caught the spirit of Christmas this year like at no other time in recent memory.....
A Republican plan to cut about $40 billion in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program over 10 years in the farm bill would kick 3.8 million people off SNAP rolls, simultaneously denying free school lunches to 210,000 needy students every year, concludes the administration in its 11-page paper, released Tuesday.
It's important to note at this juncture that the Wall Street stock indexes.....the DOW and the S&P....have set all time highs this month....the same month food stamps have been reduced for 47 million poor Americans. Those indexes are said to be a sign of national economic health and vitality. Readers will have to sort out the irony for themselves.
Record stock index numbers, record poverty numbers......proving, yet again, that our nation's 30 year long experiment with conservative trickle-down economics (tax cuts and windfalls for the rich.....trickle down "lifting all boats", so to speak) has been one huge, cruel hoax.
“Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world,” Francis wrote in the papal statement. “This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.”
“Meanwhile,” he added, “the excluded are still waiting.”
Like the American poor and unemployed who are "still waiting" for those record stock indexes to translate to an improved economy for all. Waiting, while conservative trickle downers plan to take even more food off the tables of the have-nots.
Many decisions and actions by politicians can be overlooked as posturing and positioning. But what more-conservative politicians are doing in cutting food stamps right now.....can't be overlooked. It is shameless. It is evil. It is unforgivable.
And speaking of irony.....and unforgivable.....
A provision in the House-version of the farm bill that would give states the option to require food stamp recipients to be drug tested is garnering renewed attention after a congressman who voted in favor of it pleaded guilty to cocaine possession charges.
(GOP) Rep. Trey Radel voted in favor of the final version of the House farm bill that included the amendment offered by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) weeks before Radel was arrested in Washington, D.C.’s Dupont Circle neighborhood as part of a drug sting operation. The amendment originally passed by a voice vote in the House, despite Democratic opposition.
Hard to make shite like that up. But there it is.
From the moment the conservative House of Representatives passed the Ryan Budget, it was clear to me that today's conservative movement had reached a point which could only be described as shameless. Beyond shame.
With the recent food stamp rollback and with the House plan to punish the American poor even more in the new year.....at a time when the tiny investor class is having difficulty counting their new found wealth.......it can accurately be said that today's Republicans, today's conservative leaders, have lost their capacity to feel shame.
And so, we begin our extra-special, 2013 Season of Shame by taking food off the tables of our nation's most vulnerable people.....with further plans to take even more.
While the very rich few will be gathering around their Christmas money trees this year, toasting their record stock values and record dividend checks (all at 15% tax liability, dontchaknow).....the not-so-rich will be scrambling to find enough food to make Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner for their families.
Finally....it has been suggested that American families at dinner tables this holiday season should discuss healthcare and Obamacare. I disagee.
What Americans should be discussing at holiday tables this year is the shamelessness of our conservative leaders in taking food from our nation's poorest.
*Having a dozen people to the World Headquarters tomorrow for dinner.....will be gone over the weekend. Hope you and yours have a great Thanksgiving....and as always, thanks for reading.
