I've never really understood the right making such a big deal about poor people not paying any income tax. I suppose this has happened because President Obama has been demanding a higher income tax rate on the top 2% of earners.
Conservatism is nothing at all if it isn't a servant of the rich and powerful. To counter any attempts to raise income tax rates on millionaires and billionaires by some 3 1/2%.....I suppose conservatives felt that it was necessary to bash the working poor as freeloaders.
Even though many poor working families pay plenty in FICA withholding, sales taxes and property taxes.....poorer working families simply do not earn enough money to meet the threshold for paying federal income tax. That is a sad commentary coming from the richest nation in world history.....but it should not be an opportunity to bash the working poor as "dependent on government" or accuse the working poor of being people who simply refuse to take "personal responsibility."
The crazy looking woman who ran in the GOP primaries, Michele Bachmann, famously said that each poor working family should at least be made to pay $10 in income taxes each year. All while the political party she represents works feverishly to lower taxes by an additional 20% on extremely rich Americans who already have been enjoying the lowest income tax rates this nation has seen in 50 years.
Yesterday, David Corn and Mother Jones released video from May of a Mitt Romney fundraiser with well heeled donors. During Mitt's presentation he was recorded saying this...
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax."....
"[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
You see Mitt can't talk that way in front of the national teevee cameras. The self-righteousness is too stifling. His bitterness towards the American poor, palpable. But in front of obscenely rich political donors who will do virtually anything to keep their tax rates from going up.....Mitt felt free to kick out all the jams and explain that half of the United States voting population ain't worth a good goddamn.
So much for the GOP candidate being a president of all the American people. "My job is not to worry about.....those people." His job as a candidate is not to worry about the 47% of the American electorate who will vote for Obama.
This is the same guy who was born into wealth and access, the same man who "saved" the winter Olympic games by depending on government monies, the same guy who earned $20+ million in 2010 and paid a lower federal tax rate than a plumber, the same guy who stated that $374,000 was "not much money"....this same guy had the clueless audacity to tell fat cat donors that HE, Mitt Romney, in all his unself-awareness, narcissism and self righteousness....could "never convince them (poor working families)" that "they should take personal responsibility...for their lives."
Mitt represents everything that's wrong in America today. Born with a silver spoon firmly planted in his mouth, he earned his money by skimming, leeching, off of companies he did not create. He paid a 13.9% tax rate on an annual income of $20 million and never lifted a finger to do any work to earn even a penny of it. Romney offshores a portion of his riches in order to defer and avoid paying any U.S. taxes.....if elected, plans to lower taxes on rich people like himself by an additional 20%.....and yet....Mitt Romney had the nerve to bash poor working families as "dependent on government", self-claimed "victims", who Divine Mitt cannot convince to "take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
You may remember my recent blog post entitled "Stick Fork in When Done". Yesterday, Politico, had their own inside-baseball eulogy of Mitt Romney and his awful campaign. Romney's campaign alone, a campaign Mitt is in complete control of, proves that he is incapable of running the country. He is the worst GOP candidate in memory.....and has rightly earned the sound beating he will receive in November by a voting population who deserves better.
