Pre-emption As Political Policy

By The Reverend Published: August 12, 2007

It surely is not news that the neo-conservatives in and around the White House are looking diligently for an excuse to attack Iran. Whether these extremists, including Cheney AND Bush, will actually attack another sovereign country is still unclear.

Although the illegal invasion and continuing occupation of Iraq was simply the carrying out of radical neo-cons plans from the 90's to establish a permanent military presence inside of oil rich Iraq.....the timing of the Iraq attack, The Reverend believes, was determined by the political calendar of Bush's re-election campaign.

Now it appears at least possible, I would say highly probable, that the political calendar will, once again, be the determining factor for these maniacs.

Here is what the Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote recently about this.....

Here is my nightmare. The Cheneyites succeed in creating a situation in which Bush does decide to bomb Iran. Iran retaliates, as they openly threaten to do, with terrorist attacks against us on U.S. soil. That tilts the election. I can imagine a Karl Rove political calculation that would buttress a Cheney-Addington national security calculation, probably with Eliot Abrams' support. Link

Dan Froomkin does an excellent job here marshalling quotes from White House sources....quotes like this one....

"This White House official has stated to several Washington insiders that Cheney is planning to deploy an 'end run strategy' around the President if he and his team lose the policy argument. . . .

"According to this official, Cheney believes that Bush can not be counted on to make the 'right decision' when it comes to dealing with Iran and thus Cheney believes that he must tie the President's hands.'"

Consider for a moment.....the people who gave us the quagmire formerly known as Iraq, enabling the illusion of a "war president" who needed to be re-elected to save the nation.....are the same people who have been talking up an Iran attack.

Though it is still early in the run-up to next November's presidential election, the GOP's chances don't look very good, and I'm trying to be kind.

If Karl Rove believes attacking Iran will bolster the GOP's chances next November and especially if Karl Rove believes any ensuing chaos or martial law will aid the GOP presidential candidate(looks like Rudy), thus placing yet another "unitary executive" authoritarian in the White House, is there even a reasonable argument that he WON'T encourage it??

If you go here you will see that the wingnut media is chomping at the bit for another 9-11 like event. Could an Iran attack give them their wishes? Stay tuned.
