My step-daughter and her husband visited Yellowstone National Park last week. The pictures they brought home were great, some quite spectacular. I asked my step daughter how she would like it if Yellowstone was privatized, sold off, or leased off to some for-profit enterprise. She responded that anyone who tried to do something like that should be put in prison.
I suppose she meant guys like this guy....
On Tuesday, (Senator Ted) Cruz (R-TX) filed an amendment to the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2014 (S. 2363) to force the federal government to sell off a significant portion of the country’s most prized lands in the West. The amendment would prohibit the federal government from owning more than 50 percent of any land within one state, and requires the government to transfer the excess land to the states or sell it to the highest bidder.
Yes, Cruz is a crazy dude. Worse, many of the Very Serious have been touting Cruz as the likely GOP presidential candidate in 2016. When Cruz playacted an ego-driven, "filibuster" in his attempt to rescind Obamacare.....the Villagers rallied in support of the crazy man. Conservative base voters instantly made Cruz there preferred favorite to go against Hillary in 2016.
But Cruz is not the Lone Ranger of the GOP when it comes to selling off federal lands, national parks, etc.....
The amendment aligns Cruz with the other 15 incumbent members of Congress who agree with Bundy that America’s public lands should be seized by the states or sold off for drilling, mining, or logging. Highlighted in a new series from the Center for American Progress Action Fund, these “Bundy’s Buddies” support the extremely costly and unconstitutional proposals to seize and sell off America’s public lands, which are also far from mainstream views of Americans in the West.
Go here to see who else is crazy like a Cruz You might be surprised to see the names of Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Senator Dean Heller (R-NV), Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and other Republicans, as supportive of selling off federal lands, parks, whatever....as a route to ushering in some type of libertarian utopia.
My step daughter explained that during the summer approximately 25,000 cars pass through Yellowstone...per day. The cost for a park pass, good for a week, is $25. I explained that with that much demand, privatizers, profit-seekers, and scammers, drool over the prospects of charging $100, or similar, for a Yellowstone pass....and that that was the reason corporate shills like Ted Cruz were anxious to auction off America's national resource assets.
National parks, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone.....you name it. If the federal government owns it, and the American public visits in large numbers.....greedmongers want to profit from it. And besides, national parks are just so....socialistic.
That is also true of the Social Security revenue stream, the Medicare revenue stream, the Medicaid revenue stream, etc. In fact, if the Party of Lincoln had their druthers, the entire revenue stream of the federal government would pass through profit-seeking hands before any government services were delivered to....anybody. Just how they roll.
Many Democrats are almost as bad when it comes to serving the greedheads among us...but the GOP makes privatizing all things governmental a yearly platform plank of their entire party. The GOP is the Party of Me, not the Party of We......and they are proud of it.
So, if you are thinking.....hell, Rev....they'll never be allowed to sell off national parks like Yellowstone....you should probably review that thinking. There is NOTHING that is immune to this type of greed-gone-insane as evidenced in Ted Cruz's amendment to sell off prized natural possessions of the People.
Greedmongering conservatives and so-called libertarians play a long game, a patient game. Incremental destruction of the Commons is their policy. And all to further enrich those who are already enriched.
This particular issue....this rejection of the We for the sake of the Me....is one of the most disgusting "values" of the Greedy Old Party.
You may not get exercised, one way or the other, over Obamacare, or foreign policy, or whether a President "visits" a winger-filled protest at the border......but I'm guessing most folks would start to get riled up over selling Yellowstone to, say, Disney.
Today's post is a wake-up call to anyone being lulled to sleep by the daily propaganda. Yes, this particular brand of Republicans would sell America's children to the highest bidder if the monthly dividend checks issued as a result were large enough. And they wouldn't think twice about it, either.
First they came for the jobs.....then our wages.....then our homes....our pensions....our college graduates futures.....and now they have our wondrous, irreplaceable natural parks in their sights.
Don't you think it's time to stop them?
