Republicans would be against restoring habeas rights because they.....umm.....don't believe in those rights. At least today's Republicans don't.
WASHINGTON (Map, News) - The Senate narrowly rejected legislation on Wednesday that would have given military detainees the right to protest their detention in federal court.
The 56-43 vote against the bill, by Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Arlen Specter, R-Pa., fell four votes shy of the 60 needed to cut off debate. It was a blow for human rights groups that say a current ban on habeas corpus petitions could lead to the indefinite detention of individuals wrongfully suspected of terrorism.
President Bush and conservative Republicans counter that the ban, enacted last year, was necessary to stem the tide of legal protests flooding civilian courts. Link
Now imagine for a moment. George W. Bush, unquestioningly doomed to go down as America's worst president ever, has told us all those many times that them there goddamned ter'rists hate us because of....wait for it now...."our freedoms". Right? This has been the neo-con bullpucky slogan since 9-11. Why do they hate us? They hate us because of our freedoms.
So The Reverend finds himself in the midst of a WTF moment.
If Bush and his treasonous Rubber Stamper co-conspirators in the Senate actually, like, believe their own bullsh*t....then why would they vote to pacify the "hate" of our enemies by deciding to continue the loss of one of our "freedoms that they hate", habeas corpus?
The right, since the Magna Carta, against unlawful imprisonment without charges of a crime, has to be one of the "freedoms" Osama's boys "hate". I mean....with Osama's penchant for extremist Islamic law and all. So why would the White House and the GOP Rubber Stampers want to do what Osama wants to do, that is, take away those hated freedoms Americans have grown accustomed to enjoying in a, you know, free society?
You know me, I don't want to belabor the issue, but aren't we in the middle of the Most Greatest and Bestest and Longest War of Wars to End All Wars That Have Ever Been Warred? And we've been told so many times that our Mostest Fiercest Bloodthirstiest and Dangerous Enemy Ever is so full of hate, so much hate that they ran planes into buildings just to demonstrate how much hate they have for us.....and that hate is because of OUR FREEDOMS.
The only conclusion one can come to, knowing all of what I have just said, is that the Bush White House and all 43 Republican senators have now taken sides with the enemy. George W. Bush and 43 similarly despicable GOP senators, by rejecting habeas corpus, have declared war against our freedoms, just like Osama.
