Pushback against Pope Francis' evisceration of supply side economics and condemnation of the idolaters of money.......continues.....
“I’ve told the Cardinal,” (Home Depot billionaire CEO) Langone said, “‘Your Eminence, this is one more hurdle I hope we don’t have to deal with. You want to be careful about generalities. Rich people in one country don’t act the same as rich people in another country.’”
.... he hopes Pope Francis will “celebrate a positive point of view rather than focusing on the negative.” He does worry, though, because of “the vast difference between the Pope’s experience in Argentina and how we are in America. There is no nation on earth that is so forthcoming, so giving.”
How "giving"?......Sept. 2013....
“Unfortunately, the ACA [Affordable Care Act] precludes us from offering the limited liability medical plan we’ve been offering the part-time associates,” said Stephen Holmes, the (Home Depot) company’s director of corporate communications.
That's how "giving."
Langone's take is the same one Republican heartthrob Paul Ryan took recently when he criticized the Argentinian Pope for being kind of foolish and sheltered because his home nation of Argentina only "knew" crony capitalism. Gag me with a spoon.
But take note here. The Home Depot CEO, like any ordinary thug, threatens the Pope at the same time he is explaining how his fee-fees, and those of other like-minded rich folk, have been oh-so-bruised by the Pope's clear condemnations of an economic system which is rigged in favor of those same rich.
Also, too.....Obama called guys like Langone "fatcats" once.....and you may recall from the likes of Forbes and the Wall Street Journal, that there just weren't enough waambulances or grief counselors to console the poor, oh-so-offended billionaires.
You see, the "giving" Langone mentions is a direct threat to the Pope and his church. Langone is actually suggesting that if the Pope doesn't quit railing against the system which has created America's worst income inequality gaps in modern history.....then, very rich guys, like himself, will stop donating to the Pope's church.
That is akin to bribing a local preacher to stop preaching about the dangers inherent in human greed. That....also....reminds of congressional Republicans threatening pro-sports leagues if those leagues assisted in promoting or advertising Obamacare. Wouldn't want anything to happen to your pro-sports "brand", now would you......Mitch McConnell ostensibly wrote in a letter to all pro-sports leagues.
In fact, what this all looks like to me is a small minority.....rich Americans and their bought-and-paid-for politicians....attempting to use thuggish threats to silence the majority, in this case, as heard in the true and accurate words of Pope Francis.
Good, honest, decent people often avoid confrontations or arguments....choosing instead to treat others like they want to be treated. Thugs often exploit that goodness, that decency......through intimidation and threats. But when the thugs are losing an argument.....they sometimes prey upon the compassion of average Americans by pretending to have terribly hurt feelings. That's what CEO Langone, and others, are doing in the wake of Pope Francis' bold messaging.
Do not get sucked into that trap. Do not.....repeat....do not....allow yourself to feel sorry for these minority thugs. They, not all but many, are entirely indifferent to the dire situations tens of millions of average Americans have found themselves in this past decade through no fault of their own.
On one hand we have a tiny minority of very rich Americans complaining because their feelings are hurt by the truthful and accurate words of Pope Francis. On the other hand, tens of millions of not-rich Americans have lost jobs, homes, food stamps, unemployment benefits.....and hope.
I know which "hand" I stand with.
The job of average Americans this new year is to not be intimidated or moved by these minority thugs. Very wealthy Americans, and the politicians they own, are no better than you or I. Our job this year will take courage and staying power. The wealthiest, and their pet politicians, will continue to try to wear us down any way they can. Our job is to resist.....and then, vote their pet politicians out of office this November.
Let's give them something to really whine about.
