Romney Threatens All Americans

By The Reverend Published: November 3, 2012

When George W. Bush was president, Republican congressional figures voted 7 times in favor of raising the nation's credit limit. 7 times. In those seven separate votes by Republicans to raise the national debt ceiling, not once did Republican congressional figures take a hostage.

While Bush was doubling the national debt in 8 years, 7 times requesting, and receiving, increases to our nation's credit limit....not once did conservative fiscal hawks come forward with a ransom note for Mr. Bush. Not once did Very Serious Republicans in Congress threaten Mr. Bush, saying that if he didn't agree to cut spending they would shut down the government and jeopardize the credit rating of the U.S.

Not one time.

With Mr. Obama, a Democrat and our country's first black president, there have been 3 attempts in under 4 years by congressional Republicans to stop funding the government entirely, with one of those attempts, during an argument over raising the nation's credit limit, resulting in economic and credit ratings damage to the country.

Yesterday, Mr. Romney, realizing he will lose his presidential contest next Tuesday, pulled a ransom note out of his bag, stepped to a microphone in West Chester, Ohio, and threatened all Americans....

“You know that if the President is re-elected, he will still be unable to work with the people in Congress,” Romney said. “He has ignored them, attacked them, blamed them. The debt ceiling will come up again, and shutdown and default will be threatened, chilling the economy.”

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Mr. Romney.....unable any longer to ignore the obvious, did what most bullies do when they're cornered by defeat....he threatened all Americans. If Americans didn't elect Mr. Romney president, he couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be yet another GOP-led, government shutdown, a possible defaulting on America's debt and/or a new GOP-created recession.

In other words....Nice recovering economy ya' got goin' there. It would be a shame if anything really bad happened to it.

Mr. Romney's lead in to his ransom terms wrongly placed the burden on Mr. Obama for the three previous hostage taking events all instigated by congressional Republicans. Again, from 2009-2011, GOP Senators set a new all time record for number of obstructionistic filibusters to stop Mr. Obama's policy agenda. Following the 2010 mid-terms, GOP Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell, declared the GOP's top priority to be "making Barack Obama a one term president."

Furthermore, Mr. Obama's record shows that he was wiling to insert less-stimulative tax cuts in his stimulus legislation in order to please conservatives, constructed his entire Obamacare legislation on Republican policy planks (mandate, health exchanges, no public option) and was able to work with John Boehner on a compromise "bargain" in 2011, one which Boehner could not sell to Tea Party House zealots.

I think it's transparently clear which side of the aisle was unwilling to work with the other side.

Mr. Romney's words from West Chester, Ohio were billed as his "closing argument" of the campaign. His words don't form an argument at all....only a threat. Mr. Romney threatened all Americans, telling us that he couldn't promise that the GOP TeaHouse fanatics wouldn't tear the country into economic shreds if Mr. Obama won re-election.

If Americans did not vote for Mr. Romney to become president, Mr. Romney was certain that congressional Republicans would drag our fragile recovery through new hostage-taking swamps of despair. If Obama should happen to be re-elected, Mr. Romney cannot guarantee that his fellow Republicans in Congress won't purposely drive our nation's economic recovery off a cliff. And nobody wants any of that to do they?

Quite a closing argument. For, like, a mob boss lawyer.
