Yesterday, the faith-based conservative media usual-suspects....Fox, Heritage, Limbaugh....keenly aware that their GOP presidential candidate is imploding before American voter's eyes over tax returns he's hiding as well as his ridiculous notion of a "retroactive retirement".....grasped for the only tool in their back pocket......deception. Some might call it disinformation, some might call it desperation......I call it what it is: dishonest deception.
"If you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own. You didn't get there on your own. I'm always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," he said. "The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."
Obviously, the point being made was that no businessperson is an island unto himself. Without infrastructure, education, law enforcement, the military, and many other government-produced systems and services......businesses could not thrive in the U.S. like they do. Stating that fact is not an insult to business people....it's simply stating what's obvious. Whether we like it or not, we truly are in this America-thing together.
Immediately, the Jimmy O'Keefe School of Journalism Graduates, aka the Heritage Foundation, the Romney campaign, Fox, Head Dittohead, et.al. chopped up what Obama said in Virginia and analyzed the pieces.....similar to pagans examining entrails for insight into the future.....and decided to distil those two Obama paragraphs down to this....
"If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."
Heritage, Fox, and the rest, then turned their Rwanda Radio loudspeakers up to eleven and sent the decontextualized sentence, meant to deceive potential voters, out to millions of Americans. Meanwhile, the Romney campaign, anxious to change the subject away from secret tax returns, outsourcing-for-profits and retroactive retirement gibberish..... put their deceptive freak on, telling Fox.....
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul told FoxNews.com on Monday that the remarks "reflect just how unqualified he is to lead us to a real economic recovery."
"They are also insulting to the hardworking entrepreneurs, small-business owners, and job creators who are the backbone of our economy," she said in an email.
Meanwhile, the King of Conservatism, Rush Limbaugh.....continuing the deception by repeating the cherry picked, out of context Obama sentence.....went on to say that what Obama said was evidence of the president's hatred of America, "Obama despises America."
Somehow, in all the smoke caused, I guess, by the speed with which the faith based deception artists spun their new invention.......Obama's comments in Virginia were boiled down further into mini-deception claims, or in street language....lies built on lies.
Somehow, what Obama had said became....
"....an utter lack of understanding and appreciation for the people who take a huge personal risk and work endless hours to start a business and create jobs."
Pointing out that the roads in front of your business, the cops who keep criminals from stealing the fruits of a business person's labor, schools that educate a business person's workers and customers, etc......are there as a result of our collective effort through government......is not the same as saying that business people didn't work for what they have. In fact....in the same speech that has had one sentence lifted and decontextualized by deception artists on the right, Obama also said this....
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."
That is not an attack on the work ethic of business people, or even a criticism of business people.....it's reality. Yes, individual responsibility and hard work is invaluable in America, but without the collective system and services we the people have accomplished together.....individual responsibility and hard work would all be for naught.
Mitt Romney's campaign is being hooked up to life support after he stated again yesterday morning, despite calls from many prominent Republican leaders, that he is NOT releasing any more tax returns. Hey, it's his call. But it makes people think he's hiding something. Couple that with Mitt's new and improved L'il Jimmy O'Keefe-style editing-for-deceptive-purposes skills....and what we get is a more secretive, shadowy, and more deceptive candidate than we started with.
Totally unqualified for the presidency.
