I remember listening to the Tennessee cracker, Republican Senator Bob Corker, during the auto bailout hearings. I remember listening to Corker because of what he had to say about U.S. unionized autoworkers. Corker wanted United States autoworkers to work for less money. At the time I thought that sounded odd. Why would a U.S. senator want American workers to work for less, to receive less for their efforts? I thought U.S. senators represented, you know, Americans.
What Cracker Bob was encouraging at the time was the total elimination of the autoworkers union. Unionized workers earn more on average than their non-union counterparts...and to Corker and his GOP buddies....that is seen as a bug to be eliminated not a feature to be celebrated. Since that time in early 2009, we have witnessed a full scale onslaught upon unionized workers by Republican elected officials.
Republican elected officials have made it crystal clear that they fully embrace ideology which insists upon American workers working for less. The GOP has traditionally been a political party who loves to start wars......and this time the war the GOP has declared is against our own citizens. The backlash from voters is building like a giant tidal wave as seen in Wisconsin's recall initiative against 6 GOP state senators and Ohio's gathering of over 700,000 signatures to place an initiative on this fall's ballot to overrule LittleJohn Kasich's union busting legislation. But until these GOP posers are sent back to the minors where they belong, United States workers will remain under siege.
Which leads me to this NY Times article.
At a sprawling manufacturing complex here (Shanghai), hundreds of Chinese laborers are now completing work on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
Next month, the last four of more than two dozen giant steel modules — each with a roadbed segment about half the size of a football field — will be loaded onto a huge ship and transported 6,500 miles to Oakland. There, they will be assembled to fit into the eastern span of the new Bay Bridge.
The California project is a public project paid for by the sale of bonds which will be repaid by drivers paying bridge tolls.
By the way, while I'm thinking about it, the nation of China is still run by a centralized communist government, a centralized communist government which actually owns the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company selected to build the bridge for California .....just thought I'd throw that in for extra seasoning.
The following brings Cracker Bob, the GOP's current war on workers, and what looks like a bleak future for American labor...together in a perfect race-to-the-bottom stormfront.....
Pan Zhongwang, a 55-year-old steel polisher, is a typical Zhenhua worker. He arrives at 7 a.m. and leaves at 11 p.m., often working seven days a week. He lives in a company dorm and earns about $12 a day.
“It used to be $9 a day, now it’s $12,” he said Wednesday morning, while polishing one of the decks for the new Bay Bridge. “Everything is getting more expensive. They should raise our pay.”
Skilled steel workers...working for a little less than one dollar per hour.
When all that matters is money.....and let's face it, that's all that matters in a nation slowly embracing greed as a virtue.....then all that's left for U.S. workers to look forward to is 15 hour days at under one dollar per hour wages.....and that's if you possess a skill.
I need someone to explain to me how this California bridge project....writ large....will help the citizens of the United States who work for a living.
