Speaking Loudly Yet Remaining Silent

By The Reverend Published: October 29, 2013

The New Confederacy General, Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, is leading yet another coup attempt against our democracy. This time, Renegade Teddy has girded his loins for a fight to protect the True Americans of our nation.....the very rich....

Last week, Mr. Cruz blocked the Senate from considering the nomination of Tom Wheeler to lead the commission (Federal Communications Commission) — a candidate who leaders from both parties had agreed would be put up for a vote without delay.

Why block Wheeler?

Mr. Cruz has put a hold on the nomination, his spokesman told reporters, to find out if Mr. Wheeler would vote to require greater disclosure about political ads on television and radio bought by independent groups. Such groups can currently keep donors secret even as they spend hundreds of millions of dollars to influence elections. Mr. Cruz says he is trying to get more information and to make sure the F.C.C. does not exceed its authority.

Did you get that? Cruz is holding up the nominee to lead the FCC because he's not quite sure that the nominee, Tom Wheeler, will protect to the death the anonymity of very rich donors when they "free speak" with their loot. I find that quite interesting coming from Texas' new man of the people. But there's more...

Mr. Cruz knows that Congress will not repeal federal laws granting the F.C.C. power to require disclosure, so he is trying to bully Mr. Wheeler into agreeing not to exercise the agency’s authority. The fact is, neither he nor supporters of Republican candidates and conservative causes want disclosure of spending on commercials by groups like Americans for Prosperity, which is backed by the billionaire Koch brothers.

Well...that sounds familiar...doesn't it? Republican elected officials don't do much....but what they do...do....is look after the...very rich, and always with tender loving care rarely witnessed coming from bullies. Cruz is playing the bully for the sole purpose of keeping Tom Wheeler from "exercising the agency's authority", which includes the authority to demand media outlets reveal donors of political ads.....

...the F.C.C. clearly has the authority to require disclosure of who pays for commercial and political speech on public airwaves under communications laws dating back to the 1930s.

Now think along with me here. The Roberts Court in Citizens United ruled that money equals free speech. That, of course, is ridiculous as well as disingenuous....but that was their ruling. Because the Court claimed money equaled free speech....government allegedly had no right to limit the use of money in political advocacy.

But how is it that a very rich person is guaranteed anonymity at the same time he is exercising free speech? Does the rich person have something to say? And if he does, why would he want to remain anonymous while saying it? Isn't the whole idea of free speech to give opportunity to any citizen to be recognized for having something to say?

Now, why would a very rich person want to remain anonymous if he "free speeched" a couple million, or a couple hundred million? Why wouldn't a very rich person who is free speechifying with his huge bank account want to be identified for the cause or candidate he spends all those millions in free speech on? In other words, why hide and remain silent about one's identity, if you believe so strongly in your convictions that you would spend millions on blanketing those convictions across the airwaves?

And is there something in the first amendment.....the amendment that is totally silent about money....that guarantees anonymity to those who speak with bags of cash? If so, I haven't been able to find it.

Make no mistake about Confederate Ted (has a certain ring to it, no?). Ted wants the new Confederacy army of the rich he's leading against the Union to be a stealth army....

The Tea Party senator is also an opponent of the DISCLOSE Act, which would require outside groups like unions, corporations and political action committees to notify the Federal Elections Commission when they spend more than $10,000 to air campaign ads.

The great man of the aw-shucks Real Americans out there in Real America is working oh-so-hard to do the bidding of a tiny group of very rich Americans....as that tiny group continues to takeover the United States of America. Ted wants to provide cover for the insurgency of rich oligarchs as they metaphorically burn the fields, burn the towns and rape the citizens of this great country, all as part of their larger quest to overthrow the Union.

The insult here is that while a tiny band of marauding rich oligarchs swallow our democracy and destroy the futures of millions of Americans, General Ted of the New South wants those marauding gangs of very rich thugs to remain anonymous.

Don't forget, Ted Cruz is the darling of the Tea Party.
