Dr. James Powell did some searching....
I searched the Web of Science, an online science publication tool, for peer-reviewed scientific articles published between January first 1991 and November 9th 2012 that have the keyword phrases “global warming” or “global climate change.” The search produced 13,950 articles.
Only 24 of those articles rejected global warming altogether or supported a cause for global warming other than CO2 emissions. Those 24 articles account for .17% of all peer reviewed articles on the subject. That's point one seven percent.
Yes, I suppose it's possible that the other 13,926 articles could have been written by hundreds of scientists paid to simply make shite up for financial reasons. I guess that is possible. But I'm thinking not very likely.
Yet, last week on What's New In DittoHeadWorld, Mr. Conservative confidently and boldly asserted that global climate change has now been proven to be a big hoax. Quite a distance between those 13,926 peer reviewed scientific articles confirming global climate change, and man's contribution to it,....and....never mind, it's all a big hoax. But that's where we're at in our faith versus facts nation in the year 2013.
Of course, this "controversy" has been raging down in the snake-infested, fever swamps of the extreme right ever since Al Gore grew a beard, gained weight and made a movie. Hacked e-mails from East Anglia University in Britain were supposed to be the crushing gotcha blow to the thousands of scientists apparently caught up in a huge, multi-decade conspiracy to create and perpetuate a colossal hoax on all of earth's inhabitants. Oddly, the motivation or goal of said hoaxsters has never been fully explained.
The Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee held a nomination hearing Wednesday to consider Gina McCarthy for head of the EPA. The EPA is despised by the GOP and is often the first agency Republicans mention for extinction.....and so, most of Senate GOP questions were about some meaningless and trivial twaddle over Ms. McCarthy's use or non-use of e-mail. No kidding.
Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-VT), having suffered enough fools, cut to the chase....
"Senator Barrasso (R-WY) made it clear what this debate is about. It is a debate about global warming. And whether or not we are going to listen to leading scientists of this country, who are telling us that global warming is the most serious planetary crisis that we and the global community face and whether we are going to address that crisis in a serious manner.
What Senator Barrasso has just said is "no", he does not want the EPA to listen to science. What he wants is us to continue doing as little as possible.....So let me go on record as saying I want the EPA to be vigorous in protecting our children and future generations....."
"What we have heard recently from scientists is that their early projections on global warming were wrong. That, in fact, they underestimated the problem, and that the conditions they were worried about will likely be worse than what they had previously thought...."
This exchange is priceless....
Sanders: "What Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) has written and talked about is his belief that global warming is one of the major hoaxes ever perpetrated on the American people. That the whole push is by people like Al Gore, the United Nations and the Hollywood elite. I think that is a fair quote from Senator Inhofe....is that roughly right Senator Inhofe?"
Imhofe: "Why yes, I would add to that list MoveOn.org, George Soros, Michael Moore and a few others." (Laughter)
Sanders: "All right there we go....So that is the issue. That's exactly the issue. Do we agree with Senator Inhofe that global warming is a hoax and that we do not want the federal government, the EPA, the Dept of Energy to address that issue because it is a "hoax" according to Sen. Inhofe and others....or do we believe and agree with the overwhelming majority of scientists who tell us that global warming is the most serious planetary crisis that we face? That is what the issue is."
There are very few true liberals in Congress. Painfully few. Bernie Sanders is one of those few....and he couldn't have done a better job Wednesday of defining and describing what's at stake in the global warming front.
Either 99.87% of peer reviewed, scientific articles confirming the threat of global climate change are on the level and the threat can not be ignored without cataclysmic outcomes.....OR..... faith-based Senator's shilling for Big Oil and Gas and hate-monger radio celebrities who make millions for carrying the water of the 1% are correct and all this talk about the earth warming and CO2 emissions, and we need to do something about it is just.....One. Big. Hoax.
In my humblest of opinions.....this one is not even a close call.
