Taking The Geezers Hostage

By The Reverend Published: December 7, 2012

Fox does it daily, Rush does it hourly....Mitt Romney did it continually.

What? Lie and mislead.

As TPM points out, here is the GOP Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell....lying his ass off in order to mislead....

“By demanding the power to raise the debt limit whenever he wants by as much as he wants, [President Obama] showed what he’s really after is assuming unprecedented power to spend taxpayer dollars without any limit,” McConnell argued on the Senate floor.

Who authorizes the spending of money in our federal government system? Congress.

If debt is incurred by the federal government, who authorized the original spending? Congress.

When the credit limit for the U.S. government is reached and needs lifted to a higher ceiling in order to pay the bills for spending already ordered by Congress....does that higher credit limit give the president "unprecedented power to spend taxpayer dollars"? Absolutely not.

What does raising the nation's borrowing limit allow to happen? Lifting the ceiling allows the government to continue to pay debt, to pay for bills, already voted upon in Congress.

Why would Mitch McConnell lie about the debt ceiling? Because Republicans are angry about losing the battle to protect the top 2% from tax increases...they're angrier still over President Obama's claim recently that he would not "play the game" over lifting the nation's credit limit like he did last August.

Since the election, Republican leaders have been looking all around for a new hostage to ransom during negotiations over the Village-manufactured "fiscal cliff." Republicans see the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts as the right time to ransom America's elderly. It's all very charming. In return for closing a few loopholes in the tax code which might cause our wealthiest to pay a bit more in taxes....Republicans are demanding a good hard beating be delivered to America's elderly.

Raise the Medicare eligibility age up to 67, Republicans say.....and cut payouts to the elderly and the disabled on Social Security by rejiggering the Consumer Price Index formula......and Republicans will gladly allow billionaire tax loopholes to be, maybe, closed. But no tax rate increases....ever.

The math doesn't add up....again....but Republicans could care less about that. They are the mighty deficit hawks who aren't.

The GOP leaders, after four years of hostage taking events to stop the will of the people, have finally run out of options. All congressional Democrats have to do is...nothing.....and come January 1st, the Bush-era tax cuts are no more. Republicans realize what will immediately follow. The Senate already has a bill prepared to re-cut tax rates for everyone making under $250,000. The House Republicans will be faced with voting against a tax cut for 98% of Americans....something they want to avoid.

Feeling somewhat like a cornered rat, Speaker Boehner recently restated his methodology when negotiating. "I've made it clear to the president, that every time we get to the debt limit, we need to cut some reforms that are greater than the increase in the debt limit. It's the only way to leverage the political process to produce more change than what it would if left alone."

The word "leverage" there is a synonym for "extort."

Mitch McConnell found it necessary to lie about the president's power in relationship to raising the debt ceiling in order to emotionally prepare his constituent marks for Republicans upcoming hostage taking of the geezers.

Not much new...really...in any of it. Last August, Republicans came within an eyelash of killing the hostage....the American economy. That was to remind voters that they are crazy enough to really smuck stuff up for everybody.

This time it looks like Republicans will drag out vulnerable and sick elderly Americans from nursing homes, and from wheel chairs....place guns to their heads....and threaten to shoot.....if the wealthiest 2% don't get their tax breaks.

Like I said, charming.
