Fox's Chris Wallace and Sen. John McCain on Fox News Sunday yesterday questioning Obama's closing of 19 U.S. embassies last week....
Wallace: ....."in closing those embassies to respond to the terror threat or are some of the foreign partners say -- did it seem to be an act on retreat of the part of this country against its threats in the Middle East?"
McCain: "Look, Al Qaeda is on the rise, they have continued to penetrate. They have now a free zone in the Iraq/Syria areas -- the border. .... Al Qaeda is strengthening every day in every way because of a lack of American leadership and policy...."
WALLACE: "Senator, a moment ago you said that Al Qaeda is on the rise. I mean, you're not suggesting that Al Qaeda is stronger than it was pre-9/11?"
MCCAIN: "I'm saying they have metastasized in a way they may pose great threats throughout the Middle East, that they can destabilize nations, that they can commit acts of terror literally anywhere. And there's the perception throughout the Middle East that there's no American leadership, there's no policy,....."
"And (the global war on terror) is going to be around for quite some time, and the threat, again, is not getting less. It's getting worse, and we need to deal with it in a responsible way and not put our head in the sand..."
The U.S. has been waging a very expensive Global War on Terror for almost 12 full years now.....our nation's longest "war" ever. We've been waging this alleged war in multiple nations....Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia.....to name a few. Between 6000 and 7000 U.S. soldiers have died in the 12 year long war, with tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers wounded.....many horribly. We've spent a couple of trillion dollars so far over a dozen years on the most sophisticated and powerful military machine the world has ever seen.
Here in the "homeland" over these past 12 years, Americans have been trained to accept torture, extraordinary rendition (kidnapping), pre-emptive wars of choice, and offshore gulags. Our citizens are treated as suspects now inside an airport. Our rights to privacy, our protections against government, as spelled out in the 4th amendment against unreasonable search and seizure, have been compromised. Our free citizens are just now finding out that. since 2001, our "protectors" have been collecting and storing every U.S. electronic communication.....and all without specific individualized warrants. Since 2001, the FBI has been given the power to write their own National Security Letters instead of obtaining judicial warrants to spy on specific Americans.
In short.....Americans have sacrificed much over these past 12 years of our seemingly endless war against a tactic. And many of these sacrifices have come during a grinding recession where most Americans have lost a third of their net worth.
......and yet yesterday, two Republican hawks explained how the original threat from our alleged enemy...al-Qaeda...is worse now than ever.
12 years of killing, maiming, spying on Americans, torturing, pre-empting, Gitmo-ing, droning, spending trillions and.......most of all......breeding an environment of fear.....and the original threat......"is worse now than ever."
1) Are these two GOP hawks correct?
2) If they are correct, how would you characterize America's success over these past 12 years of endless war against, originally, a few thousand Islamic dead-enders?
