Gift Cards

By The Reverend Published: December 24, 2010

You buy them, you receive them as gifts. Seems like everyone sells them. Gift cards.

I've been wanting to say something about gift cards for awhile, and Christmas Eve seems like an appropriate time to do so. Now, just so we all understand each other....the rotation of the earth doesn't depend on whether U.S. retailers sell gift cards and U.S. consumers purchase them. Gift cards are simply a pet peeve of mine. At the same time, I think gift cards are illustrative of America's modern money shuffling, productionless, transactional economy.

Centrist Prez...Centrist Results

By The Reverend Published: December 23, 2010

Today's Beacon editorial lists the accomplishments of the current Congress. It's a fair and balanced piece which mentions the new health care law, financial reform, regulating the tobacco industry, updating food safety oversight, reforming student loans, the stimulus, auto-industry bailout loans,...and in the past few weeks.....the Start Treaty, repealing DADT, and funding 9-11 responders health care.

All worthwhile efforts, to be sure.

Weighing "The Necessity Of Detention"

By The Reverend Published: December 22, 2010

Of all of the policy differences I had with the still-unindicted Bush-Cheney regime, it was the "war on terror" extremities which were the most unAmerican and criminal. Extraordinary rendition.....kidnapping someone in one country and transporting that person to another country to be tortured. Torture......sleep deprivation, heat and cold deprivation, hanging from arms by chains, being stuffed in a casket sized box for long periods of time, slamming a detainee up against walls, and our new national favorite...waterboarding. Wars of choice.....defrauding America and Congress into attacking the nation of Iraq.

But it is Guantanomo that stands as the symbol of the newer, more brutal, more inhumane, America. And it is Guantanomo where President Obama, despite his campaign promises to the contrary, continues to follow in the footsteps of the Terror Twins.

GOP Fables

By The Reverend Published: December 21, 2010

During the tense Republican hostage taking crisis that Americans experienced over the last number of weeks, a pseudo-argument popped up from the conservative side which asserted, repeatedly, that tax cutting doesn't cost the government anything. Tax cuts are not spending.

That pseudo-argument has been sticking in my craw, not because it is compelling, but just the opposite.....because it is just silly.

Torturing Bradley Manning

By The Reverend Published: December 16, 2010

One of the most regrettable practices our nation has embraced and defended over the last 10 years is the practice of torturing those we have incarcerated. Nothing is more cowardly than punishing a person who can not defend himself.....either physically or psychologically. The moment the news leaked to the world that America had adopted torture as a policy, was the moment we surrendered in the so-called war on terror.

Bradley Manning is a United States citizen. He is 22 years old, a U.S. Army private, and he is accused of leaking classified material. For the past 5 months, Bradley has been detained in a Quantico, VA brig. Before that Manning spent 2 months in a military jail in Kuwait.

Liquid Plastic

By The Reverend Published: December 15, 2010

I have always thought there was something odd about Mitt Romney, former and future presidential candidate for the Republican Party.

He seems like a nice enough guy. Smiles a lot.....kind of a handsome man....tall....nice family.....very rich. And after all, Romney was the governor of Massachusetts when that state adopted and implemented a universal health care plan for the how extreme could the Mittster really be?

Don't Ask.....Don't Care

By The Reverend Published: December 10, 2010

After Bob Gates and Admiral Mullen testified so powerfully a few days ago in favor of the military ending it's discriminatory policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell......and after each of the military service commanders testified that they would make ending DADT work....I figured that Republican Senators would go along with military leaders and endorse the elimination of the ugly policy. After all, even the Mighty Patriotic Warrior, John McCain, had said he would change his mind over ending the policy if military commanders agreed.

But I figured wrongly.

Gasoline Prices & Markets

By The Reverend Published: December 9, 2010

Perhaps you've noticed the ever increasing price of gasoline the last few months. In my experience retailers have raised their prices, sometimes by 20-23 cents in one day, only to lower prices by a penny or two every day after......creating the perception that prices were coming down. Then, another spike of 15-25 cents followed and the whole cycle repeated itself.

Maybe Americans are using a whole bunch more gasoline than they did last year at this time......causing the supply and demand gods to raise prices because we're using more of the stuff....maybe....

Obama: No, We Actually Can't

By The Reverend Published: December 7, 2010

I have no idea if Congress can pass the tax cut-extension package agreement announced yesterday by President Obama. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has already threatened to lead a filibuster if the compromise provisions Obama announced come to the Senate as is.

In the deal, Republicans get the Bush-era tax rates extended on America's richest for a couple years. The GOP also pressured Obama, and he caved, to give them a temporary 35% inheritance tax rate and raise the taxable estate value to $5 million.

Things That Are Not The Same

By The Reverend Published: December 6, 2010

You know the brain teasers. I know you do. The ones where the reader is asked to look at two very similar things and then point out how, in fact, the two are actually dissimilar.

That's kind of like what the U.S. Senate is in the middle of right now.

Holding Out For Their 2% Majority Base

By The Reverend Published: December 4, 2010

The Senate is meeting today to hold a couple of "fake filibuster" votes on extending...or not cuts passed in 2001. These 2001 tax cuts were designed by Republicans to expire January, 2011. They were designed to expire by Republicans because Republicans did not have enough votes in the 2001 Senate to break a real filibuster.

There's irony in there somewhere.

Reid Receives Ransom Note From GOP

By The Reverend Published: December 2, 2010

Occasionally our political process, either by accident or design, leads us to a moment of clarity. We're at one now.

GOP senate minority leader, Droopy Dawg McConnell (R-KY), sent a letter to Harry Reid (D-NV) bearing all 42 GOP senators signatures. The letter stated that every senate Republican would vote to block ALL lame duck legislation until the wealthiest Americans get their low income tax rates extended.

All The News Government Deems Fit To Print

By The Reverend Published: December 1, 2010

At the beginning of 2004, the New York Times confronted the Bush White House with what they had found out about Bush and Cheney's secret program of vacuuming up all Americans' electronic communications....and doing so without judicial warrants. This was a clear and massive violation of not only the 4th amendment but also the strict FISA guidelines passed in 1978 in the wake of similar Nixon-era governmental abuses. The abuses continue today.

2004 was a critical re-election year for The Decider and his Dick, and so the Bush administration told the NY Times that they wanted the Times to hold off for awhile on printing the doubt based on their "national security" concerns. It's always national security concerns.
