Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony and other top Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles officials concealed child molestation incidents by priests from law enforcement as late as 1987, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.
Citing newly released internal Church records, the report says that Archbishop Roger Mahony, who is now retired, and his top adviser on child sex abuse cases, Monsignor Thomas Curry, worked with other Church officials in 1987 to send priests accused of abuse out of state to avoid prosecution.
Prosecutors are stating that Cardinal Mahoney, and other guilty parties, won't be prosecuted or punished because the statute of limitations has run out on these unforgivable crimes.
Glenn Greenwald recommends Frontline's "The Untouchables", which documents the fact that 5 years removed from the most severe economic collapse in my lifetime, not one person responsible for the financial fraud which caused the collapse has been prosecuted.
Numerous documents prove that executives at leading banks, credit agencies, and mortgage brokers were falsely touting assets as sound that knew were junk: the very definition of fraud. As former Wall Street analyst Yves Smith wrote in her book ECONned: "What went on at Lehman and AIG, as well as the chicanery in the CDO [collateralized debt obligation] business, by any sensible standard is criminal." Even lifelong Wall Street defender Alan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve Chair, said in Congressional testimony that "a lot of that stuff was just plain fraud."
In 2009 the fraudulent actions of drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline led directly to the deaths of 304 patients using the drug Avandia. Last July....
....the Department of Justice reported a $3 billion settlement with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for, among other things, withholding information about the safety of its diabetes medication Avandia and for marketing several additional drugs, including the antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin, for unapproved uses. GSK also pled guilty to three criminal counts.
Glaxo committed outright, pre-meditative fraud. People died as a result. The charges were criminal charges.....
For these charges, Glaxo will pay a criminal fine of $1 billion. The other $2 billion will go toward fines for a civil settlement involving the sales and marketing of several of the company’s other drugs, including the asthma drug Advair. Glaxo did not admit to any wrongdoing in the civil case.
Glaxo's criminal action killed people. Yet, no one at Glaxo went to jail. Glaxo admitted no wrongdoing. Fraud pays. The fine imposed by the government was large but easily absorbed by a giant corporation like Glaxo whose Avandia product alone created revenues of $10.4 billion over the years covered in the settlement.
Corporate servants tell us repeatedly that if our nation doesn't do something about entitlements and the entitlement mentality in god's country....we will surely decline as a world-leading power.
Where I disagree is over the identity of the entitled. When corporate servants talk about those who feel entitled....they are most often referring to the poor on food stamps, the single mother receiving government assistance, the elderly poor on Medicaid, or the unemployed on UI. Sometimes, when the corporate servants are feeling feisty, they include the geezers on Social Security and Medicare......acting all, you know, entitled, to program benefits they paid into all of their lives. Greedy geezers.
But when I talk about the entitled....and when all of us talk of the entitled....we should be directing our attention towards the wealthy, the powerful and the connected who actually are entitled.
Entitled to cover up their crimes so that they can't be prosecuted and then entitled to statutes of limitation laws to prevent prosecution after the crimes are uncovered. Entitled to break the law, repeatedly, and never be held accountable for their actions. Entitled to deceive millions, killing some, to make profit. Entitled to carefully plan and propagate fraud....and then entitled to a bailout-loan when caught. Those are the few in our nation who are the truly entitled.
Such entitlement is reserved only for those who are very wealthy, very famous, or very well connected. These fortunate few....the truly entitled....are making a complete mockery of what greasy politicians call 'the rule of law'....or better yet, these truly entitled illustrate perfectly our double standard when it comes to being "equal before the law."
So yeah....I'm all in in support of entitlement reform. Or, as the SnowBilly would say, "you betcha."
I'm all in favor of reforming an entitlement system which holds 99% of all Americans to one legal standard.....and holds the other 1% to a different standard. That's a corrupt and disgusting system in need of reform.
