From the Way Back Machine....
''From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August.'' Andrew H. Card Jr., White House chief of staff, on why the Bush administration waited until September to press for public support of its Iraq policy.
We know that Syria has been on the neo-con list for U.S. military remodeling for over a decade. The same was true of Iraq in 2002 when Bush regime chief of staff Andy Card issued his "fall marketing" approach to selling imperialistic wars. What was odd then, and is odd now, is the view of the executive branch that....war must be marketed.....like new cars or perfume.
I think we should find that odd......that U.S. leaders must "sell" us on attacking countries who pose no threat to the "homeland." Here I agree with another blogger who said something like.... 'if violence is not obvious as a response, violence should not be the response.'
I think that's right. It was obvious on 9-11 that violence would be part of our "answer." Not true in the case of Iraq. And again, not true in the case of Syria.
Thus the need for a fall marketing campaign. The Bushies, like any New York ad agency, pulled out all the stops and full-court-pressed the American people and Congress into "buying" their 2002 fall war-line. One trillion dollars, 4500 U.S. military deaths, hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis, and ten years later.....the nation of Iraq is a goddamn disaster.
Now, regrettably, Obama's team has a new fall war-product to market. Violence is not so obvious as the proper response to muddied information over WMD and who used them in Syria. Not so "slam dunky", you know, like how Iraq was before we turned it into the Garden of Eden. And so, the box that Obama is packing the "attack Syria" product in is stamped with the words....."some marketing required."
If anyone is sensing a bit of deja-vu with this Syria deal....it's because we have been here before.
"Fixing the intelligence to fit the policy", ala the 2002 Downing Street Memo concerning Iraq, appears to now be an integral part of our American Century middle eastern policy. The world's energy oligarchs couldn't be more pleased.
Setting aside the likelihood of "stovepiping" and/or "cherry picking" of intelligence for a minute......this time there's competing intelligence with this report released last week.....
Russia says a deadly March sarin attack in an Aleppo suburb was carried out by Syrian rebels, not forces loyal to President Bashar Assad, and it has delivered a 100-page report laying out its evidence to the United Nations.
It is very important to note that the most recent alleged sarin attack in Syria came on August 21, the very day UN inspectors arrived in Syria to investigate earlier claims of chemical gas use there. Why Assad would launch a sarin gas attack the very day inspectors arrived to investigate possible sarin gas use......has yet to be answered by the war marketers.
Also important to know before the war marketing blitz covers us in propaganda.....is how "certain" many were earlier in the year that Assad was using chemical agents. The recent Russian study released last week contradicts this June consensus.....
Evidence that chemical agents — likely sarin nerve gas — were used in Syria has existed for months, with France, the United Kingdom, Israel, and Turkey all certain that they had been utilized under the authority of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against the opposition. The United States remained the lone hold-out in fully embracing that theory, citing a lack of certainty over the chain of custody of the evidence.
These earlier claims resulted in ramping up U.S. assistance to Syrian "rebels"......even though many of these alleged rebels align themselves with the "terrorists".....the same guys U.S. leaders assure us that the "free" world has been warring against since 9-11.
Even though intelligence officials state that evidence of Assad's people using sarin gas on August 21 is no "slam dunk" case.....and that there is still "reasonable doubt" concerning who actually used sarin gas.....the fall war-product marketing blitz to attack the Assad regime begins in earnest tomorrow night with Obama addressing the nation ahead of congressional debate and a vote to symbolically "punish" the dictator.
Be very skeptical.
