Remember when Democrats repeatedly threatened to shut the government down if Medicare Plan D wasn't defunded and/or repealed? Remember when Democrats mocked Bush and the Republicans for making seniors even more "dependent" on government with Plan D? Remember when House Democrats made a national laughing stock out of the "donut hole", a provision in Plan D which assists seniors with the costs of pharmaceuticals until total yearly costs reach $2700 or so.....and then seniors must pay out of pocket entirely until costs exceed around $5000?
No, I don't remember Democrats doing those things either. Because they didn't.....do those things.
You see, Democrats back in 2003 didn't worry about who would receive credit for passing Plan D. Republicans had the majority in Congress and had every right to pass the new Big Entitlement program. Even though Plan D was far from perfect, Democrats did not mount a national campaign to repeal Plan D nor threaten multiple times to shut the government down if Plan D was not repealed.
Obama, from Friday's press conference.....
"I think the really interesting question is why it is that my friends in the other party have made the idea of preventing these people from getting health care their holy grail."
"The one unifying principle in the Republican Party at the moment is making sure that 30 million people don't have health care;...."
"The idea that you would shut down the government unless you prevent 30 million people from getting health care is a bad idea."
"There are going to be things where we say, you know what? We should have thought of that earlier, or this would work a little bit better or this needs an adjustment. That was true of Social Security. That was true of Medicare. That was true of the children's health insurance program. That was true of the prescription drug program part D that was rolled out by a Republican president and supported by Republicans who are still in the House of Representatives."
"It's just become an ideological fixation."
Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ted Cruz (R-TX), with assists from the militants on Fox, redstate.com, and AM hate-radio, have set the "shut the government down" dial to eleven these last few weeks, threatening to crash the U.S. and world economy....if'n Obamacare is not fully repealed.
Even though a few less-insane Republicans have pointed out to the wild-eyed Repealers that the GOP does not control 60 votes in the Senate, let alone 67 votes to override a presidential veto,......leaving any Obamacare repeal attempt totally impotent.....the Ideologically Fixated GOP militants press on grasping at anything that has the potential to do further damage to the economy as we approach another midterm election season.
Obama's words from the Friday presser on GOP dead-ender attempts to repeal the ACA were not only accurate but appropriate. Though Republicans mumble at times the words "market-based approach" to solving the national problem of the uninsured......it has been "market-based approachs" which have driven the costs of healthcare and healthcare insurance beyond the reach of tens of millions of working Americans. The fact is, as Obama said, Republicans don't even bother anymore with mumbling "market based appraochs" when they rail against Obamacare.
Repealing Obamacare for Republicans is simply and only an "ideological fixation." A rallying cry for the anti-Obamaites. Obamacare has become the bonfire where restless libertarian and "severe" conservatives continue to dance around like clueless primitives hoping to make it rain. An ideological fixation...indeed.
One other point today on Obamacare. The Repealers often....and I mean often.....spout that Obamacare is "overwhelmingly hated" or "despised" by the American people. Those claims are simply not true, nor have they ever been true.
In every poll I've seen on Obamacare, a majority opposes the plan. But in that majority opposition is a subset of Americans who oppose the law because it isn't progressive enough. When those progressives are factored out......the nation is evenly split over Obamacare.....not "overwhelmingly opposed."
Moreover, a good portion of those polled are totally confused about Obamacare. For that confusion we can thank the likes of Mensa member and former 1/2 term "death panel" Governor.....Sarah Palin, via "pull the plug on grandma" genius GOP Senator Chuck Grassley and the, yes, "vast right wing conspiracy" echo-chamber machine which is today's conservative "news" media.
No, minority Republicans cannot repeal Obamacare.....no matter how loudly they shout otherwise. Calls from conservative extremists to the contrary are only the evidence proving Obama's point.
Today's Republicans, with their white-majority-politics, are only throwing a lengthy and boring tantrum over Obamacare in the hope that the midterm magic trick of 2010 can be resurrected out of the ashes of the GOP's dismal failure in the 2012 election.
All of this.....all of it.....in order to deny millions of poor working Americans from obtaining healthcare insurance.
