Remember Shirley Sherrod? She was the Agricultural Department employee targeted by the....umm....more excitable.....elements in the conservative media propaganda regime.
Within Sherrod's speech which Breitbart's monsters so wickedly edited to oust the Agricultural Department employee and embarrass the Kenyan Imposter sitting in the White House, Ms. Sherrod stated a profound truth. A truth about how American power works.
Much has been written about the Republican "wars" on minorities, women, and gays. And rightfully so. However, I would suggest that these conservative "wars" on minorities, women and gays are only Republican "wars" of political necessity. In other words, conservative "war" against liberty and equality for minorities and gays......conservative "war" against female autonomy.....are but secondary smokescreen wars to hide the real conservative war.
Sherrod said that while working with the white farmer, she realized that the social war we’ve been having isn’t about race but economic inequity.
“Y’all, it’s about poor versus those who have,’’ Sherrod said in her speech. “It’s really about those who have versus those who don’t, you know. And they could be black; and they could be white; they could be Hispanic. And it made me realize then that I needed to work to help poor people — those who don’t have access the way others have.’’
If conservative harpies rail over contraception in health insurance exchange offerings. If conservatives jump up and down about "amnesty" for "illegals". If conservatives endorse legislation relegating gay Americans to permanent second class citizenship.....it's only for the purpose of keeping the wild and crazy elements of the Republican coalition together to win elections.
Conservatives don't really hate autonomous women. Conservatives don't really hate blacks or Hispanics. Conservatives don't even really hate gays. Waging political battles against those demographic groups isn't personal....you understand.....it's just political. Republican officials must at least pretend to be in favor of waging actual war against those demographic groups in order to hold enough conservative voters together to be competitive in elections.
But the real war from the conservative side is, and always has been, the war between those who have and those who don't. Democratic officials, especially those who embrace neo-liberalism (liberal goals can be attained through corporate control) are also guilty of waging war against the have nots on behalf of the haves.
In our current embarrassing national media discourse over deficits and debt, the perpetual war of the haves against the have-nots is front and center. And it should sicken every honest American.
In an historic economic downturn when interest rates are at record lows, inflation is in check, and unemployment is still close to 8% with millions more Americans having already stopped looking for employment.....in a period when average American families have fallen back to the middle 90's when it comes to net worth...in a period when consumers do not have sufficient liquidity or credit to create higher national demand for goods and services.....is the specific moment that the Very Serious People have decided to take the opportunity to take more from the have-nots en route to giving more to the haves.
Whether it's GOP governors refusing to increase Medicaid rolls made possible by Obamacare or whether it's the Village VSP's trying to talk viewers and readers into the wisdom of throwing 65 and 66 year old Americans to the private insurance wolves through their Big Idea to raise the Medicare eligibility age....it's all part and parcel of the same....authentic war of the haves against the have-nots.
In Ohio, Wisconsin and now, Michigan.....dark GOP forces have been jihadding their asses off in a conspiratorial effort to lower wages for the sake of.....surprise....the haves. Right-to-work-for-less battles are meant to suppress wages so that the haves can make more profit. Outsourcing is for the same purpose. "Free" trade agreements....and a host of other have versus have-not battle tactics....all vindicate what Ms. Shirley Sherrod came to realize while working at the Agricultural Department.
The real, genuine,....no hyperbole or metaphor.....war being waged inside America is the war of those who are already very rich against all the rest of us.
Corrupt corporate media is currently obsessed....or demonically possessed....over deficits and debt at a time when all that we should be talking about is how the government should stimulate the economy with new stimulus legislation. New spending. At the same time, those same VSP's are clutching pearls over some imaginary "fiscal cliff" ahead if elected officials decide to do nothing to stop Bush-era tax cuts from expiring and agreed-upon spending cuts enacted.
Notice, these Very Serious People were against Kenynesianism before they were for it.
If these players were really serious about deficits and debt, then they should welcome the $4 trillion in deficit-reducing revenue made available by ending the Bush-era tax rates. But these players are not serious about debt and deficits....and never have been. They have only been using the language and scare tactics of fiscal cliffs and deficit reduction to lock in (and then lower) tax rates for the haves.
In summary: what we have been witnessing since the election only illustrates and informs the real war going on inside America.....not the war against women, gays and minorities....but the war that those "wars" make possible.....the war Shirley Sherrod rightly described as..."about the poor versus those who have."
