"For these reasons, today we are respectfully requesting that customers no longer bring firearms into our stores or outdoor seating areas—even in states where "open carry" is permitted—unless they are authorized law enforcement personnel," Mr. Schultz wrote in the letter.
"We're not anti- or pro-gun, but we don't believe guns should be part of the Starbucks experience."
That's from Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz.
Open carry became a potential problem for Starbucks after both sides of the gun regulations debate began focusing protest activities in and around Starbucks stores.
The Patriots at the NRA, the compassionate and caring folks that they are, thought it would be a good idea the first week of August to encourage Starbucks customers to hold special events across the country......including.....
Gun advocates have designated Aug. 9 as “Starbucks Appreciation Day” and planned gatherings in coffee shops across the country, including Newtown, Connecticut.
Understandably, not everyone appreciated the NRA's Starbucks Appreciation Day.....
OFFICIAL STATEMENT: MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA ASKS STARBUCKS TO DENOUNCE AND PROHIBIT THE ARMED RALLIES TO BE HELD BY GUN ADVOCATES IN STORES NATIONWIDE ON FRI., AUG. 9
They wanted the coffee giant to denounce the appreciation day and bar gun-carrying customers from entering Starbucks....with their guns.
Starbucks didn't really want to be caught in the middle of this disagreement/protest....and the company certainly didn't want to scare people away from their stores....whether they were in favor of gun regulations or not. Thus, the "respectful request" by Starbucks' CEO for customers to refrain from carrying guns into Starbucks stores.
This could have also played a role in the company's request....
A Florida woman accidentally shot her friend in the leg while waiting in line at a Starbucks on Saturday. (May of this year)
However, Starbucks also came under fire from the right this March over an argument which had nothing to do with guns.....
(The National Organization for Marriage) decided to organize a boycott, dubbed the "Dump Starbucks" campaign, because the company's corporate leadership actively supported efforts to legalize same-sex marriage.
This is not like the Chick-Fil-A demonstrations where conservative defenders of the religious right rushed to "demonstrate" their solidarity with bigots by lining up around the block to buy greasy chicken sandwiches in a show of support. Starbucks officials didn't ask for their stores to become a focal point of the gun debate....
Pro-gun activists have used our stores as a political stage for media events misleadingly called 'Starbucks Appreciation Days' that disingenuously portray Starbucks as a champion of 'open carry.' To be clear: we do not want these events in our stores.
The question now becomes whether or not customers of Starbucks who are mostly against gun regulations will boycott the nationwide coffee stores in response to CEO Shultz's respectful request....or whether no-to-gun-regulations Starbucks customers will continue to provoke, intimidate and frighten customers in their quest to normalize the presence of loaded military-style weaponry everywhere.
I've written before and I'll no doubt write again, how, personally, I think it is a huge....HUGE....mistake to lead American society down the road of ubiquitous open-carry. If half of customers in shopping, dining, and retail establishments are openly carrying guns.......I don't want to be in those establishments.....period.
I don't think I'm the Lone Ranger on that either.
So, here's my warning to those who support more open carry while opposing gun regulations, like universal background checks......There is no faster way to do damage to the nation's economy than to frighten and intimidate more Americans into staying home rather than going out into the marketplace.
Republicans and conservatives who are working hard this week to damage the economy through the threat of shutting down the government and refusing to lift the debt ceiling should take note of The Reverend's warning and respond accordingly.
By including an amendment to their shut-down-government legislation which provides for open carry in all establishments, and in every state.....with no exceptions.
If blocking the CR and defaulting on the debt doesn't sufficiently wreck the national economy......doesn't slow down consumer spending or result in sufficient numbers of newly unemployed......then perhaps the presence of open carry sidearms in malls, grocery stores and whatnot will do the trick.
