I've never believed that the NRA or the loudest proponents of unlimited weaponry ownership have been motivated by fealty to the 2nd amendment. I could be mistaken, but I don't think so. Instead, the NRA is simply doing the will of corporate gun manufacturers and sellers.....protecting, promoting and defending corporate gun makers constitutional rights to make endless profit.
Okay, maybe making profit is not a constitutional right...but you know what I'm getting at. Corporations, by their very nature....not being, you know, people and all,.....have no soul, no emotions, no humanity.....no heart. Corporations, sorry Mitt, are actually not "people." Instead, corporations are cold, calculating, machines, ever-focused on making ever more profits. Nothing wrong with that....as long as we're willing to recognize it for what it is.
The will of corporations and the will of the people are two separate and distinct entities. What's probably always been true...but is absolutely true today in the U.S.....is that today the will of the people seems to always lose out to the will of corporations.
This refusal to carry out the will of the people was painfully true during late 2008, early 2009...when our largest corporate banks plus AIG were tenderly and lovingly bailed out (complete with bonuses) against the will of the people....who actually wanted some accountability from the scheming, skimmer industry which wrecked our economy. But the will of the financial industry leaders trumped the will of the American people.
This was true, for example, during Obamacare negotiations. It didn't matter that the will of the people included a public option plan in insurance exchanges....big medical/pharma/insurance corporations did not want a public option.....so we didn't get one. The will of the people denied again in favor of more profits for soulless and heartless corporations.
And the same is happening again, now, with guns. President Obama, as guilty as anyone when it comes to not carrying out the will of the people, got it right yesterday when he said this about what 'the people' agree on...
“I believe most [gun owners] agree that If America worked harder to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, there would be fewer atrocities like the one that occurred in Newtown,” Obama said, but warned that “there will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists, publicly warning of a tyrannical all-out assault on liberty” to “gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves.”
Obama's sentiment is reflected in this finding....
According to a 2012 poll conducted by GOP pollster Frank Luntz for Mayors Against Illegal Guns, 74 percent of NRA members support mandatory background checks for all gun purchases, a position that the NRA has stridently opposed. “There’s a big difference between the NRA’s rank and file and the NRA’s Washington lobbyists, who live and breathe for a different purpose,” Mark Glaze, the executive director of the gun control group, said.
That "different purpose", of course, is the heartless quest for ever-more profits for corporate gun makers and sellers.
Amid ongoing debate about U.S. gun violence in America, a new poll from the Associated Press-GfK shows that nearly six in 10 Americans favor more stringent gun laws, while majorities also support strengthening background checks and limiting the violence depicted in video games.
The will of the people seems clear. But the will of corporate gun makers and sellers is not the same as the will of the people. The will of the corporate controllers is witnessed in Senator Marco Rubio's comments after Obama's announcement....
"Nothing the president is proposing would have stopped the massacre at Sandy Hook," said a statement by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, considered an up-and-coming GOP leader. "President Obama is targeting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens instead of seriously addressing the real underlying causes of such violence."
Rubio is the leading contender in the GOP for the 2016 presidential contest. Looks like young Marco comprehends the will of corporate leaders, but not so much the will of the people.
On the morning after the Newtown evil I wrote a depressing blog post stating my belief that, in spite of the horror at that elementary school, nothing would change as far as passing new restrictions on Americans owning military-grade weapons. I still think the same thing one month later.
The will of the people no longer matters in the U.S., if it ever really has. The will of huge corporate interests have replaced the 'will of the people' in America's democracy. That means that nothing can be done, no laws passed, no changes made, that could even remotely hinder profit-making for corporate interests who now dictate the rules for 'we the people.'
If Americans ever were to "take their country back".....they would be taking it back from powerful corporate interests who, over decades, have taken it away from the people.
