A couple of weeks ago, WAPO columnist George Will typed a rancid opinion piece echoing the Republican Party's total disrespect for our nation's female citizens. Akron's only newspaper didn't reprint Will's screed against female citizens....even though Will's columns often grace the op-ed page of the Beacon. Will is just such a "civil" columnist.
To state that George Will is an annoying little overpaid prick with a bow tie, a wide vocabulary and a chip on his narrow shoulders is stating the obvious.....but as a "moderate" intellectual from the right hand side of the dial, I think his misogynistic column speaks to the obsession that corporate media has with some illusive bipartisan center.
Colleges and universities are being educated by Washington and are finding the experience excruciating. They are learning that when they say campus victimizations are ubiquitous (“micro-aggressions,” often not discernible to the untutored eye, are everywhere), and that when they make victimhood a coveted status that confers privileges, victims proliferate.
At first, I thought Will was referring to Tea Party conservatives. The making "victimhood a coveted status" part .....kind of threw me off track. But no, George Will was actually referring to females on campus who are sexually assaulted.
Will is the type of guy whom civility-and-centrist loving media often celebrate as the kind of person we need more of in our national political discourse. A reasonable person, not known for his shrillness. A person who is qualified to speak on behalf of the sensible center......the Goldilocks columnist, so to speak.
Set aside the smugness, the arrogance, and the prickishness for a second....not an easy thing to do, I know.....and digest what it is that Will is arguing. College attending females "covet" the "status" that being sexually assaulted confers on them as "victims." No, the WAPO columnist didn't argue that college females coveted being sexually assaulted.....instead, Will, claims college females desire, long for, covet the victimhood status and alleged "entitlements" sexual assault victims are awarded.
You see, Mr. Will doesn't like it that his favorite political party is constantly being accused of waging a war on women. So, in Will's inimitable style, he not-so-slyly accuses college females of coveting sexual assault victimhood......as only part of his "provocative" argument bashing, surprise, progressivism.
....academia’s progressivism has rendered it intellectually defenseless now that progressivism’s achievement, the regulatory state, has decided it is academia’s turn to be broken to government’s saddle.
That "thought" pegs the WTF-meter needle.
Holding males accountable on college campuses when they attempt to sexually assault females is evidence that "liberal academia" is now "defenseless" against "the regulatory state."
Now, I suppose it is possible that Mr. Will was in a hurry when writing his column. Perhaps Will hurriedly assembled his piece, quickly resorting to conservative talking points....the regulatory state, academia's progressivism, sense of entitlement, etc.
It is salutary that academia, with its adversarial stance toward limited government and cultural common sense, is making itself ludicrous. Academia is learning that its attempts to create victim-free campuses — by making everyone hypersensitive, even delusional, about victimizations — brings increasing supervision by the regulatory state that progressivism celebrates.
Hey, it is hard work (increasing supervision) to keep college males from sexually assaulting college females....and anyway, what are these "liberal academicians" trying to do, "create" a "victim free campus?" Goddamn tyrants.
Yes, Will's column is offensive....and particularly so towards women. But remeber....George Will is a thoughtful, reasonable columnist to be celebrated for his "provocative" writing style. A favorite columnist of the oh-so-civil Beacon Journal publishers.
Now, the unvarnished deconstruction.
To reasonable George, U.S. universities are a hellhole of liberalism. Progressives, in general, as Romney portrayed them, will never take responsibility for their own lives and, therefore, are always "coveting" special victim status from their Uncle Santa....all the while blaming others for their victimhood.
To give an extra-poisonous aroma to the partisan bile that fills every George Will column, the bowtied one claims that sexually assaulted college females are so depraved by progressivism's evil.....they now covet being a victim of sexual assault. Being sexually assaulted, according to reasonable George, is now what college females PREFER. The "entitlements" that accompany being sexually assaulted are similar in nature, at least in Will's head, to poor, hungry minorities who refuse to take responsibility for their own lives.....who sign up for the "entitlement" of food stamps or unemployment compensation.
To George Will, college female sexual assault victims can't wait to be a victim of sexual assault so they can get "free stuff" from the regulatory state.
So, see? Will isn't really breaking any new ground in his highly offensive column, is he? Will, just like a majority of conservatives, thinks half the country's citizens are worthless sluggards who feel entitled to free stuff from the federal government and only vote for Democrats so they can get that free stuff. It's just that with Will's highly partisan screed, college females who are sexually violated against their...ahem...will....have now been tossed into the 47% pile.
Oh, and hey....good luck, you civil conservatives, on winning over the female vote.
