Great Sense of Humor

By The Reverend Published: December 31, 2008

One characteristic of this year's presidential campaign was the non-stop attempt by McCain-Palin to rally the Republican base. John McCain, allegedly a "maverick" who often broke with his party, chose Sarah Palin as his running mate in order to excite GOP-base voters enough to come out and vote for the elephant ticket.

Pardon Me....Pardon Me Not

By The Reverend Published: December 26, 2008

Upon hearing of George W. Bush's pardoning of Issac Toussie on Tuesday, then revoking that pardon on reaction was: "It figures, this guy simply can't do anything right...not even issuing pardons." The gang that couldn't shoot straight...ever. But now, after doing some reading, it seems that the Toussie pardon/non-pardon is just more of the same old political machinations that have dominated the last 8 years.

Briefly, Issac Toussie pled....

Celebration Time

By The Reverend Published: December 24, 2008

The celebration of the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere, which begins every year this time in December, has gone on for as long as man walked upright and kept track of days. What we call an ancient tradition. The fact that religious sects, over centuries, have co-brokered this yearly celebration, molding something natural and obvious into something supernatural and not obvious at all, does not detract from the truth that the northern hemisphere of earth still reaches it's furthest distance from the life-giving sun around this time of December every year...and marks the beginning of a new life-giving cycle.

"Unto You This Day, A Bailout Is Born"

By The Reverend Published: December 22, 2008

It's the holiday season. The season of giving. Giving, specifically, to those who don't need much of anything. Yes, you read that correctly. American governmental leaders joined in the "giving" festivities this year....and they were so excited about the season.....that they started celebrating early in October. The presents were stacked oh-so-high, it took awhile to unwrap all of them.

Now they're unwrapped and....we're all beholding the glory. Who needs dusty old peasant stories from Bethlehem this season, when stories of the rich and recently-bailed-out famous.....are so uplifting and hope inspiring?

Obama, Faith-Basing & Rick Warren

By The Reverend Published: December 20, 2008

President-elect Barack Obama has caught hell this week from progressives over inviting Pastor Rick Warren to give the Inaugural Invocation next month. While I'm no fan of Warren, Obama's invite doesn't really surprise me.

The new president claims he is a believing Christian. I take him at his word. Christians, by definition, all believe in the same Jesus. Christians may disagree on many finer points of Christianity.....but they agree on the big doctrine...Jesus. Obama, a Christian, has invited Rick Warren, another Christian, to offer the opening prayer at Obama's inauguration. Kind of ecumenical. Brothers in Christ, and all that.

2008 "Rubbing Our Faces In It" Tour

By The Reverend Published: December 19, 2008

For many years I have held the belief that George W. Bush is a cynical, burnt-out, ex-drunk whose DNA predestines him to destroy everything he involves himself in. I still hold that belief today. This is a man who detests government for the people, in all it's expressions, and has sought, for 8 years now, to destroy it wherever it could be found. History will prove me right.

But I must say something about the current "legacy" or "victory" tour, that W., Dick and Condi have been traveling on in recent weeks. To be expected, the White House warriors have been trying to rewrite history by telling all the old lies as well as making up some new ones for this final "tour". Yesterday, however, George gave me cause to rename his victory tour.... "Rubbing Our Faces In It One More Time...08 Tour".

Is There Good Reason For Torture?

By The Reverend Published: December 18, 2008

It has been interesting to listen to the response in the media, whatever little there has been, to the Senate Armed Services Committee report of it's inquiry into the torture inflicted upon detainees in U.S. custody.

Perception Of Value

By The Reverend Published: December 17, 2008

Over the last 10 years or so, Expert, Experienced and Highly Educated money people created new forms of mortgages. Alan Greenspan and Robert Rubin, two Expert, Experienced and Highly Educated money guys, thought it was a good idea for financial institutions to create these new "products."

Interest only mortgages, adjustable rate mortgages, sub-prime mortgages, balloon payment mortgages, etc, became common place. These were, by their nature, riskier than traditional mortages.

It Started With Reagan

By The Reverend Published: December 13, 2008

It now appears that George W. Bush will try to shore up his totally failed presidency by doing the right thing vis-a-vis the Big Three automakers. It seems he will tap the exisiting TARP funds to bridge-loan $14 BILLION for GM and Chrysler. Good for him. Lord knows there hasn't been much to praise during the Bush-Cheney regime. W., if indeed he finds a way to loan carmakers the money, will prove that he is at least more sensible and humane than the red-necks-from-red-states in the Senate.

From last night's Countdown, David Shuster spoke with Thom Hartmann from Air America Radio about this issue. The 5 minute clip below is good throughout, however, it's the last 30 seconds where Hartmann strikes the nail on it's head...

GOP Won't Help Carmakers

By The Reverend Published: December 11, 2008

On October 1, 2008, just a little over 2 months ago, Senate Republicans joined Senate Democrats in passing a bailout bill for the financial industry. The Senate vote was 74-25. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson called the vote a "strong bipartisan vote."

Paulson also said this about the Senate vote....

Yesterday brought us a new scandal for the media to pore over. I've chosen to call it Blago-Gate, because soon-to-be-former-Illinois-governor Rod Blagojevich's name is...I don't know....too difficult to spell or pronounce. You know, those ethnic names and all.

The official charges against the Illinois governor, all 76 pages, are found here. Lots of dirty words are included, just like I like it. The best blog coverage of Blago-Gate is found here.

Media...Big Part Of The Problem

By The Reverend Published: December 9, 2008

1) The reason Americans never had the Bushian wool pulled away from their eyes until after the Katrina catastrophe was because of our corrupt main media. Main media writers and teevee journalists are given access to the powerful, but always and only, if those granting the access are also granted anonymity. Those folks in positions of power have an agenda to push....that's a given for those in power....and the way that agenda is advanced is through what I would call the media's "cap and trade" practice. Media people "trade" access to "inside information" from the powerful in return for the "cap" of anonymity. With this terribly incestuous dynamic, the powerful are able to successfully advance their agenda, media members gain access to what they call "exclusive content", even though this "content" is nothing more than stenography....and the American people?.....well....they remain uninformed or choose.

To see a clear example of this dynamic at work, take the time to read this.

Obama's Place In The Center For Moderate GOP'ers

By The Reverend Published: December 5, 2008

The Bush presidency is snail-pacing towards the exits, predictably, leaving revisionistic slime all along the way as W. attempts to dress up the pig that is the most criminal administration in American history. However, incurious George has done something, while wrecking the nation and it's standing in the world, which I will always be thankful for.....he's singlehandedly shattered the Republican Party.

So thanks for that, George.

W.'s Effed-Up "Right of Conscience"

By The Reverend Published: December 4, 2008

Radical fundamentalist Islamics want to impose Islamic religious laws everywhere they gather. Great danger to the world....wingnuts tell us. Surely, no one wants American women to be forced to wear bhurkas...right? Yeah, those Middle Eastern religious nuts make such a big deal about moral conscientiousness, establishing medieval laws forbidding a woman's face from being seen by a man in public. Islamic men are only fighting for their "right of conscience" to not be lured into sexual misconduct by the sight of a woman's face in public. Not sexual discrimination or denial of women's rights....oh,'s just morally objectionable...that's all.

Sure glad America isn't like those Muslim countries where radical "rights of conscience" prevail in society....

Kids Puking After Gorging On Candy

By The Reverend Published: December 3, 2008

Truth is a rare commodity on teevee news programs. Truth, particularly economic truth, is never in the interests of corporate sponsors.....that's why so much time and effort is spent on creating perceptions. On last night's Rachel Maddow Show (MSNBC 9PM), viewers were treated to a few minutes of truth about American workers. Leo Gerard, United Steelworkers International President, answers Rachel's question of whether the auto industry is being treated differently than the financial industry regarding financial rescue plans, and if so, why.....
