Fresh off the "scare-the-hell-out-of-'em-again-so-they'll-let-us-burn-the-Constitution" FISA update bill passed by Congress this past weekend comes a renewed effort to cash in on a bit of resurrected
The man leading the Homeland Security Department, Michael Chertoff, who started the ball rolling weeks ago with his gastrointestinal clairvoyance, aka "gut feeling", is back with more scary stuff. Nothing new, mind you....just like his "gut feeling" was based on nothing new. But because his basically factless fearmongering worked so well with the gullible and inexcusably spineless Democrats last time, Chertoff probably figured, why not.
So Chertoff steps forward....and lies....hell, Democrats and Americans won't know any differently.
"Clearly, the effort to put explosives in sports bottles was a reaction to what we had done with respect to other kinds of explosives, and...we're going to be back and forth with terrorists on this kind of cat-and-mouse process for years to come," Chertoff said. Link
From an August 11, 2006 L.A.Times article....
During the mid-1990s, the U.S. took into custody two Kuwaiti men who had devised the technical plan for Operation Bojinka... the name for a plan to blow up a large number of jumbo jets over the Pacific. In a test, the perpetrators in 1994 blew up an unsuspecting Japanese businessman in his seat on a Philippine domestic flight by wiring a device using a watch and liquid explosive disguised in a contact-lens case. This proved to the terrorists that they could get explosives aboard undetected.
Thanks to Philippine intelligence, the U.S. eventually arrested the two terrorists, Abdul Hakim Murad and Ramzi Ahmed Yousef. The two told the CIA about bin Laden's plans to knock down big buildings using planes and blow up airliners using small chemical bombs. That was in 1995. (Yousef was later convicted in the U.S. for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.)
...the TSA has never forbidden the types of liquids it is now temporarily banning, even though it was fully aware of the Bojinka effort and Al Qaeda and bin Laden's penchant for going after targets until he succeeds in bringing them down. Link
Yet just three days ago Michael Chertoff said the plan uncovered a year ago was, "... a reaction to what we had done with respect to other kinds of explosives,...".
It doesn't have to make sense, it just has to be believed. I'm sure if the scare drums are beaten loudly enough, even though the beat will sound like it's out of time and without any sense of rhythm, it will be enough to give communications corporations blanket amnesty for aiding and abetting a criminal president as well as a "surge" extension in Iraq resulting in the deaths of even more American soldiers.
After all, if the 4th amendment can be torn up so quickly on just Chertoff's "gut feeling", just think how far fascist types can get with a total rehashing of a year old "plot" complete with the requisite lies.
Americans SHOULD be afraid, no question,....afraid of the people who are now leading the counrty.
