What Increase In Federal Spending?

By The Reverend Published: May 23, 2012

When you type into the Google search bar the words "Obama massive spending", 23,800,000 entries come up. Republican and conservative deception artists and spin merchants have worked hard the last three years framing the Obama presidency as a big government spender.

The reason for the deception is simple....conservatives and Republicans realized that after the banks and AIG crashed the economy and sent us into the worst economic downturn since the 30's, further tax cuts and deregulations for the top 1% of income earners would be off the table. The depth of the recession would preclude the loss of any further government revenue through more tax giveaways to the already-obscenely wealthy.....and the deregulation of banks, starting in 2000, led directly to our downward economic spiral beginning in 2007. Putting further deregulatory talk in a poor light, as it were.

How could our rich overlords continue to prevail in a toxic atmosphere like the one they had created? Attack the new Democratic president for "massive spending". Alongside "Obama is a socialist, Muslim, non-U.S. citizen and a racist"......Republicans and their Rwanda-Radio media servants went to work, incessantly repeating the fictitious meme that Barack Obama was a "massive government spender" who is destroying America.

You may be surprised to find out that all of the accusations about Obama being some cracked-up "massive spender" who can't spend government money fast enough and who has spent more than Santa plus all the U.S presidents combined in his effort to destroy America and rebuild it into a replica of his Kenyan "birthplace" .....ARE NOT TRUE. I know, shocker, right?

When Mitt the Moldable makes statements like this....

“I will lead us out of this debt and spending inferno.”

...he is making stuff up. He is lying.

The truth...

Although there was a big stimulus bill under Obama, federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since Dwight Eisenhower brought the Korean War to an end in the 1950s.

Did ya' get that? Federal spending under Obama has risen at the slowest pace since the late 1950's. Some freaking "inferno", huh? Federal spending under Obama has increased by 1.4%. Spending increased during Commander Guy Bush's tenure by 7.3% the first term, and 8.1% the second term. St Ronald of the Supply Side increased federal spending by 8.7% his first term and 4.9% his second term. Obama has increased federal spending by 1.4% his first term.

Over Obama’s four budget years, federal spending is on track to rise from $3.52 trillion to $3.58 trillion, an annualized increase of just 0.4%.

Well then, one might ask....why has it been so easy for reptilian apologists for the wealthy and powerful to get away with blaming Obama for "massive spending", when, in reality, Obama has not massively increased federal spending? One part of the answer is what Republicans call "messaging"....and what I call "lying."

Conservatives have never come to grips with and/or accepted the fact that the G.W. Bush presidency was an unmitigated financial disaster. The overlap of debt built into the federal budget during the Bush years is similar to diamonds....you know, they are forever. Two massive tax cuts primarily benefiting the wealthy. Two unpaid-for wars of middle east adventurism and occupation. An unpaid-for Medicare Plan D program....all topped off at the end with the worst economic collapse since Herbert Hoover.....precipitating even more government spending/bailing out at the ass-end of W's second term.

Before Obama had even lifted a finger, the CBO was already projecting that the federal deficit would rise to $1.2 trillion in fiscal 2009. The government actually spent less money in 2009 than it was projected to, but the deficit expanded to $1.4 trillion because revenue from taxes fell much further than expected, due to the weak economy and the emergency tax cuts that were part of the stimulus bill.

In typical projectionist fashion.....shameless conservative and Republican mouthpieces worked hard these past 3+ years to make the public believe that all that Bush-caused debt and spending is actually President Obama's fault. It is a tribute to our loathsome corporate media that so many Americans believe this very obvious lie. Obama is no "massive spender". Obama is not overseeing some "spending inferno".

Instead, during his 3+ years, Obama has increased government spending by the smallest percentage amount since the days of Dwight Eisenhower. If you have been reading at this blog the past almost 5 years....you already knew that.

Why doesn't everyone else?
