Theories abound over why Mitt Romney refuses to release more than one 2010 tax return and one incomplete 2011 tax return.
Some observers suggest that releasing more years of tax returns may show the multi-millionaire candidate paid no federal taxes at all in the year 2009. The market plummeted in 2008.....and Mr. Romney may have actually lost money on paper that year. I don't buy into this theory because one year of zero taxes, especially after an historic financial collapse, is no worse than Romney's owning of multiple offshore tax haven accounts.
Speaking of those offshore accounts.....other opinion makers think the reason Romney refuses to release any further returns is because they just might reveal a motherlode of new offshore tax haven accounts the public hasn't learned of yet. Could be.
We already know that the GOP candidate seeking the presidency has multi offshore tax haven accounts.....in Switzerland and the Caymans.....and that information has not been well received by some voters. If Mitt has tens, or hundreds of millions of dollars more in secretive offshore tax haven accounts the public doesn't know about.....the releasing of that information COULD be politically damaging to the former Bain CEO.
As The Atlantic reports.....another theory floating out there in the intertubes is one involving 'gifting'. Maybe past Romney tax returns would reveal the tricky, gimmicky methods Mitt used to 'gift' millions of dollars to his sons....without those sons paying any taxes. Possible, I suppose. But we will never know for sure unless the GOP candidate releases more than one plus a partial tax return.
What does the candidate say himself about this issue? What is the reason Mitt Romney has given for not releasing many more years worth of tax returns?
"The Obama people keep on wanting more and more and more, more things to pick through, more things for their opposition research to try and make a mountain out of and distort and to be dishonest about."
That's the nutshell of it. The reason Mitt gives for hiding his tax returns from American voters is that it's all President Obama and the Democrats fault. Normally, Mitt would be more than willing to release documents on every dollar he ever earned or bilked others out of.......but doing so would give Obama's minions too many opportunities to distort facts and act dishonestly about the family man and messiah of the 2002 Olympics.
Or what Ann Romney said yesterday on ABC....."We've given all you people need to know." And besides, Mitt gives 10% of every million he earns to the fringe Christian group, the Latter-Day Saints.....so, apparently, he's a good man who is....umm....honest. Well, I guess we could take Ann Romney's word for it....I mean, I guess.
I think it's obvious to almost everyone paying attention that Romney's plan to conceal tax returns from potential voters isn't going to work very well for him. And that is why so many very conservative, conservatives are telling Mitt to release those returns now and put them behind him. Otherwise, his refusal to do so will haunt him all the way to November.
Which leads me to what George Will, no liberal, had to say about all this last weekend.....
Stephanopoulos: "The Obama campaign says that Mitt Romney is lying about Bain Capital, they're hiding something with his tax returns. You heard this debate. On the other side, the Romney campaign saying President Obama is trying to distract from a failed record. Who's winning this argument?"
George Will: "Oh, Mitt Romney is losing at this point in a big way. If something's going to come out, get it out in a hurry."
"...is it not what you call a "real fact" that Mitt Romney gave to the McCain campaign, when it was considering him as a running mate, 23 years of tax returns?"
Mathew Dowd: "....there's obviously something there, because if there was nothing there, he would say, "Have at it." So there's obviously something there that compromises what he said in the past about something."
Granted, these guys are all black belt Villagers......but the theme still rings true. And what is that theme?
Mitt Romney is hiding stuff about his past financial (double?) dealings. Stuff he'd rather not reveal to any potential voters. If he's hiding and stonewalling information about his past.....what would he hide from us as president?
Let's not find out, K?
