If you have been following the U.S. "news" purportedly attempting to explain the tense situation in the Ukraine, and specifically the Crimean peninsula, you have been absorbing the best propaganda 21st century America has to offer. The former Soviets would be envious.
Since before the Sochi Games, U.S. media have been constructing an anti-Putin, anti-Russia narrative for Americans to consume. It is important inside the Empire, as it was during the run-up to invading the sovereign country of Iraq in 2002-2003,....as it was when many key U.S. players worked frantically to pressure Obama into using military force in Syria.....to properly prepare U.S. "news" consumers for the next Empire expansion of "freedom."
If you find that overly cynical....you shouldn't.
Although Americans have never been properly informed about the larger picture-objective of U.S. foreign policy in places like Iraq, Syria, Iran, and even Russia, what we have been informed of has mostly been highly misleading.
For example, were you aware of this....
Last December, (Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria) Nuland reminded Ukrainian business leaders that, to help Ukraine achieve “its European aspirations, we have invested more than $5 billion.” She said the U.S. goal was to take “Ukraine into the future that it deserves,” by which she meant into the West’s orbit and away from Russia’s.
When Ukraine's now-ousted-yet-democratically-elected leader, Yanukovych, rejected that U.S. offer and, instead, accepted a bigger capitalization plan offered by Russia's Putin, U.S. "freedom spreaders" went into action.
Nuland was soon at work planning for “regime change,” encouraging disruptive street protests by personally passing out cookies to the anti-government demonstrators. She didn’t seem to notice or mind that the protesters in Kiev’s Maidan square had hoisted a large banner honoring Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian nationalist who collaborated with the German Nazis during World War II and whose militias participated in atrocities against Jews and Poles.
With the crisis escalating and scores of people killed in the street fighting, Yanukovych agreed to a E.U.-brokered deal that called for moving up scheduled elections and having the police stand down. The neo-Nazi storm troopers then seized the opening to occupy government buildings and force Yanukovych and many of his aides to flee for their lives.
Remember when, just recently, American neo-conservatives were all in favor of sending dangerous weaponry to al-Qaeda types inside Syria in order to bring about "regime change" in that country? Do you recall the amount of pressure neo-conservatives exerted on the Obama administration in an attempt to start yet another "regime changing" military adventure in Syria? Something very similar has also been going on behind the scenes in Ukraine.
If you are sick and tired of being misled and disinformed when it comes to Empire expansion and "regime change" and "freedom spreading", then I encourage you to read two important articles. This piece from The Nation.....and even more helpful, this article from Robert Parry.
It may seem anti-American, or anti-American exceptionalism, or whatever....but as I have explained previously, corporate U.S. media should never be relied upon if you are seeking out the truth. That is particularly true when it comes to foreign policy adventures which include talk of regime change.
Now, if you don't care about our nation's nearly-$1 trillion yearly expenditures to maintain and expand the Empire while America's poor, elderly and vulnerable are told domestic spending cuts are essential....if you don't mind that the Empire never has a problem finding (read:borrowing) billions more to meddle in foreign countries while the middle class at home is being slowly but surely gutted.....then don't waste your time finding out the truth about what is really going on in Ukraine right now.
But if you are like me and have had enough "regime change" and "freedom spreading" bullshite to last you a couple of lifetimes.....then click over to those two articles and learn how and why American audiences of U.S. "professional news" are being played (again).
Finally for today.....why are John McCain, John Kerry, Huck Graham, Mike Rogers, John Bolton, Dick Cheney, and all the usual-suspect neo-conservatives so excitedly bashing Putin and using embarrassing, bellicose, and yet, child-like language trying to influence President Obama to get his war-freak on?
At minimum, the neocons hope that they can neutralize Putin as Obama’s ally in trying to tamp down tensions with Syria and Iran – and thus put American military strikes against those two countries back under active consideration.
You see....Real men go to Tehran.
