As expected, the Chuck Hagel defense secretary nomination hearing was basically void of substance. Lots of Fox-facts were thrown around....lots of tantrums (see: McCain, Johnny Mac) thrown, and a whole bunch of Israeli-love-theater embarrassment.
Hagel, a lifelong Republican, will be confirmed by the Senate. All the bluster and babble and faux-anger by bitter, old, white, conservative male Senators during the hearings yesterday....was just that.
Let's set aside McCain's masturbatory stroking of his own ego over how by-god successful and proper was the Iraqi "surge". McCain is a bitter old loser, coddled by feckless corporate media as a political sugar daddy for so long....that even he now believes in the totally made up bullshite which surrounds his reputation of being Serious.
So much for McCain. He's not worth the time. But when McCain is around throwing tantrums....so too the Huckleberry. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Video here.
The Huck: "You said the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people up here. I'm not an Israeli senator, I'm a U.S. senator. This pressure makes us do dumb things at times."
Do you agree that that is a provocative statement? I can't think of a more provocative thing to say about the relationship between the U.S. and Israel and in the Senate or the Congress than what you said?...
So give me an example of where we've been intimidated by the Israeli-Jewish Lobby to do something done. Give me one example."
Hagel dutifully apologized for having said anything about the Jewish Lobby or the dumb things Congress has done because of fear of repercussions from said Lobby. Huckleberry smugly acknowledged Hagel's apology.
Hagel couldn't quickly come up with a response to the Huck.....but I will.
A huge majority of senators co-signed a letter to President Barack Obama Wednesday defending Israel's actions in the flotilla incident last month and urging the administration to oppose a U.N. resolution critical of the country.
Led by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — and signed by 85 other members of the upper chamber — the letter argues that Israel's blockade of Gaza was both legal and necessary, and that Israeli commandos were acting in self-defense when they landed on the ship.
Israeli commandos intercepted and boarded a Turkish flotilla carrying humanitarian goods to Gaza. No one on board the humanitarian vessels was armed. Israeli soldiers killed nine unarmed people on those ships. The nine killed were shot 30 times in total. Five had gunshot wounds to the head, at least four were shot in the head from both the back and the front. And then there was this...
According to the UNHRC report, six were the victims of "summary executions", including two shot after they were severely injured.
The 85 U.S. senators who signed a letter to President Obama defending Israel's act of murder on those ships.....did a dumb thing. They defended the slaughter of unarmed non-Israelis. It wasn't just a dumb thing to support. It was an unacceptable thing to defend.
Of course Israel has a right to defend itself. But self-defense usually doesn't include murdering the unarmed. When U.S. senators defended the cold-blooded murder of nine non-Israelis in a commando raid on a humanitarian flotilla...yes, Huckleberry, they did a dumb....and reprehensible thing. And, yes, they did it to placate the Jewish or Israeli Lobby.
Why is it that U.S. senators are so easily intimidated into defending Israeli acts of murder?
Because, just as Lindsey Graham was seeking to immunize himself from any criticism from the conservative right by hammering Hagel yesterday in defense of Israel's virtuous murdering....so too most senators.
Yes, part of this is because of Jewish-American campaign money. But most of it is driven by the half of GOP voters who are evangelical Christians. In evangelical "thinking", Israel is still the "chosen" of Yahweh and will play a significant role in their end-of-time scenarios. Political fealty towards Israel...therefore....is an absolute. No other country....not one....is held above all potential reproach as Israel is by U.S. Leaders. Unwavering support of all things Israeli......as if Israel is one of the 50 U.S. states....is the political norm.
Graham is up for re-election in 2014, and he has been noticeably more wingnutty than usual in his recent throwing of red-meat to the evangelical base. He fears a Tea Party challenger from his right. Democrats, on the other hand, are fearful that any criticism directed towards Israel, about anything, will be met with a scorched-earth response by the influential Jewish lobbying machine. They're right.
And so, we get yesterday's embarrassing hearing.....marked by adoration bordering on worship...for all things Israeli.
I don't want anything bad to happen to Israel or to Israelis....and absolutely, Israel has a right to defend itself.....but....that in no way excuses U.S. senators from jettisoning all comprehension of what's moral, or what's murder, in a humiliating and obvious attempt to sufficiently out-slobber all others over how much they love and defend Israel.
