Republicans are currently leaderless. Take a look around. Which GOP celebrity is now leading the the Grand Old Party?
Give up yet? Since the election, the two guys acting as spokesmen-leaders for the GOP are two angry old white guys, Senator John McCain (AZ) and Senator Lindsey Graham (SC). The Three Old Amigos minus Joementum Lieberman.
Since the election, what have the two-angry-old-white-guys-minus-Joementum been up to? First and foremost, attacking a woman of color who just happens to work for our nation's first black president.
"I am dead-set on making sure that we don't promote anybody who was an essential player in the Benghazi debacle," Graham said. McCain was even more bombastic during an appearance on Fox News. "I will do everything in my power to block her from being the United States secretary of State," he said.
The two Amigos put on their stern faces, stood in front of teevee cameras, and very matter-of-factly ripped UN Ambassador Susan Rice up one side and down the other over.....over what?.....over "being an essential player in the Benghazi debacle." Wait, what?
Susan Rice went on the Sunday shows six days after the Benghazi violence using the CIA's prepared talking points concerning Benghazi. That's what she did. And for that, the two stand-ins for GOP leaders, McCain and Graham, declared open season on Ms. Rice. Two old, angry white guys....without facts or evidence on their side.....purposely accused Ms. Rice, a person of color, of conspiring and lying about the nature of the Benghazi event....for being an "essential player."
After Petraeus and others cleared up the question of who compiled the talking points Ms. Rice spoke from on those Sunday shows....the two angry white Amigos backed off a bit....but those angry, angry faces remained. Point being that when it comes to alleged-to-be serious issues, McCain and Graham seem to be leading the Republican Party.
Again yesterday, the two angry, old GOP leaders were on the Sunday shows.....leading their Party....
“I would be very much opposed to raising tax rates, but I do believe we can close a lot of loopholes,” McCain said on “Fox News Sunday.” He said that could be achieved by imposing “a limit on the amount of deduction on charitable giving, a limit on the amount you can take on your home loan mortgage deduction.”
Graham, who has previously spoken out against Norquist’s pledge, reiterated his position on ABC’s “This Week,” arguing that he will support higher taxes if Democrats agree to meaningful entitlement cuts.
You see, Mitt Romney....the loser in the election....wanted to lower tax rates and pay for the loss of revenue by doing what?.....closing loopholes in the tax code. Something that the CBO said couldn't actually work unless tax deductions were eliminated for the middle class. Now, John McCain, playing the part of Party Leader.....picks up the debunked Romney talking point and makes it his own.
Not to be outdone by his Angry Amigo Buddy, Lindsey Graham grabs a hostage, or two, and says that the only way he will support modestly limiting tax deductions for our nation's uber-rich is if Democrats will lay Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid on the altar of the Supply-Side God. Again, the losing candidate in the presidential election had proposed voucherizing and/or privatizing and/or Ryan-izing SS and the Medi's.....raising the retirement age, limiting benefits....or a combination of all of the above.
Which returns me to where I began. It is clear.....or should be....that the angry old white GOP senators, Graham and McCain, are filling the vacuum in the GOP left after Romney was soundly defeated. What kind of job are the two Amigos doing playing as if they are leading a leaderless political party? Bang-up.
Not only are these two old guys continuing the utterly detestable practice of politicizing the deaths of 4 Americans in Libya......a second-debate feature from the clueless "Obama-didn't-call-it-an-act-of-terror" Mitt Romney......but the two Amigos are also following in the footsteps of the GOP loser by arguing that tens of millions of non-rich Americans should sacrifice SS, Medicare and Medicaid benefits in return for a couple of tax loophole closings which $400 an hour attorney/lobbyists will reopen before the ink is dry on the "Grand Bargain."
Voters rejected the vile Republican politicization of 4 American deaths in Benghazi. Voters rejected the spare-the-wealthy tax proposals of the multi-millionaire GOP candidate. Yet the new old, angry white leaders of the GOP are pretending that voters did no such thing.
Following Mitt Romney's loss, Lindsey Graham and John McCain are standing in as leaders of a leaderless party. White, male, and angry......check. Foolishly continuing to politicize the deaths of 4 Americans in Benghazi....check. Denouncing the slightest of tax rate increases on the filthiest of rich....check. Anxious to cut those "bankrupt" entitlements which have been a godsend to tens of millions of Americans over multiple decades.....check.
The GOP judiciously earning the slogan "we are out of touch with average Americans, and we really don't care how you vote, cause we ain't changing squat, ever".......check.
