Are Republicans Evolving On Evolution?

By The Reverend Published: December 31, 2013

In 2009, 54 percent of Republicans and 64 percent of Democrats said humans have evolved over time, a difference of 10 percentage points. Today, 43 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of Democrats say humans have evolved, a 24-point gap.

Roughly two-thirds of Democrats (67%) and independents (65%) say that humans have evolved over time, compared with less than half of Republicans (43%).

GOP'ers Have A Sad Over NYT Benghazi Report

By The Reverend Published: December 30, 2013

Members of Darrell Issa's fan club are most likely not pleased with this weekend's NY Times extensive investigative report on Benghazi. That's the thing about facts and evidence....they often expose ignorant conspiracy theory vendettas for the ignorant conspiracy theory vendettas that they are. It's the darnest thing.

The NY Times report by David Kirkpatrick includes detailed accounts which lead to these important conclusions....

Pope's Messaging Provokes Republican Push Back

By The Reverend Published: December 27, 2013

Pope Francis has been making members of the Republican Party in the United States a little worried. You see, Francis has been saying a bunch of stuff in criticism of trickle down, supply-side economics.....the idolatry of money.....income and wealth inequality......and outrageous CEO salaries and bonuses.

These criticisms of basic Republican economics....come on the heels of the new Pope's advice to the Catholic Church not to make cultural issues like gay marriage and abortion the central theme of the church.

Let's Ask Tom

By The Reverend Published: December 26, 2013

Because I work extremely hard to maintain, you know, on the blog....I have waited until after Christmas to mention anything about how people like The Reverend have been under attack this Christmas season.

Contrary to have feelings too. But because atheists understand that the world doesn't revolve around them, unlike some grifter book sellers with very low IQ's and no capacity for self-awareness, I have purposely waited until after the Christmas holiday to bring my grievance before the blogospheric community.

The Reverend's 'News Story of the Year'

By The Reverend Published: December 23, 2013

This is the time of year when media members write articles setting forth their ideas of what has been the best and worse (stories, people, lies, winners, losers, etc) of the last 12 months. Consider the following my 'worst story about us' for 2013.

As of December 10th, 194 children ages 12 and under had been killed by gunshots in 43 states.....

Is Chris Christie Really That Petty?

By The Reverend Published: December 21, 2013

That's the question American voters must confront and deal with in the wake of a scandal which seems like a parody of a Sopranos payback episode. Spoiler alert: the answer to the question is....yes, Christie really is that petty.

I have little doubt that the New Jersey governor will be able to claim plausible deniability over the four day traffic gridlock created in Ft. Lee, New Jersey last September when, with still no explanation forthcoming, the George Washington bridge was closed down to one lane. The bridge is the busiest in the entire country. The first day it was closed to one lane just happened to be the first day students returned to school.

Talking Duck

By The Reverend Published: December 20, 2013

How is it that certain stories catch fire and spread rapidly while others of more significance and import usually don't? Heck if I know....but it's happened again in these past few days.

Everybody is talking about the Ducks. I have no idea who the Ducks are or what Dynasty they may have going. Frankly, I don't give a hoot....or a honk....or a quack. Some guy by the name of Phil Robertson was suspended from the A&E program because of some stuff he said in an interview with GQ. The stuff Robertson said included casting male homosexual behavior in, lets' say, a negative light.....the expected backlash came quickly.....A&E suspended Robertson from the show.

God.....The Card Dealer

By The Reverend Published: December 19, 2013

“This kid was dealt a bad hand. I don’t know quite why. That’s just the way God works. Sometimes some of us are lucky and some of us are not,” he said.

That is soon-to-be-former Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, commenting on an 11 year old homeless girl named Dasani whose story was featured in a 5 part series in the NY Times.

Hoovering Away Our Future

By The Reverend Published: December 18, 2013

By now you've heard that Junior Bush-appointed federal judge Richard Leon has ruled that the NSA's hoovering program is most likely unconstitutional. "Almost Orwellian", the judge said.

The GOP 2014 Midterm Strategy

By The Reverend Published: December 17, 2013

In November, RNC Chair Reince Priebus confidently announced that Republicans would run against Obamacare in the 2014 midterm campaigns.

"We will tattoo it to their forehead in 2014. We will run on it. And they will lose because of it."

What The Frack?

By The Reverend Published: December 15, 2013

It is virtually impossible to listen to a conservative media program these days without hearing a celebration of Sarah Palin's sound bite...."drill, baby, drill." Whether it is fracking in Ohio or Pennsylvania.....or North Dakota's "oil boom", conservative media seem almost obsessed with talking about new energy production inside the U.S.

There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that new drilling and fracking pisses off environmentalists who normally vote Democratic. If environmentalists are against something, conservatives are usually for it. Another is that conservatives have talked themselves into believing that "drill, baby, drill" is a winning economic strategy. Alongside cutting tax rates on very rich Americans and deregulating the industries that those very rich Americans own, the third constant in any conservative screed is drilling our way to robust employment and economic growth.

Always Moving To The Right

By The Reverend Published: December 12, 2013

The new budget agreement announced yesterday by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) was immediately denounced by right wingers. What is important to note here is that the tentative budget agreement accomplishes almost every Republican objective. From Bloomberg....

The bipartisan plan would set U.S. spending at about $1.01 trillion for this fiscal year, higher than the $967 billion required in a 2011 budget plan. The agreement sets spending for defense at $520.5 billion and for non-defense at $491.8 billion.

The Handshake Highway To Hell?

By The Reverend Published: December 11, 2013

Should we expect new oversight hearings led by Darrell Boom-Boom Issa to determine what new nefarious plot against freedom President Obama was launching when he spontaneously shared a handshake with Cuban leader, Raul Castro, aka Satan? Handshake-Gate. Has a nice ring, no?

Grandpa McGruffie McCain.... "Why should you shake hands with somebody who's keeping Americans in prison? I mean, what's the point?" "Neville Chamberlain shook hands with Hitler," he said....

Renacci Visits Suffield

By The Reverend Published: December 10, 2013

Yesterday, U.S. Representative Jim Renacci (R-OH) paid a visit to a few townships in southern Portage County. The Reverend was in attendance at one of these hour-long sessions and took part in the Q&A portion which followed short remarks from the congressman.

Renacci made three stops yesterday, but his message at all three stops was apparently the same: Obama and Reid are the real problems with congressional dysfunction, ZOMG the debt, a heavy dose of trickle down economics, Social Security, Medicare and the like should all be cut personal favorite......what voters should do to make Congress work again.

Big Government Republicans

By The Reverend Published: December 9, 2013

Typing the words "big government" into the Google search bar produces nearly 2 billion hits. 2 billion. The phrase "big government" is thrown around so often by conservative and Republican officials to describe the Obama presidency and Democrats in general....that you may actually believe Republicans favor smaller government and Democrats favor bigger government.

But talk and words are cheap. And with politicians it would seem that talk and words are always on sale. However, to investigate whether Republicans are accurate in labeling Democrats the party of "big government"......we must steer away from talk and look at actions.

Conservatives Respond To Mandela's Death

By The Reverend Published: December 7, 2013

What has been of keen interest to me in the wake of the death of Nelson Mandela is the reaction of American conservatives. There is no disputing the fact that U.S. conservatives, including Ronaldus Maximus, opposed ending South Africa's apartheid regime. To guys like Jesse Helms, Jerry Falwell, Dick Cheney and Ronald Reagan....Mandela was a communist and a terrorist. The End.

The idea that majority blacks in South Africa had no democratic right to vote and should be kept under the thumb of minority-white leaders appealed to many American conservatives during South Africa's apartheid regime.

Why The GOP REALLY Opposes Obamacare

By The Reverend Published: December 6, 2013

A few bloggers have been writing recently about the bizarreness of Republican opposition to Obamacare. GOP opposition to the ACA has not been like any opposition to ANY bill I can ever remember. When one factors in the truth of the ACA......the law will insure millions more people who need health insurance, millions who currently do not have health insurance.....the GOP's loud and constant opposition these past four years just seems....crazy.

The reaction by Republicans to the ACA has always seemed surreal. After all, the template for the ACA was Romneycare, a Massachusetts state initiative which set up exchanges in much the same way that the ACA works. The for-profit insurance exchanges idea was originally the conservative Heritage Foundation's idea. Four straight years of GOP full-metal-jacket opposition to the ACA.....seen in the light of those facts.....has always seemed unexplainably nuts.

Hobby-Horse Lobbying

By The Reverend Published: December 5, 2013

Today, the Beacon reprinted an opinion piece by Fort Worth Star Telegram's editorial director Mike Norman entitled: "Hobby Lobby's compelling biblical principles". No, really, that's the title.

You see, the owners of Hobby Lobby, a for-profit, run-of-the-mill retailer, object to Obamacare on religious grounds because the company's owners believe that taking the morning after pill causes an abortion. It doesn't. See here and here.

One Nation, Divisible?

By The Reverend Published: December 4, 2013

Last month Illinois became the 16th state to legalize gay marriage equality.

Presently, 25 states have rejected the Medicaid expansion provision offered in the ACA.

20 states plus D.C. now have medical marijuana laws in place, two states have legalized the weed.

Despite numerous studies demonstrating that in-person voter fraud is as prevalent as unicorn sightings, 34 states now have voter ID laws which actually suppress and discourage voting.

Fearmongering Back In Vogue

By The Reverend Published: December 2, 2013

During the Bush years scaring Americans was all the rage. Everybody was doing it. Those who didn't do it were not sufficiently patriotic. Color coded threat levels changed like traffic lights to keep Americans focused on....well...being afraid. Sufficiently scaring Americans helped in the passage of the Orwellian named Patriot Act which "legalized" the repeal of the 4th amendment.
